I've spent a lot of time playing Diablo 2, but I can't recall ever writing about it. There's a saying that you should write what you know. I know D2 and I'm practicing writing. I'm going on a Diablo 2 adventure, and I'll try to make it into something entertaining. Of course everything is better with pictures, so one of my goals is to capture some interesting moments. I'll be editing in more chapters as my quest for awesomeness continues.

It appears I've found the upper limit of how many pictures will display in a single post, so here's a link to the chapters after 12:
http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=242797&currentpage=4#65

Chapter 1: The Plan
+ Show Spoiler +

I'm playing a melee sorceress. On ladder hardcore, only using items I've found myself. On USEast just in case I get the urge to play with someone else. I'm going to make an invincible sorceress. Once I'm set up, I'll be able to go afk in front of hell Lister (if he isn't mana burn lol). I will accomplish this by having an absurdly high defense rating with shiver armor and a defiance mercenary, by using Energy Shield with a max Telekinesis, and by wearing items with +Damage Reduction. I will also make use of the standard methods: max block, high resistances, and faster hit recovery.

Stat points:
lots of str to wear melee armor
even more dex for max block and AR
max vit so i don't die
0 energy because energy is for squares.

Necessary skill points:
20 Shiver Armor
20 Telekinesis
1 Static Field
1 Energy Shield
1 Fire/Cold/Lightning Mastery
1 to prerequisites and other shit i forgot

I'll decide where to put the remaining points when I get to a high enough level, I'll probably max Warmth and Lightning Mastery.

Chapter 2: Starting My Adventure
+ Show Spoiler +

After creating my character, using the highly original name GhinSorc, I set off down the road to the Blood Moor.
beware foul demons and beasts, it is i, small asian girl with stick

I quickly set out to my task of murdering the aboriginal people and bludgeoning quill rats to reach level 2.
the soulless eyes of a killer

I followed the road to the Den of Evil, where my first quest of murder would be completed.
notice the aboriginal's crude form of cave art. simply fascinating

Armed with my camera and trusty stick, I descended into the Den of Evil. I was greeted by more of the sub-human population of the area and their local shamans. I even dispatched a yeti, although the surprise of the incident caused me to drop my camera.

action photography!

I dispatched Corpsefire and the final zombies with my gore-covered staff, and set about the task of looting the bodies.
hooray shinies!

I took a quick trip to town to identify my shiny new gloves and shield and to sell the various garbage I had collected on my expedition of murder. My lovely new shield of +10 strength was incredibly helpful, especially for a melee sorceress whose stat points are hard to spend. I sold my blood-soaked staff and upgraded to a Scepter of Shock (1-8 lightning damage!) that I purchased from the store. Newly armed and armored, my next task was to kill Blood Raven and hire a mercenary to kill things faster.

Flavie allowed me to pass and enter the Cold Plains.

A few steps from the waypoint, I was accosted by more of the aboriginals, who no doubt had heard of my previous deeds and sent their champions to fight me.

It didn't go well for them.
hold still and let me shoot you

I tracked the lone survivor back to a large aboriginal camp, where I encountered their leader.
rrrawrrrrghhhh none will survive

I walked around... killed stuff... blah blah blah...

Chapter 3: Blood Raven
+ Show Spoiler +

Danger was all around. The moans and screams of the undead echoed in my footsteps. I was trapped in a graveyard with the dead closing in.
you can almost hear their horrid voices... braaaaaaaaains...

I tiptoed through a hole in the cemetery gate, sneaking past a skeletal sentry
[image loading]
nah im lying, i smashed his face in after i took the picture

...and walked right into a mob of zombies. Fortunately I'm also a part-time exorcist.

A heroic battle ensued, many potions were drank, and I emerged victorious.
my "reward"

I returned to town to pick up my mercenary, the lovely Paige, and also buy new items for both of us. Only at level 2, Paige is already killing things with a speed and range I can't hope to match.

mmm yeah, look at those beautiful stats

fashionable and practical

Chapter 4: The Path to Tristram
+ Show Spoiler +

Once again I set out from town. This time my destination was the ruined town of Tristram. My goal was to rescue Cain so he would identify my items for free and give me a magic ring. As I walked across the Cold Plains, I noticed the foreboding entrance to The Cave. Yes, really, that's what its actually called. Little was I to know that this cave would bring me close to a brush with death.

Exploring a cave full of bloodthirsty monsters? What could possibly go wrong? I entered the cave, turned a corner, and was greeted by a hail of arrows. Naturally I took cover, but unfortunately Paige wasn't so lucky. Fortunately for me, the demon archers decided to round the corner one at a time so I could smash their brains in with my mace.

PAIGE! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo

Thankfully Paige was able to be revived, and after clearing the cave of all life and looting its uninteresting treasures, we resumed our journey. On my way, I liberated a house from its tyrannical landowners.

looks like a zergling got er lester

I encountered a terrifying creature. Throughout the ages, this monster has gone by many names. The scourge of the stony field. The keeper of the cairn stones. His name brings terror to the hearts of little hardcore nubbins.

Rakanishu.

My battle with Rakanishu was actually quite anticlimactic. I saw the stones on the minimap and before I could get the camera ready, Paige dispatched the entire group by herself. I didn't get a shot of his feared lightning sparks. I was so shocked (har har) that I even forgot to take down the minimap. I walked away disappointed.

hooray garbage!

After an uneventful jog through the Underground Passage, I emerged in the Dark Wood. The new Vile Lancer enemies are usually something of a trouble when there's a boss pack, but my Frozen Armor protected me from their pointy sticks(level 3 with buffing staff! ha!).

The guardian of the next piece of my quest is another infamous slayer of hardcore nubs. Not quite as renowned as Rakanishu, but he has his fair share of newbie kills. His name is Treehead Woodfist. Fearing this would be another fight too quick to screenshot, I was prepared before I went into combat. My preparation was rewarded with a nice shot of him falling down as I broke his face with my kung fu.

hahaha your kung fu is weak. i am the supreme master of the fist.

With Treehead's magic scroll in my prossession, + Show Spoiler +

DRAMATIZATION. DO NOT ATTEMPT

My trip to Tristram started off relaxing. I enjoyed the sights of burning corpses and exploding cows. I encountered one of the natives, who greeted me with a hug.

I encountered more of the local aboriginal people and they welcomed me by showing me their handcrafted knives and by giving me a taste of their local drinks. Naturally I repaid them by showing them my mace.

dramatic battle! click to fullscreen!

I found Cain resting in a hammock, and we returned to town together. He was so thankful for the ride that he gave me this ring.

gee, thanks cain. i'll treasure it forever...

Now that I was level 9, I decided to go on a shopping spree to pick up some of the newly available armor, which offers more defense because it's made out of metal instead of paper. Gheed's store showed off some of the latest fashions and I made some good purchases.

i hear all the kids are wearing them these days

With my shiny new metal armor, I set off down the road to the next area of my quest, the ruined tower of the countess.

Chapter 5: The Countess and the Hammer
+ Show Spoiler +
I battled my way through the Black Marsh, looking for the entrance to the tower where the Countess made her lair. It started to get dark, so I decided to start a fire and camp out for the night. There was no wood to be found, so I used a treasure chest for fuel.

When daylight broke, I set out again with the beautiful Paige to find the ruined tower. For something so big, it was suprisingly hard to find.

yeah thats right bitches. level 5 frozen armor.

The black tower can be a difficult area if you aren't prepared. The goatmen and ghosts are fast, and they tend to congregate near staircases. A large group can quickly overwhelm someone who isn't equipped properly. I personally have witnessed many people in public games(read: nublets) slain by the Blood Clan's goatmen. Being equipped with my new armor (made of metal!), I was ready to deal with anything the tower cellars could throw at me.

heroically letting paige deal with a flock of ghosts

In the tower, I reached the milestone of level 12. Level 12 lets me use Shiver Armor. It's hard to explain why Shiver Armor is so awesome. On paper it looks useless at best. Shiver Armor's damage seems laughable compared to "real" spells like Blizzard. Defense rating is a stat that gets overlooked by the D2 community, and to most people the boost in defense rating is completely pointless. Most sorceresses get 1 point for the chill when attacked component, if they get it at all.

For a melee sorceress, Shiver Armor is amazing.

There's something wonderful about watching enemies kill themselves. As I made my way through the tower basements, I tried to capture some of the joys of Shiver Armor.
you're already dead

With my newly acquired powers, I snapped the Countess's neck and took her ladder points. Her minions were even nice enough to give me a new weapon, the Bloooooood Crescent.
shiver action!

It's a long walk from the Black Marsh to the monastery. There were some sights along the way, and also lots of murder.
that's odd, i didn't know your mom was in diablo 2

Eventually I made it to the Monastery Gate. I cleaned the blood off my fashionable tangerine chain boots with arms tired from manually smashing skulls, and slowly stepped inside.
it also doesn't hurt to cast shiver armor again

Inside the gate was a maze. Quill rats and vicious yetis (not pictured) made their homes here. I politely entered their home and greeted them with a handwoven basket full of murder. Making my way through the monastery, I watched the lovely Paige slaughter everything in sight with her bow, while I followed behind her trying to make a sandwich. I don't know if you've ever tried to make a sandwich while carrying a sword and shield before, but it isn't as easy as it sounds. Paige found the Smith and shot him full of holes while I sat down and finished my sandwich. Killing makes me hungry.

making weapons from your bones

We returned the hammer to Charsi and I tried to gamble a useful pair of gloves (somewhat successfully) and a belt (unsuccessfully). Taking the waypoint back, I pressed on through the monastery. The end of Act 1 was almost in sight.

Chapter 6: The Jail and Andariel
+ Show Spoiler +
If I had to choose a least favorite area in Act 1, it would be the jail section. Why do I dislike the jail, you ask? There are too many fucking doors. There are fences and doors and shit everywhere and it's annoying to find a straight line through. The enemies are mostly ranged or annoying, or both.

Most people skip the jail section and get the catacombs waypoint from a friend. Most people aren't aware that there is a fearsome monster lurking on The Jail Level 2. He is the most dangerous thing in Act 1. His name is Pitspawn Fouldog. He is always Cold Enchanted and Cursed. I can remember getting my face blown off by him several times.

Why is he so dangerous? The Tainted class monsters attack by firing an orb of lightning which, in addition to lightning damage, also strikes with their melee attack on contact. The Cold Enchanted attribute adds +75% to +100% cold damage to the monster's attack. The Cursed attribute casts Amplify damage on attack, which adds +100% physical damage. The curse multiplies the melee damage, which multiplies the cold damage... Basically it hurts... a lot.

yessirree that there's a good picture

I came upon Pitspawn Fouldog through a door at the end of a mostly empty side-path. His minions spotted me and fired their death orbs. I took cover behind a stack of blood-stained boxes. I knew Paige wouldn't last long against them alone, so I had to think of something fast. The jail bars stood between me and the demons, preventing me from engaging them, but also keeping them from moving closer. Knowing I had to do something, I heroically ran out to draw their fire and give Paige time to blast them back to hell. My strategy worked and Pitspawn Fouldog was defeated.

Fortunately for me, the Jail is a small area and soon I came out of it into the Inner Cloister. Through a set of french doors steps away is The Cathedral, another dangerous area. Monsters spawn close together here in a small area. There can be packs of ghosts and tainteds waiting to ambush you as you open the door. Usually it's not too bad and this time I had it easy. A group of ghosts and a group of fallen who were far from the door and far from the skeletal custodian of the cathedral. Bone Ash, the formal name of the previously mentioned cathedral custodian, is always Extra Strong, Cold Enchanted, and Magic Resistant. This means when he dies, there is a mean frost nova that's been known to kill people. This time he wasn't much trouble.

Paige is such a good shot that she can kill a skeleton mage with a bow. Think about that for a minute.

The catacombs were dark and the smell of murder was in the air. I took a small break and made a snack.

mmm looks good, is that chinese food?

Eventually I found my way to the bottom of the catacombs to Andariel's lair. There was a small antechamber that opened into a larger room full of blood and gore. It looked like no one had cleaned for a long time. I could see a hole in the floor where the pipes had burst and blood of the innocent was bubbling up.

yep, looks like yer blood pipes burst. we're gonna have to git earl to bring the truck around

Naturally I killed everyone in the room. A large door and a few empty feet of stone stood between me and Andariel. Before I faced her, I had to return to town and prepare. I bought 4 antidote potions and rearranged my belt and inventory so that I would be ready. I checked to make sure my fly was zipped and then took the portal down to the bottom of the catacombs. I drank an antidote potion and made Paige drink hers, and then we kicked down the door and started beating some demon ass.

for a giant demon woman, she has a surprisingly fit bottom. not my taste, but still.

There are some characters that have a hard time with bosses. Necromancers come to mind.

Sorceresses do not have a difficult time with bosses. Why? They have a spell called Static Field. I ran up to Andariel and spammed static field until I couldn't. Then I drank a mana potion and a rejuvenation potion and spammed it some more. When I ran out of mana, Andariel had a sliver of her life bar remaining. I took out my sword and slapped the life out of her.

With Andariel's death, Act 1 was clear and I was free to identify the miscellaneous garbage she dropped (an emerald for fuck's sake) and move on to Act 2. I said goodbye to Paige, after stripping her naked, and hired a new mercenary named Ilzan. Ilzan will be my mercenary companion through the rest of the game. I armed him with a garbage socketed trident and bought him a full helm and some cheap chainmail.

fara, caught sneezing on camera

If you were curious, here's a list of the garbage I'm currently wearing:
Helmet: Gemmed Skull Cap (8 Defense, +20 Life)
Weapon: Blood Crescent
Shield: Cleglaw's Claw (27 Defense, Poison Length Reduced by 75%)
Armor: Studded Leather of the Fox (33 Defense, +10 Life)
Gloves: Sturdy Chain Gloves of Remedy (11 Defense, Poison Length Reduced by 25%)
Belt: Sturdy Belt of Remedy (7 Defense, Poison Length Reduced by 25%)
Boots: Rare Chain Boots (12 Defense, 10% Faster Hit Recovery, +1 Dex, Lightning Resist 7%, Poison Length Reduced by 25%)
Ring1: Beryl Ring of Dexterity (+2 Dex, Poison Resist 9%)
Ring2: Beryl Ring of Warding (Poison Resist 10%, Magic Damage Reduced by 1) yeah its the one from cain
Amulet: Amulet of Regeneration (Replenish Life +2)

Chapter 7: Radament and the Stony Tomb
+ Show Spoiler +
I had made it through Act 1 relatively unharmed, but Act 2 is of a higher difficulty. I needed some better gear to deal with the new sources of damage. I had poison damage well covered, but I knew the skeleton archers in the sewers would tear me apart. My solution was to buy a bone shield from Drognan and imbue it. The result wasn't amazing, but it would do the trick. I could worry about lightning damage when I got out of the sewers alive.

hey, it's better than cleglaw's

With my new shield, I opened the door to the sewers. Immediately I was shot at by a large group of skeleton archers. Clank clank clank OUCH clank. I had survived the volley. Ilzan beat them down with his spear while I tickled them with my scimitar. After that I found the stairs down and the threat of archers was gone. The rest of the monsters were melee and easily destroyed by my Shiver Armor and Ilzan.
double action shiver armor!

While exploring the sewer and mercilessly slaughtering its inhabitants, I found my first rune!
FUCK YALL I'M RICH NOW

On the third floor I found a group of Extra Strong melee cats. They were no match for the terrible power of my Shiver Armor.
if you squint you can make out Ilzan's corpse

Stuff died, shinies dropped. I saw an icebolt and knew Radament was near. Something interesting I learned: Shiver Armor gets rid of skeletons really fast. I was also helping remove them from the game with Ice Blast.

Eventually I made my way across the shattered ice fragments to Radament. As a part-time exorcist, it was my job to remove this monster from the world. I cast static a few times, Ilzan struck Radament with his spear, and Radament shattered into a million pieces.

Free skill point hooray! I went to town and bought some ocher gloves for the journey through the desert. I felt I had a decent enough lightning resistance and life pool. It wouldn't be enough to go swimming in a thunderstorm, but it was enough to take a few beetle bolts on the chin. In the desert, I encountered my first random mana burn boss!

i dodged that spear with my ninja reflexes if you were wondering

I didn't run into any trouble, but I did run into my first real amulet.
what has two thumbs and a new amulet? this guy

I also ran into the Stony Tomb. It isn't particularly dangerous, but I needed experience and more chances at usable loot. There were monsters, the monsters died. You've played d2, you know how it goes.
so it goes

The big boss of the Stony Tomb is this wussface. I decided that Ilzan needed some exercise, so I let him do the work.
you keep fighting, i'll uhh stand over here... and guard this wall...

It wouldn't be much of a tomb without treasure, right? What could be inside? My magic powers tell me gold and potions.

Thoroughly disappointed by the quality of the the treasure, I made my way deeper into the desert. I knew what was ahead. The most annoying creatures in all of video game history.

Chapter 8: Fun with Cubes
+ Show Spoiler +
There have always been annoying enemies in video games. Birds, medusa heads, Science Vessels, the list goes on. Diablo 2 has an enemy on this list: leapers. Why are leapers annoying? They're fast and hard to hit because they're leaping around. When you strike a leaper, they tumble backwards. Leapers don't do much damage, so they're not a threat, only annoying. My sword doesn't do enough damage, so I let Ilzan deal with them

knock knock, whose there? fuck off leapers

My quest today isn't murder, although I'm sure there will be plenty of it. Today I'll be finding the Horadric Cube at the bottom of the Halls of the Dead. The Halls of the Dead are named as such for two reasons. The first reason is because there are lots of zombies and mummies wandering around. The second reason is that I'll be making everything inside dead.
shiver armor tells skeletons to fuck off

The Halls of the Dead are easy and I can't remember ever seeing anyone die here. There's a fighter cat boss guarding the cube, but fighter cats are so weak in general that it's never a problem.
i'm casting magic urn if you were wondering

Now that I have a cube, I can upgrade my rubies and buy a new breastplate. Later on, I can craft items that will turn out to be garbage 90% of the time. For now, it's time to go shopping. I bought a new weapon, a 3 socket flail that i dumped some chipped gems into. I also gambled a new belt, shown here.

bob marley would be proud mon

The next part of my quest would take me to the Maggot Lair, a favorite spot of all D2 players. As a melee sorceress, I don't particularly mind going there. The narrow hallways mean that only a single enemy can attack me at a time. Also, I have teleport.

lots of bugs were harmed in the making of this picture

The narrow passageways and Ilzan helped to shield me from the lightning. With my new flail I found I could actually harm monsters. The maggot lair went quickly and I obtained the first staff piece.

The next staff piece wouldn't be so easy...

Chapter 9: Duriel's Lair
+ Show Spoiler +
Armed with my awesome flail, I set off to the Lost City to find the Viper Amulet. I entered the city and was greeted by a wave of fireballs and zombies. As you might be aware, zombies do not fare well against Shiver Armor. I killed them all and found some shiny boots for my trouble.

woohoo... i guess

I'm not exactly sure how they dropped. I also don't like using my boot slot for something other than Faster Hit Recovery and Fire/Lightning Resist. However, my previous boots were trash, so I won't complain too loudly. The stats will help me out.

After killing a small army of bugs and zombies, I finally found the Viper Temple and made my way inside. I can't say I agree with their choice of decor.

I'll be sure to pick one of these up next time I'm at bed bath and beyond

The Viper Temple is the most dangerous place in Act 2 Normal. Vipers use a nasty charge attack that has a knockback in addition to hurting a lot. If you're unlucky or unprepared, a group of vipers can chain charge attacks and kill you. Once again Shiver Armor proved useful and helped me deflect some of the incoming damage.

kaaaliiiiiimaaaaaaaa

The worst part of the Viper Temple is the second floor. A monster called Fangskin lives here, a viper boss who always has Lightning Enchanted and Extra Fast attributes. This is not a good combination for my personal safety. Fangskin and his minion's charge attack does an absurd amount of damage thanks to Lightning Enchanted, and thanks to Extra Fast, the whole group can repeatedly smash the life out of you in seconds.

How did I deal with this? I teleported onto the center platform, stole the amulet, and let Ilzan kill them by himself. There was no way that I was going close to that monster with 33 Lightning Resist and only two rejuvenation potions.

The staff completed, my next task was a quest of murder. The Summoner needed to die, and I had just the blunt object to make it happen.

you may not pass

The palace cellar on the way to Arcane Sanctuary has my favorite monster in the game, the urdar. Why are they my favorite monster? I think the urdar artwork and sound is fantastic. It's not too clear from this picture, but they use a corpse wrapped in chains for a weapon. They have the Smite skill and increased health regeneration. From a necromancer's perspective, this is the best monster to revive.

The cellar is also the habitat of the dreaded skeleton archers, bane of my existence. I went through this area as fast as I could and took the portal to Arcane Sanctuary. I found a ral rune and socketed my armor with it, hoping to reduce some of the upcoming fire damage. What actually hit me the hardest was the lightning tower.

fuck off lightning tower

The Arcane Sanctuary is divided into four wings, with The Summoner residing at the end of a random wing. Of course it would be my luck to find him at the end of the fourth and final path I chose. When I heard his mocking laughter, I went to town and bought Thawing potions for myself and Ilzan.

click for fullscreen action!

I've seen The Summoner kill many a noob with his elemental attacks. I was determined to not be one of them. I teleported on top of him and necksnapped the pizza-faced geek asaply. This done, I claimed my handful of gold coins as reward and read the book that warped me closer to Duriel's lair.

The symbol for Tal Rasha's Tomb was a circle. I've played this game way too much, and therefore I know where all of the symbols are. The circle symboled tomb happens to be at the bottom left side of the canyon.

Tal Rasha's Tomb can be difficult depending on the types of monsters that spawn, on higher difficulty especially. I got an easy group with no mummies and no ghosts. Even easier, I could see the staff room from the entrance. It wasn't long before I found myself in front of Duriel's door.

gulp

To prepare, I went to town and made sure all of my gear was properly equipped. I took the rejuvenation potions from my stash and filled two belt rows with them. That done, I bought a handful of health potions and set them in easy reach at the top of my bag. I was as ready as I would ever be.

I held my breath and entered Duriel's lair. He waved a claw at me in greeting and charged. My life bar dropped a third from this single attack. As I brought up the first static field, Duriel's chilling aura snapped onto me and Ilzan. While he was occupied with Ilzan, it didn't take me long to static off the majority of his life. As I switched to my physical attack, Duriel took notice of me and leveled another charge. As I recovered, he charged again, bringing my health dangerously low. I fatfingered my potion bar as I brought my flail down on Duriel for what would be the last time. An earthquake shook the chamber and I squinted to see my reward.

hooray me!

Unfortunately (fortunately?) the Hawkmail turned out to be ethereal. Because of this and because my cold resistance was a whopping 0, I decided it would be best to give it to Ilzan.

Now that I'm in Act 3, here's what I'm currently wearing:
Helmet: Gemmed Skull Cap (8 Defense, +20 Life) still using it lol
Weapon: Gemmed Flail (2-28 Lightning Damage, -25% Target Defense) that's two flawed topaz and an eth rune if you were wondering
Shield: Rare Bone Shield (too lazy to type its stats, it's the same one from the picture)
Armor: Gemmed Breastplate (67 Defense, +34 Life, Fire Resist +30%) 2 flawed rubies and a ral rune
Gloves: Ocher Heavy Gloves of Remedy (5 Defense, Lightning Resist +20%, Poison Length Reduced by 25%)
Belt: Rare Belt (the one from the picture)
Boots: Sander's Riprap
Ring1: Beryl Ring of Dexterity (+2 Dexterity, Poison Resist +9%)
Ring2: Iron Ring of Thawing (+31 Attack Rating, Half Freeze Duration)
Ammy: Russet Amulet (Fire Resist +15%)

Here's what Ilzan is wearing and his character screen:
Helmet: Rare Bone Helm (+3 Mana, Lightning Resist +9%, Fire Resist +19%)
Weapon: Beryl Poleaxe (Poison Resist +8%)
Armor: Ethereal Hawkmail (170 Defense)

Chapter 10: The Flayer Jungle
+ Show Spoiler +
Unlike most people, I actually enjoy Act 3. Why do I like Act 3? It's mostly in a straight line and I like hearing the flayers squeal when I kill them. It's also fun when you come back to Act 3 in Nightmare with fullscreen death spells like Frozen Orb or Lightning Fury and watch the flayers die in groups.

It's fun for me this time because I have Shiver Armor to kill groups of flayers. Shiver Armor's damage is getting close to a level where it kills enemies outright.

look mom, no hands!

My jungle safari through the Spider Forest began uneventfully enough. After I made sure my Fire Resist was 75% to survive the flayer's firebreath, my first task was to try capturing some pictures of midgets killing themselves on my armor. This proved difficult because the only flayers I could find were blowgun flayers. To catch the crafty buggers, I decided to do some stretching and limber up.

I rounded a corner and was surprised to find myself in the Flayer Jungle. Rather than turn around and find the waypoint, I decided I could come back later and made my way forward and onward. It was then I encountered the scariest thing in all of Diablo.

nooooooooooooooope

Pretending I saw nothing, I continued on the path deeper into the jungle. It was there that I found an incredibly useful item.

FUCK YEAH

There's a dark shadow ahead. The biggest obstacle I will face is in the distance and I need to start preparing for it now or my journey will end there. It's not the High Council or Mephisto. It's not the sasquatch. It's Diablo, the Lord of Terror. I need to gather the proper gear now to fight through the Chaos Sanctuary and survive the battle against him. My fire and lightning resistance both need to be 75% before I have a chance. This ring is a HUGE step towards that. To be honest, this is probably the best item I could find right now. If I could find a 3 socket helm...

Back on the main quest, I followed the jungle trail to the flayer village where the Gibdinn was being held. I teleported into the midst of a large pack of flayers intending to take a picture, but sadly everything died before I was ready.

Shamefully I returned to town to see what trashy rare ring I'd get as a reward. To my surprise, I got a halfway useful ring.

beats a beryl ring any day of the week, that's for sure

With my shiny new rings on, I backtracked through the Spider Forest looking for random quest item #1, which I would need to proceed into Act 4. Naturally the item was guarded by hordes of giant bugs. What I failed to mention, and you may have noticed if you looked closely at the pictures, was that I went shopping for a new weapon. I purchased a 50ish fire damage wand with Ignore Target Defense, the sexiest attribute in the game for a melee sorc weapon. This is a wand that cuts through giant spiders like a hot knife through butter. I'll be buttering my toast with spider guts today.

sweet, delicious spider innards

The next stop was back through the waypoint at the Flayer Dungeon, where random quest item #2 was guarded by midgets and zombie midgets.

The Flayer Dungeon is the smaller, slightly less scary cousin to the scariest place in the game, whose name must never be spoken. Dolls will sometimes appear here. Everyone who plays hardcore knows why dolls are scary. The main reason is that they explode on death. The blast is enough to kill most people instantly. Dolls are extremely fast and often it seems as though they have the power to appear next to you. Thousands of MF sorcs have been killed because they accidentally let their mercenary pop a doll. I'm not too worried because I'm alone in the game and this is only Normal difficulty.

scaaaaaaaaaaaarrrryyyyyyy

Other notable residents of the Flayer Dungeon include giant tentacle monsters, poison dart traps, and fire-breathing flayer shamans. The Flayer Dungeon is also a Michelin star restaurant, so naturally I had to try the food.

the plating is simply marvelous; the flavor, out of this world

Finishing my excellent meal, I returned to my search for the mysterious quest item #2. I knew it was hidden somewhere on the third level. When I arrived I discovered that the entire floor was a grate-filled maze. If you remember the jail section, you may recall that I don't particularly care for grates. This time was different; I had teleport. I zipped around until i stumbled upon the treasure chest and its pathetic guardian. Fire breath tickles when your fire resistance is 75%.

Ilzan heroically deflects the fire with his face
By the time I ran over to help Ilzan, the witch doctor was dead. I portal'd to town with the second quest item and checked the stores for gear that might help on the road to Kurast.

Chapter 11: The Road to Kurast
+ Show Spoiler +
My journey through the jungle ended in the city of Kurast. The last item I needed to unlock the door to Mephisto's lair was here, hidden in the sewers. The entrance to the city was guarded by a giant tree monster.

I'm not particularly fond of getting smacked in the face by a frenzied lightning-enchanted tree monster, so I made liberal use of Ice Blast to reset their Frenzy timers.

melee combat vs LE! fun!

All of the enemies in the greater Kurast area happen to be melee and they were nice enough to throw themselves on my Shiver Armor.

I think the best way to make clear how easy this all was would be with pictures.

before shiver armor

aaaaaaand after

This whole area was very easy for me and it went quickly. Minus the dead bodies, it was almost like being on vacation. I browsed the market.

i wonder what those are supposed to be

I knew that eventually I had to get back to my quest. This meant going into the sewers to retrieve the final cursed body part. There were more dolls in the sewer, and mummies as well to make things worse. Mummies can raise the dolls and their unholy bolts take big chunks out of my life bar. Teleport was the only thing that made the sewers bearable. Most of my time here was spent trying to get a decent screenshot of dolls.

this was the best i could do

I made it out of the sewers alive. Although smelly, I was relatively unharmed. With all three quest items in my possession, I could finally open the door to the Durance of Hate. There was just the tiny problem of murdering the council members blocking my way. The biggest challenge here was keeping Ilzan alive. He lost life quickly against all of the hydras and firebolts and I ended up teleporting around to save him.

everyone knows that politicians bleed gold

The council was dead and I was free to enter Mephisto's lair. I found more dolls, zombies, a few vampires, and even some urdar.

urdar!

Inside I finally found my opportunity to get a combat picture with the dolls. When/if I get to Nightmare, I'll explain in detail why I'm not at all afraid of dolls.

what the hell is going on in this picture

I killed a bunch of stuff and some time later found Durance Level 3 and this jackass. Yet again I had to save Ilzan with teleport from fireballs and meteors and other assorted carnage. The charged bolts were a little dangerous, but I survived

I was almost out of Act 3. I went to town to stock up on potions, and then charged in to fight Mephisto. I was confident in how this battle would go because I had antidote and thawing potions, and because Mephisto hits like a sissy.

the elusive evil force, caught on camera for the first time

A few seconds, one health potion, and several static fields later, I was victorious and claimed my steaming pile of loot.

great

Here's my gear and csheet at the beginning of Act 4:
Helmet: Garnet Mask of Brilliance (26 Defense, +8 Energy, Fire Resist +28%
Weapon: Fiery Bone Wand of Piercing (25-59 Fire Damage, Ignore Target Defense)
Shield: Sturdy Bone Shield of Deflecting (39 Defense, 60% Block)
Armor: Gemmed Breastplate (67 Defense, +34 Life, Fire Resist +30%)
Gloves: Ocher Light Gauntlets (11 Defense, Lightning Resist +17%)
Belt: Belt of the Tiger (5 Defense, +27 Life)
Boots: Sander's Riprap
Ring1: Rare Ring (from the picture in a previous chapter)
Ring2: Coral Ring (Lightning Resist +28%)
Ammy: Russet Amulet (Fire Resist +15%)

Chapter 12: Izual and Friends
+ Show Spoiler +
I made it to the wonderful land of Act 4. Let's take a little tour and I'll point out the local wildlife unique to this area.

These guys are called Venom Lords. You would think such a large monster would have a strong melee attack, but a Venom Lord's real weapon is its fire breath. With max Fire Resistance you'll still take sizable damage, A large group of these can surround you and kill you extremely quick, so you need to make sure you're only fighting 3 or so at a time.

Another local enemy is what Blizzard calls a Finger Mage. These things are basically just weak ghosts with a special mana draining, homing magic attack. Nothing to worry about with any character and certainly not worth a picture.

These are called hags. They constantly cough out miniature hags that have a melee attack almost as strong as a venom lord's. They also have an absolutely brutal normal melee attack. The little ones aren't too hard to kill with Shiver Armor, but they disrupt Ilzan's attack. I have to teleport on top of them to get Ilzan to hit the right target.

Corpse spitters are another enemy new to Act 4. They're a weird Cthulhu-looking monster that likes to eat corpses and spit a giant ball of guts and acid at you. Corpse spitters aren't extremely dangerous, but their missile attack can be painful. If you have a high block% rating, you can deflect it.

The other enemy introduced in Act 4 is the Abyss Knight / Oblivion Knight. I'll talk about these when I get to the Chaos Sanctuary. There are also maggots and urdar from Act 2, and sometimes leapers, gloams, tainted, and others can spawn.

if I fall here, i'm suing the shit out of you Halbu

I descended the decidedly unsafe-looking steps to the Outer Steppes and looked around. Thankfully no leapers were in sight. I encountered a few Venom Lords and Corpse Spitters and found my way across the drab landscape to the Plains of Despair. It was there I confronted the fallen angel Izual. He has a high amount of health, but killing him is a short process with static field. After incinerating Izual with my wand, I eventually returned to town to spend my shiny new skill points on Energy Shield.

epic combat picture

Even though I had Energy Shield, using it now would only drain my mana. Right now I don't have enough mana, gear, or skill points to support Energy Shield, but in some situations it might come in handy.

After fighting hundreds of assorted flavors of demons, I found the halfway point of Act 4, the City of the Damned waypoint. The second half was what worried me

Melee sorc? Are you only staying in Normal? Because in Hell you cannot survive even a single hit from a Mana Burn boss.

Even in Normal, I am skeptical that you can beat it easily without going through heavy grinding.

In A1, it comes from smacking stuff with a scepter and the mercenary. In the rest of normal, it comes from the mercenary, static field, whatever garbage weapon I'm using, and the surprisingly large amount of damage Shiver Armor does. In nightmare it comes from Enchant, Static Field, Fire/Cold/Lightning Mastery and elemental damage from gear and charms. The elemental mastery skills add damage once from the gear and a second time on your attack. In hell, the damage will come from a Passion runesword (or whatever garbage weapon I get before that), static, and lots of Lightning Mastery.

It's definitely not the fastest killing build in the world, especially when I'm scavenging items. When you're invincible, it doesn't really matter how fast you kill things. lol

Passion is a horrible weapon. Not only does it have a 25% hit monster to flee, it only gives you +1 Zeal, which on a Long/Rune/Cryptic Sword Phase Blade on a sorc, needs way too many +skill items to reach 6 frames per attack.

Your best bet is to find a War/Rune Scepter or Caduceus (good luck on that one) with 4os and +3 Zeal. This is an extremely rare find; if I recall correctly they have high ilvl and in somewhat weird drop class.

EDIT1: Regardless, I am not sure if you have actually tried the setup in SP before, but this kind of energy shield builds does not survive in Hell due to a Mana Burn bug. Just don't go into Hell.. or Nightmare, for that matter. You will die instantly.

EDIT2: Also, I think you only need 16 in telekinesis to get the best out of Energy Shield. You should double check this.

The reason I chose Passion is because the runes are easy to find, and because of Zeal. Why is it good for a melee sorceress?
+25% Increased Attack Speed
+160-210% Enhanced Damage (varies)
damage is good obviously, not the best numbers in the world but theyre decent

50-80% Bonus To Attack Rating (varies)
This is good because melee sorceresses have shit for AR. AR% is nice

+75% Damage To Undead
+50 To Attack Rating Against Undead
who cares

Adds 1-50 Lightning Damage
lightning mastery double multiplier

+1 To Berserk
+1 To Zeal
Melee sorceresses have no weapon skills. I'll be using at the very least +3 skills from easy gear. Zeal basically removes all problems this character has with melee attacking.

Hit Blinds Target +10
Hit Causes Monster To Flee 25%
terror/dim vision is decent crowd control

75% Extra Gold From Monsters
not really important

Level 3 Heart of Wolverine (12 Charges)
decent ar% and damage

Can't say I really blame you for doubting how well this works because it sounds like nonsense on paper. It's also going to be something of a "challenge."

Most of the damage reduction won't be coming from Energy Shield. Energy Shield is a nice buffer before I take any actual damage. I probably won't have it at a high level. Shiver Armor and Defiance add a metric fuckload of defense. I'll also have max block. Most damage I take is physical and this helps to remove a large portion of the incoming damage. PDR reduces a flat sum off the top of any damage I take and it isn't terribly hard to find Sol runes. Finding the proper items to not die in hell is part of the fun.

I think you might be missing the point of why I'm doing this. If I just wanted to kill things easy I would make an orb/fireball sorc.

The damage isn't all that impressive unless you put a fuckload of skill points.

There used to be a bug where the damage didn't reduce below 100% after 16 pts. I think I've read somewhere in the patch notes that it was fixed.

I think you're going to die as soon as you find an extra fast mana burn pack, because I doubt you'll find enough FHR charms to be able to pot + teleport away in time.

But, I was always a pussy who made trapsins/summonmancers/lightning sorcs, so I dunno. GL bro

Also, you'll need help for certain bosses, I can't see you beating nm ancients or duriel with a melee sorc haha:D

What's the point of damage reduction items? Mana shield gets applied before all physical reduction/resistance, and once you get up to 95% damage blocked, it's really a question of whether you run out of mana first.

Edit: nm, a level 1 energy shield sorc. Try getting damage goes to mana items, infinite mana.

nm ancients are tough for anyone. Melee sorcs have a couple things that give them a fair chance. As long as I don't hit lightning immunes, I should be able to do it. (and if I do get LE, I'll reroll them)

Normal Duriel (i assume you mean) is tough for any melee character, but I have static, which is a huge advantage over a barb or pally trying to solo him. It's going to be tough to get pictures of him for sure lol.

It's so I have as many barriers as I can between me and getting my face blown off. Unfortunately there aren't many good items with damage to mana. The plan is to get Warmth + Insight + bahamut ring(s), which will provide me with enough mana to partially ignore normal enemies.

For the curious, this is the order damage is calculated in:
Energy Shield
PDR, MDR
Resistances
%absorb
+absorb
Damage Taken goes to Mana last

I had a weird build which ignored maxing physical/magical resistances for that reason. I believe I had an upgraded nightsmoke-> tal rasha's, and you could get howltusk and another helm, there were some boots that barely contributes (searched, aldur's). Naj's light plate gives 45%. There's an amulet that gives 10% and angelic gives 20%, those aren't really worth it. There might be shield, but the max block shield is much more useful.

So I'm pretty sure I used Naj's and tal rasha's, and I might have used a helm. As long as you don't run into mana burners and you keep your energy shield from becoming too high, you get infinite energy shield reduction. Whereas otherwise your energy shield is a just some extra vitality which drains like 4x as fast as your hp. I was teleporting through gloams like nobodies business.

Edit: I guess somebody wrote up a thread on it
http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=512466
You only need 75% damage goes to mana to offset 50% energy shield
225% to offset 75%, to which you can get reasonably close.
Of course if you have 75% resistance, you have to multiply the needed damage goes to mana by 4.

I don't remember if I used ith runes, but Naj's with ith, howltusk with ith, and tal rasha's gives about 150%, which can support 67% energy shield reduction. That's level 14, which is good because who wants to waste all their skill points in energy shield?

I liked this because Naj's only requires 79 strength, nightsmoke and howltusk are relatively easy to acquire.

Fuck yes Passion sorcs with max block are fun as anything.

I made one with energy shield on top of everything else and had enough manadrain to pretty much maintain it so long as I could land hits on my targets, which let me be pretty survivable in hell (but never kill anything because the damage is ugh).

you've inspired me to begin a d2 character in anticipation for the expansion. unfortunately google search isn't getting me the results i want for a character build. i'd copy this one but i've played a bunch of sorceressi and wanna try something else. any chance you could link me to an interesting build such as the one you've got here? maybe for one of the two expo characters as i've played the hell out of the original five

I think it depends on what you define as interesting. My personal favorite character to play is a Freezing Arrow amazon. It's effective in Hell, fairly durable if you pay attention, and you don't need terribly good items to make it work. It's fun because your attack is like a laser beam that erases enemies completely. The attack does splash damage and with pierce you can hit groups of enemies several times with one arrow. The build is something like this:

bow skills
20 Freezing Arrow
20 Cold Arrow (+damage synergy)
1 Multishot (if you have garbage items or nothing, get 5 points here)
1 Guided Arrow (you won't use this as much but it's useful to have)
1 Strafe (an alternative to multishot in some areas)
1 to prerequisites

passive skills
2 critical strike (if you have trash gear, you want this around 6 points)
5 pierce (if you have garbage items or nothing, get 10 points here)
1 dodge/evade/avoid

20 penetrate
This isn't important to do right away, but by the time you're in Hell, it's very hard to hit monsters without a ton of points here.

if you're playing hardcore:
5+ valkyrie

The rest of the points you can do whatever you want with. Pierce is nice, Valkyrie is nice, whatever really.

Frozenstein is naturally with this combination, on any difficulty.

But yea, this is what I am saying as well. This is a fairly difficult class to run. In fact, melee sorcs are largely gimmicks regardless how much godly gear you put on her (yes, including dual-dream setups).

What I am mostly worried is not that the build is poor; it's that OP claims it's done in hardcore.

All I remember from playing hardcore is getting destroyed in the Durance of Hate from the bone things (can't recall the name I called them little shits) that explode when you kill them.

Good luck man, awesome blog.

If you've got mules full of high runes and stuff like that to waste, make a Beast caduceus and I promise you'll have a ton of fun. I'm not sure if it's the same in wusscore, but I assume the reaction is similar when they see a sorc turns into a bear.

MedianXL is just a mpq file that replaces the original D2 mpq and that's it. You don't have to do anything complicated.

I played through it a while back using the high-res mod, MedianXL, and PlugY. That takes a bit more finagling to get to work together. PlugY lets you have an infinite stash and share it across characters among other things.

Personally I prefer the original D2 to MedianXL but obviously the original D2 gets stale if you've played as much on bnet over the years as I have. However, there is another mod I played through called Eastern Sun that I think is way better than MedianXL despite being significantly smaller than the latter. It preserves many of the original D2 skills but has a completely different cube system and all new items/sets, which is what I enjoy most about D2 -- finding items.

Of course all of these single player mods are boring as hell compared to online play but again, I've played way too much D2 + I quit playing awhile back just due to the lack of players + lack of interest in being ultra rich + PVPing, since PvE died ages ago when dupes and maphacks and bots took over everything.

Yeah, it takes quite a bit of discipline to battle through nightmare and hell mode when you could just get rushed to hell and do chaos runs til level 65, and then Baal runs until you can solo your own bosses...I think a single-player mod is exactly what I need, as it adds in the additional benefits of having new skills, items, story etc.

Did you play vanilla originally? I seem to remember that after LoD, the game started dropping mass amounts of rare, socketed, and unique items once it was installed. I think I got a unique from bishbosh once and was like "WTF?!"

Median is not a mod that changes D2 code, as many other mods are, it just modifies the stats and stuff. (so it's Mac friendly)

To install it, you basically do what Gianfe2 said, just download the Patch_d2.mpq and put it in your d2 folder (backup the old file if you want to go back to normal D2, or dl the mod changer).

There are a few online servers (pm me if you wanna know), some with high standards - no stealing/safe muling (you get the items back and the thief is banned), no foul language/names, antihacks (depending on the server), etc.
The modder is active, changing the mod every once in a while, and balancing it all the time, taking input from the community. He's known for his sarcastic/realistic nature though, but everyone loves him. The mod has gotten several awards and placed at the top5-top10 of the mods voting (not just d2 mods, but all mods) a few times, even though it has no code modding. Even blizzard said they're amazed at the mod and it's features, in an interview, and are going to utilize some ideas from it for D3.

+ Show Spoiler [Mod features] +

About the mod, all new skills and oskills (there are a few uberskills which you get from finishing some hard uberquests, or if you're high enough level). Almost every skill build that makes even remote sense can be played.
All new items now each item has 6 tiers (levels, each with better base stats) + the highest tier 'Sacred item' + set items that are basically sacred sets (endgame stuff, unlike LoD).
New monsters, some area monsters moved.
More runes and gems. 1 rune runewords (you fill the rest of the sockets with (crafted) jewels). Great runes that drop only on uberquests.
Many cube recipes, you can raise tiers of items to make them stronger, you can make your own tiered unique items (but not set or sacred unique items, which are the strongest).
New defense/block mechanic. Now characters don't exclusively use max vita ignore rest.
It's hard. It makes you learn how to play, instead of mindless 1 skill/spell spamming. You use MINIMUM 2 skills actively, but most it's 3-4.
Levels are capped at 120, and you can reach them pretty easily (compared to LoD). That's when the fun starts. You usually hit about 120 once you finish the highest difficulty and that's when the real Median XL starts - uberquests.

There are like 30 uberquests (and uberbosses), ranging from easy to impossible, and when I say impossible I mean it, unlike D2, you die like a slapped fly in those. Finishing those takes knowledge, skill and some luck. There are some insane people that farm those for trophies (those have a 2% chance to drop, and you can cube them with the charm to get even greater bonuses).

You can disenchant sets into signets that give you stats, you disenchant 5 uniques to get an arcane crystal with which you can do a lot of useful things. So unlike LoD, you don't throw those away.

Here is the official features list (but don't be fooled, there's more than that):
http://modsbylaz.hugelaser.com/introduction.html

There's much much more, but it would fill more than one page, so I'm just going to stop, since it's kinda offtopic, but I assure you, if you enjoy playing offbeat characters/skills in D2, you'll love median, since there you can do this 5x more there.

Visit the official page http://modsbylaz.hugelaser.com/.

Oh yea, the Hell Unleashed mod is awesome too.

where does the damage come from?

I'm fairly sure staffmods are class-specific, so even if he finds a Caduceus with +Zeal, it won't give his sorceress the Zeal skill.

Passion is fine for a melee sorc but you need decent equipment to handle hell.

A short story somewhat related: In classic, the Brasilians used to call me Foofy (my baba's name) Big Balls because I would whirlwind through giant packs of hell cows. This was at a time when the general consensus was that a barb should be whirlwind, lance mastery, and BO, so the majority of people had no idea how I could survive. (I used a mallet/shield, embossed plate for lower max str (125), and iron skin/shout instead of maxing mastery)

VACA TEM AKII???? AUEHAUHEUAHEUHAEA

p.s. Everyone should try playing hardcore. It adds a level of depth and excitement to the game.

Chapter 13: The Chaos Sanctuary
+ Show Spoiler +
The second half of Act 4 takes place in an area called the River of Flame. As you might imagine, this area consists mainly of lava and annoying enemies.

someone better fix these goddamn rickety steps

From the City of the Damned waypoint, I took the stairs down to the River of Flame. In the first section, there are two types of monsters that make up the majority, as well as champions and bosses that can be of any type. What types did I get? Hags and maggots.

i hate bugs

This combination turned out to be slightly easier than I first imagined. Shiver Armor helped to kill the minions and teleport + Ilzan helped to focus damage on the bigger targets. The hags still hit like trucks, but Ilzan and my cold damage and teleport helped to mitigate most of the damage. As I was exploring, the quest button popped up to let me know the Hellforge was nearby. Right on cue, Hephasto the Armorer came out all by himself. In Normal he's a major wuss anyway, so let's ignore that whole part and skip to a picture of my incredible Hellforge drop!

a nef rune, amazing!

At this point I would like to draw attention to the depressing state of my gem collection. One of my future goals is to make a Perfect Diamond shield. As of right now, all I have in my stash are two Flawed Diamonds.

With Hephasto dead and my gem collection securely stashed away, my journey through hell continued. I warped to the River of Flame waypoint, the halfway marker between the two areas. The ground in this area changed from ash-covered stone to chiseled steps and carvings. It was some sort of demonic bridge crossing the River of Flame on its way to the Chaos Sanctuary.

I took this only because I liked the statues

This section is home to Abyss Knights, monsters who regularly end up killing hardcore newbies with their magic attack. Although they have a strong attack, their defenses are weak. With a little timing, I could teleport next to individual knights and murder them.

abyss knights? more like rainbow knights

I made it across the bridge to the entrance of the Chaos Sanctuary. The enemies inside are extremely dangerous, so my strategy would be to force them into small groups if possible to lower the incoming damage to a bearable level. I fought a fierce battle at the door and when the dust settled, Ilzan and I were the only things alive.

lets see you try shutting the door now Diablo

The Chaos Sanctuary is home to Oblivion Knights, a special type of enemy that have an elemental attack and a repertoire of necromancer curses. The most famous ability they have is the Iron Maiden curse, which reflects a percentage of your physical melee damage back to you. Generally, if cursed while attacking, this results in your death. Even now I still jump whenever I hear the sound of Iron Maiden.

Inside, the Sanctuary is split into three wings, with a giant pentagram taking up the central area. Each wing holds a magic seal which must be broken to summon Diablo. I had to move slowly and stick to the walls to avoid activating too many monsters. I broke the first seal and summoned the first boss, the Grand Vizier of Chaos. This guy is a finger mage (read: wuss) and I had no problem feeding him a big mug full of murder.

The second wing is is guarded by Lord De Seis, an Extra Strong Oblivion Knight who always has a Fanaticism aura. Those attributes plus Amplify Damage/Decrepify are extremely bad for my safety, so I led his minions out of the Fanaticism aura and dealt with them first. With his minions gone, De Seis was just another Oblivion Knight.

thirsty for danger

My battle against De Seis wasn't without reward. He decided to drop a shiny new circlet for me! I wouldn't be Level 27 in time for Diablo, but I'm sure it'll be useful later on.

pretty sure that's supposed to say "Sorceress"

The final guardian was the hardest of the three. This guy is so dangerous that I wasn't sure how I would even survive opening the seal. The Infector of Souls always spawns with Extra Fast and Spectral Hit attributes. A pack of Extra Fast Venom Lords is not something to take lightly, and the Spectral Hit attribute doubles their physical attack with a random type of elemental damage. If a picture is worth a thousand words, I'll save time explaining how I dealt with the boss by showing you this picture. Basically if you don't get it from the picture, I microed around the terrain to prevent the majority of the enemies from fighting me at once.

As the Infector of Souls' corpse steamed and melted into the floor, the Chaos Sanctuary began to shake. Diablo had finally arrived. I felt properly prepared from the last battle and my belt was restocked and full of potions. My fire and lightning resist were both 75%, so I hoped I had enough life to survive Diablo's red lightning breath. As I made my approach, a wave of fire washed over me, not harming me in the slightest, but bringing Ilzan's health dangerously low. I teleported on top of Diablo as fast as I could to force him into melee combat. I kept Diablo occupied at close range with Static Field while Ilzan poked at his scaly hide from behind.

Noticing that his claw attacks were useless against me, Diablo inhaled deeply and I watched in horror as he started to unleash his lightning breath attack. Something happened next that may be a Diablo 2 first: Sander's boots saved my life. The extra running speed allowed me to move out of the way quickly enough that I was only mildly singed and still very much alive. He tried to catch me with his breath again, but I was too fast and furious. When his attack momentarily paused, I assume to breathe in again, I took the opportunity to teleport on top of him and end the battle permanently.

Sadly the only thing of any value he dropped was this belt, which I immediately put on:

I took a few victory laps around the Pandemonium Fortress before leaving for Act 5. More danger and excitement were sure to await me there.

Here's a list of my equipment at the beginning of Act 5:
Helmet: Garnet Mask of Brilliance (26 Defense, +8 Energy, Fire Resist +28%)
Weapon: Fiery Bone Wand of Piercing (25-59 Fire Damage, Ignore Target Defense)
Shield: Ocher Gothic Shield of Deflecting (32 Defense, Lightning Resist +18%, 56% Block)
Armor: Gemmed Breastplate (67 Defense, +34 Life, Fire Resist +30%)
Gloves: Ocher Light Gauntlets (11 Defense, Lightning Resist +17%)
Belt: Rare Belt (14 Defense, Lightning Resist +30%) from Diablo, pictured above
Boots: Sander's Riprap
Ring1: Rare Ring (from the picture)
Ring2: Coral Ring (Lightning Resist +28%)
Ammy: Russet Amulet (Fire Resist +15%)

Chapter 14: The Bloody Foothills and Vietnam
+ Show Spoiler +
Fresh off the boat to Act 5, I cracked open the gate that lead out of town and entered the war zone that was known as the Bloody Foothills. A semi-interesting fact about this area is that no random bosses or champions will spawn here on Normal. There are two enemies that spawn here: Enslaved and Lurkers. They both do physical damage, so I have no problem fighting them. Compared to Chaos Sanctuary, this place is like a field of daisies.

random combat posing!

Halfway up the Bloody Foothills, Dac Farren harasses travelers. He has a fireball attack and an annoying habit of teleporting and running away. I grabbed him by the hair and kneed him in the face several times, then tossed him off the nearby cliff Double Dragon style.

hold still you little shit

Shenk the Overseer lives at the top of the Bloody Foothills. He's big and fat and carries a whip. One of the special talents of the overseer-type monsters is that they can changed enslaved into suicide bombers. The explosion does some cold damage and can be blocked. Another interesting fact: Ilzan is immune to the suicide explosion attack.

Above the Bloody Foothills lies the Frigid Highlands, guarded by the friendly and well-mannered Eldritch the Rectifier and even more annoying imps.

Also, there are catapults in Act 5.

catapults!

Trying to catch the Imps with my wand brought back memories. I had played this scenario out before and I had memories of a character very similar to this in the distant past. This character reminds me of playing a high-level warrior in Diablo 1.

If you've never played a level 40+ warrior, let me give you some kind of mental image. In hell, every monster with a ranged attack runs away when you start to get close to them. Because everything walks at the same speed, it is literally impossible to get close to them. The only way you can catch them is by herding the monsters into a corner where they have no place to run.

What ends up happening is that you need to cast teleport to get next to monsters and then lock them in place with hit recovery animations and a fast sword. This means you have to wear +mana and +magic gear so you'll have enough mana to cast Teleport every time you want to kill a monster. I could go on and on, but the main idea to take away from this is that Diablo 1 is fucking hard with a warrior. It brought back memories of how I lost my leg back in 'Nam.

WHAT HAPPENED? VIET GODDAMN NAM'S WHAT HAPPENED

While I was tossing grenades and machine gunning my way through Charlie, I found a Kite Shield with golden letters! What ever could it be?

my shiny new Steelclash!

While exploring, I came across this portal. I wasn't feeling particularly stupid today, so I declined to enter.

noooooooooooooope

There was a fatty guarding the Crystalline Passage, but I threw his cheeseburger on the ground and made him cry.

Next my adventure would take me to the Crystalline Passage, Frozen River, and beyond! (scary!)

Chapter 15: The Frozen River
+ Show Spoiler +
My heroic quest for today was to rescue Anya from the Frozen River. First, I had to do some shopping to even out my gear. While browsing the stores, I saw a set of interesting knives that I had to try out.

what exactly makes a throwing knife massive?

I equipped the massive throwing knives and ran around a bit to test them out.

I replaced my tired old breastplate with some +Life platemail and also bought some new gloves and a slight wand upgrade. With that done, I started down the Crystalline Passage.

i'm somewhere in this picture

I feel I should mention the Evil Urn. When opened, it spits out a random boss somewhere on the screen, usually right on top of you. Balls of steel are certainly helpful but not mandatory.

While exploring, I ran into some yetis and managed to capture photographic proof of their existence. I was stunned by their being much uglier than expected

the elusive samswanch (you must be canadian to get this reference)

I found that the yetis were guarding the entrance to the Frozen River. Inside, there were even more yetis as well as zombies and other creatures. There is a lot of murder in this game, and this area was no exception. Some time passed and I found Anya's prison, guarded by Lord Frozenstein, ruler of all yetis.

Cold damage is never fun to deal with, but Ilzan still had his Hawkmail and my static isn't slowed by chilling. It didn't take long before I had permanently ended the yeti dynasty.

There were a few die-hard stragglers, but I put them into the ground to rescue the princess.

the princess, being "rescued"

Thankful to be rescued, Anya gave me a shitty wand in gratitude. I made sure to sell it in Act 4 where she wouldn't notice.

For fun, I thought I would give Pindleskin a quick run and see what shinies he would drop.

this is probably a familiar screen to the majority of you

To my absolute surprise, he dropped a rare sorceress wand! I rushed back to town to identify it and was not disappointed, although I imagine the majority of sorceresses would be.

muhuhwahahaha

I had reached Level 30, which gave me access to the wonderful Lightning and Cold Masteries! My weapon damage doubled with a single skill point, and Shiver Armor's chilling power was increased to new levels.

My journey would next bring me face to face with the Ancients. I would need some time to improve my gear and gain a few levels before I decided to take them on.

+ Show Spoiler +
Did you think I was going to fight Nihlathak next? Aaaaaahahahahhahahahhahaha ha ha hahahahaha

Chapter 16: The Ancients and Baal
+ Show Spoiler +
Before I could hope to defeat the Ancients, I had to get some better gear. Glorious Platemail of the Tiger and a bone wand wouldn't be enough to win that battle. I started doing some basic Magic Find runs to hopefully find something to boost my chances of success against the Ancients. I ran Shenk, Eldritch, Pindle, and then the Crystalline Passage for experience and so the game timer would be long enough to not lock me out.

I found a few useful things and a lot of useless things. For the useful, I found a Rattlecage (on my very first run!), a rare pike for Ilzan, rare gauntlets for me, and a Sol rune to eventually make the mighty Insight runeword. For the useless, I found several Isenhart's pieces, a Cleglaw's sword, Civerb's Cudgel, and piles of garbage rares. I also found two Skull Splitters and a Cathan's ring which I donated to a dirty hippie who was starting a new character. Why didn't I wear the Cathan's ring myself? I'll answer your question with another question: What's 6% of 7?

My friend joined a free item giveaway game, so I helped him put his shiny new items on a mule for safekeeping.
if you're one of those people who puts shaftstop on a merc, i hate you

My good deed done for the day, I returned to Act 5. I traveled across the Frozen Tundra to the hidden tunnel known as The Ancient's Way. My favorite boss in the game lives here, in an area called the Icy Cellar.

best. name. ever.

The Ancient's Way opened out to the Arreat Summit, where the Ancients silently waited.

most of these are fullscreenable

I sent out my challenge and the Ancients came to life and attacked.

can you guess which ancient is my favorite?

With the Ancients clustered around me, it only took a few static fields to end the battle. I was victorious without using a single potion. The gate to the Worldstone Keep stood open.

I found this demon inside the keep, somehow floating in the air.

photo taken shortly before murder

My journey down to the Throne of Destruction ended up being rather short.

The angry red glow of the chamber glowered up at me. The Death Lord/Frenzytaur monsters here are terrifyingly immune to being chilled/frozen and the Succubus use a Blood Star spell which ignores my magical resistances. None of that would stop me.

I gathered my power level for 5 minutes and then unleashed my severe fighting spirit to clear a path to Baal.

kameeeeeee hameeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

My attack had killed every living creature in a 5 mile radius, but Baal sat on his throne completely unharmed. He cackled maniacally and his minions appeared in a flash of light between us.

I dispatched Baal's minions by pulling them out of the range of Baal's Decrepify curse and then viciously Static Fielding their life away. Even with his minions dead, Baal continued to laugh. He played his trump card and summoned his strongest lieutenant, Lister the Tormenter.

The Minions of Destruction have the strongest physical attack in the game, capable in Normal of dealing up to 60 damage in one strike and with a knockback and stun component. Ilzan and I weren't capable of winning this battle while outnumbered, so to even the odds I slowed some of the minions with Shiver Armor and made a tactical retreat, separating some of the beasts from Lister and friends. With the numbers temporarily thinned, I had no trouble defeating the minions for good. Lister's Spectral Hit was still very dangerous, but my armor caught the majority of his attacks while I worked to end his life.

Baal's laugh sounded hollow as he retreated into the Worldstone Chamber. The final battle was close. I knew that there were only two ways for it to end: Baal would die or I would.

I entered the chamber and teleported to Baal's side to begin the final contest. Baal had a variety of deadly attacks at his disposal, but I was prepared for all of them. I countered his lethal frost wave attack with high cold resistance and by using teleport to return from the knockback. Baal's powerful mana-draining inferno spell was easily recovered from with a mana potion.

My static field bit into Baal's life bar, taking large chunks away with each cast. Baal pushed me away with a frost wave, but I was close to unharmed and Ilzan's Hawkmail made him immune to Cold damage. Baal's attacks were too weak to harm me. The battle was over and I was victorious.

hows that floor taste

Having defeated Baal, I was crowned with the title Destroyer, signifying my clearing of Normal Difficulty. My quest would continue again in Nightmare Difficulty, where the monsters would be even stronger. I would have to train and improve my kung fu before I could set foot in Nightmare.

congratulations me!

Here's a list of my gear at the end of Act 5:
Helmet: Rare Circlet (the same one from A4)
Weapon: Rare Jared's Stone (pictured above)
Shield: Steelclash (57 Defense)
Armor: Rattlecage (332 Defense)
Gloves: Rare Gauntlets (22 Defense, +10 Attack Rating, +1 Strength, +4 Dexterity, Lightning Resist +27%, 11% Better Chance of Finding Magic Item)
Belt: Garnet Belt of the Wolf (+18 Life, Fire Resist +28%)
Boots: Sander's Riprap
Ring1: Rare Ring (from the picture in A3)
Ring2: Coral Ring (Lightning Resist +28%)
Ammy: Dragon's Amulet (+35 Mana)

nightmare resistances hoo boy

Chapter 17: Leveling and Loose Ends
+ Show Spoiler +
I had the option to go into Nightmare difficulty, but I knew that was a terrible idea. Nightmare random bosses are incredibly powerful. I could see myself getting ambushed by an Extra Strong Cold Enchanted Quill Rat and ending up on the ground full of icy holes. My measly 300 life and 10ish cold resistance weren't enough to protect me. Clearly I had to find some new gear and level up.

Several hours later I was level 40 and had sifted through a mountain of garbage. I had only found a total of two items that I could make use of:

I was tired of leveling, so I decided to go into Nightmare. "Why not?" I told myself. "You only have to do the Den of Evil. What's the worst that could happen?"

The Blood Moor wasn't difficult. I cautiously approached a group of Champion Fallen and when I saw their attack was only around 40 damage, my level of worry diminished. The Den of Evil turned out to be easy and Corpsefire went down quickly. Nightmare seemed easy enough from what I had seen. The lure of better items and a 4 socket polearm for Insight drew me on into the Cold Plains. The enemies were more dense here, but still just as easy.

Feeling adventurous, I thought I would fight Blood Raven. Static brought her minions down, and soon we were alone together.

this isn't the intro to a porn, I swear.

It took a while to chase her down and force her below 25% health, but eventually I did and found my amazing reward.

I went through the Stony Field, rescued Cain, and found the final piece to craft an Insight for Ilzan. I also had a very close encounter with an Extra Strong Fire Enchanted boss, which made me reevaluate my stance on tackling Nightmare.

beautiful, isn't it?

I decided I would try the cow level with my new Meditation aura. I thought I could find some new charms and a helm to make a Lore runeword with. The rare circlet I was wearing wasn't exactly ideal.

I wasn't sure how dangerous the cows were. In curiosity I checked my character sheet.

I like those odds

Feeling confident, I teleported around, murdering cows with wild abandon. I could teleport into the largest herds of cows and stand unharmed.

can you spot me in this picture

The cow level was no challenge for my kung fu. I didn't feel like going on with the MF, so I decided I would kill Nihlathak.

Nihlathak's temple looks like the lair of an ancient cult, dedicated to worshiping the horrific old gods and performing daemoniacal rites.

what the hell is that

Fortunately, I was well protected from unknowable, terrifying horrors by my high Insanity Resistance. The mad cultists and their eldritch lords from beyond the void of space were still weak to Static Field.

Nihlathak himself waited at the bottom of the catacombs, standing atop a pagan altar with a horde of misshapen, inhuman minions, all wielding pointy weapons. I heard the high pitched squeal of Nihlathak's corpse explosion behind me. In horror and fearing for my eternal soul, I glanced at my life total. I had lost 30 HP. Confident in my invulnerability, I introduced Nihlathak to the great beyond.

Normal had nothing left for me, but I still had lots of work to do before I could survive Nightmare.

Chapter 18: Returning to Nightmare
+ Show Spoiler +
My quest for items was finally complete. I had made a Lore helm, a 3 Perfect Diamond Tower Shield, and I had found enough +life charms where I felt safe attempting Nightmare again.

a fancy shmancy charm

I picked up in Nightmare where I had left off, in the Dark Wood. The extra resistance from the shield and the Lore helm's skill point and damage reduction made a big difference as I encountered the many random Elemental-Enchanted bosses lurking about. I accidentally took a Fire Enchanted's death explosion in the chest when Ilzan killed one boss too quickly and was happy to see my life barely drop.

one of the nightmare random bosses

There used to be a bug in Nightmare difficulty where fire enchanted bosses would deal an improperly calculated amount of damage with their corpse explosion, which would instantly kill anyone regardless of how much health, resistance, or absorption they had. I recall someone made a character specifically to calculate how much damage the explosion did, using various gear to try and survive. If I remember correctly, the damage was calculated to be something around 300,000.

I decided I would kill the Countess for a chance at her increased rune drop rate. On the bottom floor of the tower, I found three random bosses clustered together behind the staircase. There's always a small moment of terror when you see more than one boss and have to quickly identify their attributes before you get in combat. Ilzan was far too strong for such lowly monsters and they were dispatched before I could think to take a picture.

I'll link this amulet because I think I found it somewhere around here:

shiny!

The Countess herself proved to be more than Ilzan could handle alone. When I teleported into the room, Ilzan valiantly gave his life protecting me from the vicious blue women. However, I was far more durable than Ilzan and managed to defeat the Countess and avenge his death. That would prove to be my only reward because the Countess had dropped a Thul rune.

With the Countess defeated, I continued on to the monastery where Andariel lived. Naturally, I intended to stop her from living.

In the jail beneath the monastery I encountered my old nemesis Pitspawn Fouldog. Unfortunately for him, I had grown in power far more than he had since our fight in Normal. He was no longer a match for me.

The jail was soon behind me as I reached the Inner Cloister. I discovered the gate to the cathedral had a horrible guardian.

lightning IMMUNE? WHAT?

How could I defeat a creature completely and totally immune to lightning? Have you seen a lightning strike before? What am I going to do that a lightning bolt can't? As i pondered these and other important questions, Ilzan solved the problem by murdering the offending monster with a swift pike jab.

There were more random monsters patrolling the way to Andariel and I killed all of them. The battle with Andariel wasn't particularly exciting. Ilzan had a heart attack at the sight of her giant blue breasts and I was forced to fight her alone.

what's with this game and giant naked blue women

An interesting fact about Nightmare: Static Field only brings enemies to 25% health. This means I had to slap Andariel the rest of the way with my wand. Rattlecage and crushing blow helped out a lot here and it ended up taking about a minute of wand spanking before I won the battle and collected my shiny, shiny rewards.

fuck off ilzan, i'm cookin marshmallows

The ring turned out to be surprisingly good.

yes i will be wearing that, thank you for asking

I didn't particularly want Aldur's Rhythm, but it is much better than my current wand. I would have preferred a different item (vipermagi maybe?), but I could have gotten much worse. 3 sockets is also very nice.

I swear I find one of these every time I go through nightmare

Here's my gear as of Act 2 Nightmare:
Helmet: Lore Full Helm (25 Defense, +1 to All Skills, +10 Energy, Lightning Resist +30%, Damage Reduced by 7, +2 Mana after each Kill, +2 to Light Radius)
Weapon: Aldur's Rhythm (shown above)
Shield: Gemmed Tower Shield (23 Defense, 44% block, +57 Resist All)
Armor: Rattlecage (332 Defense)
Gloves: Rare Gauntlets (22 Defense, +10 Attack Rating, +1 Strength, +4 Dexterity, Lightning Resist +27%, 11% Better Chance of Finding Magic Item)
Belt: Rare Heavy Belt (from previous chapter)
Boots: Rare Greaves (from previous chapter)
Ring1: Rare Ring (from normal A3)
Ring2: Rare Ring (from NM A1)
Ammy: Rare Amulet (from the picture)

Chapter 19: The Staff... Again
+ Show Spoiler +
My quest today was to run through the desert and raid various tombs for the staff pieces and also treasure. Naturally, that would make my first stop the sewers. Strangely, my search through the sewers didn't turn up anything of value.

oh you want this treasure? here, please have it!

After exploring the sewers, I searched the Rocky Wastes and found a tomb inches away from the town gate.

no one noticed this before? seriously?

My quest for booty wouldn't let me pass by such an easy target. After killing a few zombies and a short trip down some stairs, I felt I was close to the treasure. I had a short meeting with Creeping Feature, who it seemed had been keeping up with his kung fu.

no WAY am i getting close to that

The next stop on my treasure hunt was the Maggot Lair to find the first staff piece. The Maggot Lair was bearable because I had teleport to move through cramped areas. There were a lot of bugs here and I splattered them all with my new mace.

Fun Fact: Sometimes people like to replace the first letter of maggot, spelling another word which describes their dislike of the place.

gross

Back in the desert, I encountered some extra fast leapers. What you can't see in the picture is that there are two other bosses to the left.

extra fast leapers, how wonderful

My killing of leapers did not go unrewarded. I found the excellent Darkglow armor and immediately gave it to Ilzan. I upgraded it in the cube for extra defense and threw away his dusty old Hawkmail.

It seemed that the game was packing as many random bosses into a tiny area as it possibly could. When I entered the Viper Temple, I was accosted by a group of lightning enchanted vipers before I had a chance to assess the local threat level.

that's the entrance if you were wondering

Was that the end of the long string of bosses? I still had to deal with Fangskin, the killer of noobs before I could get the last staff piece. I teleported to the middle of the chamber to fight him and his minions one at a time and avoid being surrounded by angry Extra Fast vipers.

fullscreen!

Now that I had the staff to open Tal Rasha's tomb, it was time to find Duriel. The palace cellar is small and easy like always, and Arcane Sanctuary is a joke in Nightmare. The Summoner dies just as fast in Nightmare as he does in Normal difficulty. It wasn't long before I was in the Tomb of Tal Rasha and on my way to Duriel. Of course there were more random bosses that needed to be exterminated.

that's probably less than good

A few minutes and a sandwich later, I was at Duriel's doorstep. Normal Duriel is probably the hardest boss to deal with in Normal. Nightmare Duriel is not. The damage from his freezing aura doesn't scale very well to Nightmare and Duriel ends up hitting just as hard as he did in Normal... only I have twice as much health and 75% Cold Resist.

Ilzan died a few seconds into the battle and I was left to fight it alone. Mercenaries take 1000% damage from Act Bosses, so there wasn't much I could do to save him. It took a minute or two for Shiver Armor and my mace to bring his life from 25% to 0%. It was far from an epic battle.

are you sure this is in nightmare?

Chapter 20: Act 3 - The Revenge
+ Show Spoiler +
Duriel's defeat fresh in my mind, I set off on my journey through Act 3. Most people don't know that Act 3 can be a very dangerous place. It's very easy to skip all of Act 3, and most people do.

I found my way into the Flayer Jungle and a horde of knife wielding midgets appeared and attacked me. There were even champion flayer shamans, although that was mostly a waste of champion status because their fire breath doesn't do much damage in Nightmare.

Later on I encountered giant frogs. They have a ranged attack with knockback, which is extremely annoying. The only nice thing about them is the squishing sound they make when I kill them.

grrr!

While killing swarms of flayers, I found this amulet.

shouldn't that read "Sorceress"?

After a particularly large murder session, I found my way to the Flayer Dungeon.

I'm glad I don't have to clean this up

Inside the Flayer Dungeon, I saw the scariest thing I've seen so far: Extra Strong Fanaticism dolls. Hearing the Fanaticism Aura activation sound gave me time to run. I knew I had to get some kind of picture, but the dungeon architecture combined with the high speed dolls made it difficult.

this is probably the scariest thing you could encounter in the game

How did I kill a pack of Extra Strong Fanaticism dolls? One at a time, obviously. My strategy involved using a rejuvenation potion every time my health moved and also lots of praying. Every time a doll died, my health would plummet and I would have to use a rejuvenation potion before the next one died or the explosion would kill me.

aaargh more dolls

I did eventually make it through to the bottom floor. One of the nice things about it is that there are no dolls. A few teleports later and I was at the treasure room, guarded by the Witch Doctor Endugu. It appeared this time he had acquired some magical immunities.

magic resistant? how about mace resistant?

I went back outside... blah blah blah... The second half of Act 3 is boring and easy and nothing happened. I won't even mention the godawful sewers. I did find this entirely useless item, which I donated to a certain dirty hippie.

that sure is a lot of damage

The hard part was the Durance of Hate. After killing the council, I smashed open the door and descended the stairs, praying for there to be no dolls. My prayer was answered and I made it safely through the maze-like Durance levels 1 and 2.

In Nightmare, the hardest part of Durance Level 3 isn't Mephisto, it's the council members and vampires on the way to him. Bremm Sparkfist and his buddy Wyand Voidbringer decided to attack me together. Bremm Sparkfist was Extra Fast and because Wyand Voidbringer is always Mana Burn, I didn't feel it was entirely safe to take a picture of the battle. I shielded Ilzan from as many Hydra bolts and Meteor strikes as I could and together we finished the remaining council members.

Before I fought Mephisto, I had to refill my potions and purchase a few Antidote potions to block his strong poison attacks. Aside from the poison, none of his attacks were particularly spectacular. Mephisto's melee attack is weak, so it was a matter of trading blows until one of us died. I had the advantage of a full set of health potions which helped me win. Even Ilzan survived the battle.

I was very disappointed with Mephisto's drops.

someone really wants me to use a polearm

In Act 4 Nightmare, I would face the terrors of the Chaos Sanctuary and find a good rune from the Hellforge (hopefully!)

That's the kind of stuff you don't attempt with a melee sorceress on hardcore. :D

God damnit if I want to play melee in HC and feel like a man when I survive, I want to feel like a complete, Iron-Maiden-Avoiding man.

Sure was a pain with mercs though.

I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

They got rid of Iron maiden in the final patch of LoD. Sadly they didn't increase drop rates or make anything else noticeably better except some bug fixes.

Sigh.

This is boss. Can we get youtube of boss fights? e.g. The Ancients/Baal/etc? With commentary of course

It appears I've reached the bandwidth limit for photobucket. Does anyone know a non-suck place I can host the pictures?

I would like to do this, but I'm functionally retarded when it comes to setting up screen capture / streaming programs. I've never had any luck getting them to work, and attempting to do it is an exercise in frustration for me.

As I'm updating the pictures, I've come to realize the horrifying flaws in my screenshot naming and organization methods

You may also want to add Chap 13 to the original OP.

There's a limit on how many pictures TL will display per page unfortunately (I'm guessing 100), so that's the reason I had to separate it. When I try to add more, it provides a link instead of showing the picture.

All the pictures are moved and should work now.

Get dual dream & stack with merc.. you will instantly melt everything. Good luck with build.

A note though: if you want to make playthroughs with quirky builds that dont have much devotion to any damage output, the pre-expansion patches are much better for this. Why? Because the monster life increase is much smaller per act, so act 4 hell monsters have around 1000 hp. And skills in general are balanced around smaller total ED and item bonuses, making an ungeared character better than the current (post 1.10) fucked up "balance" system
Aah thats the stuff..

so i installed diablo, made the freezing arrow amazon, and made it to hell difficulty with minimal deaths.

so now i'm in hell. i'm level 75. i have an ilzan who is also level 75. he's wearing a unique mage plate and has 7k defense. 4 of corpsefire's zombie minions killed him despite my level 23 strafe suppression fire.

i have a zephyr ceremonial bow: damage (28-60). this is pretty much the best thing i could put together after a zillion baal kills in nightmare. is there something i'm missing? why is everything in hell invincible and am i at the end of the road with this character?

What is he using for a weapon? You might also want to upgrade his armor. The Treachery runeword is the ideal (the highest rune is Lem), and there are other upgrades to find. Also, having a valkyrie and decoy out greatly helps Ilzan's survival.

Personally I think multishot is much better than strafe for dealing physical damage over an area. I wouldn't level strafe that high because and it locks you in place and you really need a good bow to make it hit hard. Also keep in mind Zombies have 50% Physical Resist, so you might be better off using your level 1 Guided Arrow against Corpsefire.

Zephyr is really the best bow you could find? Not even a Skystrike? It seems that every time I go through Nightmare, I find a Kuko or Cliffkiller that I leave on the ground. lol

Zephyr is a low-level runeword and ceremonial bow is a nightmare weapon, so that means your damage, especially with strafe, is going to be low. A maxed freezing arrow with maxed cold arrow synergy and +3 skills should hit for at least 900 cold damage per shot. Of course that doesn't help much against a cold immune zombie :C

You'll need to upgrade your bow before you can clear hell easily. I'm not sure what runes you have, but the Harmony runeword is a good bow to make. The highest rune you need to make it is Ko, which you can get from NM Hellforge. You might have to go back and kill NM Andy/Meph/Shenk/Eldritch/Baal until you find enough items so you can kill in Hell. Sticking to only baal might not be the best way to find the items you'll need. You might even want to do NM cows to find some poison charms and others.

Baal's Minions man, they are the nightmare for the most melee characters (not a zealot paladin with Holy Freeze though). I guess that sorceress is the best bet for a melee character against them. What an irony.

You can take Lister with a frenzy barb head on, but that doesn't apply when there are ~25 Baal's Minions around. I spent more than 10 minutes to kill all of them. Lister took less than 1 of these minutes. Rest went to Baal's Minions. Baal was ez as well. Having a Fire Resistance of 85% and level 20 Frenzy definitely helps.

Oh, WW barb kinda sucks against lister. My friend did one and he instead of WW'ing him, just walked back and leap attacked him until he died. He then claimed that it takes less time than WW'ing.

Every time I read an awesome Diablo II blurb/blog/story (or watch someone) I get so disappointed that I never got into the game. Every time I tried I did miserably bad and just couldn't navigate and had no direction. It's always sounded like something right up my alley

Amazing blog though 5/5

Edit: Speaking of which, is this the kind of game that hard binds to a Bnet account now? Or could I borrow it from a friend as long as they aren't playing at the same time or anything etc.? I have had hours of free time daily with nothing to do (it's like >80 degrees in my apt at all hours of the day and I can not play SC2 in this condition. I feel nothing but anger and disappointment lolol) and maybe I'll give it one more shot.

And I assume (from memory) that single player is exactly the same except... No one else around lol. Correct? Obviously there'd be limitations to what I could do without help, esp. as a first timer, but I'd only prefer to play with friends anyway, and they don't play anymore. I could make-do with SP.

meh right now bnet isnt very fun especially for a first timer. its filled with bots and doesnt have alot of people who arent just rushing and leveling on.

single player is nice because you can use the /players (number from 1-8) code to increase the difficulty and thus the exp of the monsters. so if you are stuck before a boss you can speed up the grind abit. also you can use ATMA for muling.

You can also take single player characters on open bnet still right? I know it's full of hackers and cheaters, but if you just want to play with friends then it's great.

My only concern is - how the FUCK do you get so many golds/greens so early on in the game without any MFing gear and a shit-to-start-with build.

IF you really want melee I'm sure you know you want to level enchant warmth and possibly telekinesis.

Unfortunately, right now I'm at a point where the time I spend playing the game to gather material surpasses the actual writing. Believe me, I really would like to write something! But if I wrote something right now it would only be "I found a rare ring and a faster hit recovery charm" and I'm not sure how interesting that would be. lol

For those of you saying you can't go to hell with a Meleesorc or beat the Ancients:

Some people I know did ubertristram in hardcore with a party of naked characters, only wearing broken belts to get the slots for potions, a good melee sorc can do UT solo.

The melee chars stood back and they used lots of buffs for life. It still takes skill, I'm sure. But the survivability offered by +400% life +200%resistall and standing behind fully synergised spells, lower resist and conviction, is significantly greater than that of trying to solo the game with the easiest build untwinked.

You have to be careful to not die in hardcore, but I don't think the players in the iron man were doing anything difficult.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Lol? I was level 45 when I finish normal (I play on p8 and never ever rush. I kill every single monster. I get through cows in p8 too). How can you stay level 40 after finishing normal?

I'm usually in mid-30s when I finish normal if I'm soloing o_O Using far less fragile builds, though.

Sorry if I missed something, but where's max enchant? Isn't that where like 90% of a melee sorc's damage comes from? Not to mention how powerful your merc will get from the skill..

Nightmare Duriel was actually my biggest disappointment. I thought that I would need a shitton of pots, both mana and health. I even had 20ish full juvs with me. I ended up using 4 mana pots and nothing else (Bonemancer with a fire golem, maxed out bone prison anda few revives with me).

Today the journey sadly ends. Hephasto the Armorer exploded and 75% Fire Resist and 50% Energy Shield weren't enough to save me from the massive explosion (which I thought they had fixed!)

Are you playing on the most recent version? Cause it's weird if an FE death can do that with your resistances and hp. Nm you were on bnet so it has to be the latest.

I haven't played D2 in a few years so I don't know how much has changed but there used to be some bugs with FE, at one point it instagibbed, they fixed that, and there was a buggy thing where NM FE monsters did way more than hell FE monsters.

Either way Hephasto has one of the bigger FE death damages of the various bosses who can have it. If I was playing HC I'd probably try to always let my merc take the last hit on FE bosses.

I'm thinking about making a new character, but if I do I won't be purist again. That means I'll probably be making a fireball sorc for speed and respeccing later just because normal is so slow with no melee skills. I might even just "power rush," as some people call it.

Also I have some items I would love to try out, so I might even do melee the whole way again. If I do that there won't be any writing until I get back to a4nm.

Now I feel like doing something similar to this myself... However, I haven't played Diablo II since 1.09 so I know jackshit about all the new runewords, proper stat allocations and itemization in the current patch. Maybe find a friend that's in the know and do a duo hardcore run?

In any case, GG Ghin_Sorc. Rest in shambles.

The hardest part is finding the right gear because you need so many things to not die. It's even harder early on to have enough life to survive and enough strength to wear gear. Use those chipped rubies! If you can survive early on, it becomes easier when Shiver Armor starts kicking in, and much easier when your Telekinesis is maxed and you can start knocking off 30% or 40% off every hit with Energy Shield. You really need to put all your points in Shiver Armor asap for the defense and because the Cold damage slows enemies and therefore reduces their melee damage.

Later on, use lots of Sol runes to reduce the damage you take. You'll see a drastic reduction in your incoming damage. You can use a 4 socket Gothic Plate and a 3 socket helm filled with Sol runes to become literally invulnerable. 7 Sol runes adds up to a whopping Damage Reduced by 49! Most enemies in Nightmare can't even do 50 damage. Baal's Minions of Destruction deal 44-72 damage, and they're the strongest things in Nightmare. Combine that with the 40% from Energy Shield and you can go AFK in front of Lister.

I copied your idea too, and yeah, Bloodraven was a bit of work. Hardest thing I've encountered so far (I didn't play for a few days and am currently at Act 3) were those bugs in the desert with lightning damage. Turned out I got a little to OMG-DAMAGE-ATTACKRATING-happy instead of resistances. But thanks for the further advice =)) I do play only SP though, I'm living with my GF and times with STFU PLAYING GAME CANT PAUSE are more or less over ^^

Totally feel you man. My two most recent hardcore deaths have also been due to the death-throes of fire enchanted monsters. They always take you by surprise, when you're just cruising through Nightmare as your skills are really kicking in, only being careful around the obvious stuff such as act bosses and stygian dolls, and then it all ends with a bang.

That said, the damage fire enchanted bosses can do on nightmare should not be underestimated. According to AS, they can deal up to 11.66% of their base health, which is up to 1190 damage in Hefatso's case, half of which is fire damage and half of which is physical. Other fun stuff such as auras and being cursed may then further up the damage taken...

Bosses in hell difficulty only deal up to 1.25% of their base health worth of damage, which will no doubt result in the average fire enchanted boss appearing to do far less damage than its nightmare difficulty counterpart. Guess it's a necessary evil to prevent instagibs from those few super high health bosses that can be found in hell difficulty.

Like many others I also took up arms again. I started an Amazon - I've never played one in single-player even after all these years. I'll be throwing pointy sticks, doing ye olde hardcore full clear stuff I'm used to. Wonder if I'll get killed by a fire-enchanted boss again. Or by the ancients. At least you don't have to worry about multishot-lightning these days ^^;

Ok please please make new character, make the exact opposite build/character this time:

Instead of a MELEE SORC...

Make a SPELLCASTING BARB!

Make a war cry barb, those are really fun, going to be a challenge of course since you won't have great gear.

War cry barb might not do any direct damage... for the longest time. I don't know, don't want to close out any ideas too early because Ghin obviously is thinking of one himself right now, right right? =)

Personally I'd like to see a sin in action (martial sin or trap sin, I don't care). Phoenix strike (lightning) or a bunch of lightning sentries converging on single target might make some pretty screenshots.
