Hi there,

I was at MLG Columbus and one of the goals of me and a teammate of mine were to observe the Koreans and how they use their keyboards.

One of the most interesting and commonplace things was that all of the Korean players (mma, mc, july, and moon) never touched any of the F keys (the camera location hotkeys) during any of the matches that they played outside of the main stage.

I wanted to ask them (specifically JulyZerg because of his past in Brood War) about it, but I wasn't confident enough in my vocabulary (I was thinking of asking something like "F키들이 사용하지 않은 것 같습니다. 왜?", but I wasn't confident enough that i could get the message across that way because I don't know if they call them "F키"s)

I had the opportunity and time to ask him myself specifically about it the other day in person, but I didn't feel confident enough in my Korean to understand whatever his reason might be (much less repeat it or try to actually put effort into conveying the idea of it to me in case I didn't understand the first time, somehow).

So yeah -- I figure that the next best thing would be to get the opinion of you guys on the matter because I actually would like to know.

I feel like you should have tried! I feel like July would have been nice about it.

I think it depends a lot on race. I find myself using them more as Protoss, less as Terran and not at all as Zerg. Protoss because of the warpgate mechanic, mostly.

the only time i use them is when i play zerg, but i think its inferior to hotkeying all my queens seperatly. i'm just use to F keys but i plan on changing my hotkeys

hmm that sucks because i feel my game has improved a ton since i've started using them.
i now ritually hotkey my main, nat and third as f1-3 respectively at the start of the game and once you get used to it it's soooo good. obviously transferring workers only takes a very small amount of time but even for moving cc's and deflecting harrass it seems like a must to me.
as protoss i use an additional one for my warp in, as zerg they do seem less useful to me.

As zerg, I usually use F keys for my creep spread.

F2-F4 keys for main/nat/3rd is the best thing ever and im glad we could customize it in sc2. together with shift+F1 to select all idle workers and quickly pressing f.e. F2 and sending all the workers to mine is very efficient

i think the main issue is that people who played BW got "lazy", i used to use almost all control groups in BW and in sc2 in the beggining i used to use like 2 control groups for units and some for buildings. even now i use only 3 groups for units even though i'd like to use more (for drops etc) and doing all marine splitting and drops manually which is not "ideal"

I know I should be using them, but I can't get used to it.

As a Protoss player, I did find a good substitute for warp-ins, though. Once you hit W and the hotkey for whatever unit you want to make, obviously your cursor is a ghost of that unit and you can't left click to move around. But you can right click the minimap to move to a location... Same thing with abilities, like chrono. Often I'll be babysitting my army in front of my third, and hit 4 (nexii), C, right click on my natural/main on the minimap, then left click my upgrades to chrono them. This is probably common knowledge, but on the off chance it isn't, it's really useful, albeit less efficient than proper F-key use.

i mapped one of the F keys to a button on the side of my mouse i find this very useful for warp ins,
don't main toss though ;p

Is the assigning just done by pressing Shift+F2 in sc2, etc? I tried it, didn't work
Booted up BW, it worked there (I had heard about this function key methods, but had never bothered to look up on it, so was just trialling)

I've actually improved my game quite a lot by changing Backspace to Space, F1-F4 to the camera keys, and then spending a week to get used to it.

basically because they no longer need to, the interface allows them more than enough hotkey options than what once was.

I believe only F5+ count as camera keys by default in SC2. You have to manually change you hotkey setup if you want F1-F4 to be used that way. Don't forget to change the assign keys as well (Shift+F1-F4).

If you want shift-F2 to work you actually have to remap the keys to that. By default the keys are F8 F9 F10 etc way on the right

to clarify: the keys are F5 6 7 and 8 and you have to us CONTROL + F5 to assign just like a hotkey for units/buildings.

yes, looked over the keys in the menu
you can also ctrl_shift + f5 to access more, its recalled by pressing shift f5
but thats too much hassle

i don't think i've ever used f keys in sc2. the only time i used them in broodwar was to rally a bunch of rax/facts really fast.

I tried going for using F keys but with my laptop computer, it's kinda hard getting used to it as my number keys are the easiest keys for me to access and I just bind my hatcheries on there. Two for my econ, and the other two for my units.

Here to kick ass....with Violence. And I got a blog site: http://nemesistrestkon.wordpress.com

Didn't Blizzard actually remove them for a bit? Then I came to realize that they were actually still there or maybe they added them back and so I just rehotkeyed them to F2-5 since the normal CTRL F5 is pretty retarded. Anyway, it seems like most notable players that stream don't use the F keys, so maybe they don't know about them? Enlighten me if you will, thanks <3

They were always f5-f8 but nobody used those. Now that it is possible to re-bind to f2-f4 like in BW, it becomes more practical to use them. However, the reason most people used them was to control production buildings and rally point, which is not an issue now that you can select mutiple buildings.

lol a bit off topic, but at first I thought you were talking about the "F" key..

Anyways, really, I think players don't use their F keys, because they're too far away from the actual keyboard. Most normal keyboards, there's a small gap between the numbers and the F Keys, that it takes too much time to actually move your hand there and back to your regular position. Anyways, that's just my 5 cents on it.

As a Zerg player i only really use F Keys to help with creep spread and to jump too opponents mineral lines if i have a Overlords hanging by. Saves me waisting groups on overlords.
I have all hatch on 4 and queens running up from 5-7(8)

Would have been great too hear one of the Korean Zergs take on it

I have them set F1-F4 but I really only use F1 and F2 (my main and natural bases mostly.)
