As I tried to get better at the game, I got more and more into it. I began watching streams (favorite stream is Cruncher's) and reading a ton of posts on TL. The more I got into the game, the higher my aspirations became. I decided that I needed a goal that I would dedicate myself to and thus could measure my own level of improvement.
My goal is this: Get from Bronze league to Diamond league, and then from there, we will see. I plan on updating this blog every so often so that others can see my improvement. If anyone would like to set up a practice match against me, or perhaps coach me, I would greatly appreciate it. I plan on streaming my laddering (starting fairly soon) so that others can give me tips on my play and help me through my journey to Diamond league.
Now, I understand many have said that this is there goal in the past, so to make sure I would stick to this goal, I delayed posting this blog until I had reached silver. Due to a bunch of losses at the beginning of my ladder experiences, this took me a while, but I have finally been promoted to number 1 silver.
Bronze to Silver:
+ Show Spoiler +
At first, bronze league was nothing but frustration. It seemed so hard to win against very non-standard play, early rushes that I had never dealt with, and 1 base all ins. Luckily, at the bronze level these builds aren't exactly executed well, so there is a lot of room for error.
How I improved:
For starters I picked 3 builds (1 for each match up) and I stuck with those, trying to get better at them, looking at their weaknesses, and watching pro's do the same builds. From reading posts on what separates the different leagues from each other, I learned that working on my macro would help the most in terms of improvement. So... all I did was macro macro macro. I focused on holding early pushes, dealing with harass, expanding at certain times, having a strong economy, keeping up with upgrades, and then just maxing my army and attacking. Since most bronze players do not know how to maintain a strong economy, I found that I could just roll over players by simply attacking when I reached 200 supply. Of course, if this didn't work, I usually had enough expansions where I could support about 20 gateways, give or take, and eventually destroy my opponent with an endless supply of warped in units.
So, it took me 102 wins, 63 with Protoss and 39 with Zerg to be promoted to number 1 silver, with ~1100 points.
What I need to work on: I need to work on my scouting. I have become accustomed to the more frequent build, but sometimes I am thrown off by less obvious builds. I have a lot of trouble against 1 base PvT, and my worst match up by far is PvP. I need to keep up with my upgrades, and I need to work on microing while macroing. I also don't know when I should be attacking and when I should be defending. When I attack before I am maxed it usually leads to a loss. Overrall though, I learned that a strong economy means a strong game.
