This may not be so relevant, but I thought I should write it anyway just to get it off my chest:
I have been watching my share of Black Ops commentaries after like 6 months of unsubscribing to Machinima Respawn after they spam my subscription section with the same game commentaries over and over again. And I find none of them informative nor entertaining in the least. Playing the said shooter might be entertaining, but I hardly feel the same thing watching other people do it unless it was in some form of live stream or something.
I mean, it's the same thing with most commentators, they say what map they are playing, what perks they use, and made a random VLOG about things that are just plain irrelevant. I could be wrong on that though as they might be actual commentaries out there that I actually like. But still, it's hard to find with all the constant commentaries I see.
There is nothing to talk about in black ops pub stomps. Theres no strategy or anything, basically you hang around an area of the map and shoot fast. Thats why theres the 10 seconds at the start where they say the map and perks, and vlog. if they actually casted objective based arranged team vs arranged team games, there would be more to talk about.
guess you were not around at that time when redeye was doing the clanbase euro/opencups for ut2k3/2k4 ictf try a search for the legendary inmind vs genesis of a new alliance final match. something i had the chance to withness live.

MLG thinks differently...... they have neither. Instead have CoD and Halo
What's MLG got to do with esports?
Either way. FPS commentary can be enjoyable, but it's somewhat harder to find a good commentator than in strategy games. Try searching for 2GD commentating on Quake or CS. He's a lot better on Quake though. Thorin does a fair job on CS. But it's always best to have an actual progamer there, since otherwise there's a high chance of listening to someone that doesn't know anything about the game at all and while he does a good job of describing of what's happening, that's not what you want to hear.

Imo, Quake > UT is mainly because the Quake movement system is so much better. Plus UT has some really gay weapons.
I have to agree with most people here, when I saw the title I was just, "Quake commentaries are pretty good" but I see alot of people have already said the same thing

I dunno. What I like about UT was that it had more variety. Quake as I recall just had Deathmatch under it's belt

Which is why I don't take MLG seriously. CoD over quake ? Come on ..
I'm with you, just pointing out that in NA for some reason people go ape for what in EU are considered "Casual" games. Quake is the only FPS i still play. I gave up on CS because i sucked and couldn't find a good team of friends to actually get good with lol.

You have to think of it in a business perspective. How many people are going to tune in to watch Black Ops? How many people are going to tune in to watch Quake? The number for Black Ops is most certainly higher than Quake.
CS1.6 is the only shooter worthy of commentary IMO, and even then it sucked most of the time. It had enough mind games and strategy/tactics to talk about it - obviously it doesn't compare to RTS, but yeah.
That Quake commentary was really good. I knew quake was deep.. (I play it... terribly I might add) but I didn't realise how much of a level they thought above. The timings, positioning. Being accurate is barely even an issue, but I guess at the top levels everyone is accurate so it's about other things and mind games that set you apart.
Halo commentaries, or at least back during Halo 1-2 were good. haven't really followed the scene since Halo 3 came out to know if it's changed. MLG is more for console gaming that PC gaming however. Other than something like WCG no gaming organisation caters for everything. EVO for fighters, MLG for consoles etc.. SC2 being at MLG is an anomaly, not the norm.
yea that quake video posted here was amazing. I used to play quakeworld a lot at lans and stuff and some online as well before I started playing only bw.. played some games with some of the best players in norway (and at that time at least, europe) and they'd just confine me to one area and dominate me, but it's really amazing how much thought goes into the process of doing so. and although accuracy is hardly an issue, a couple of the rails that the guy commenting were hit by were soo perfect, just aiming to rail out in thin air because you know that's the precise fraction of a second the guy is going to jump exactly there..
quake has always been my fps favourite, this video really confirmed it for me.
Ah, Quake. Not been able to play it for a long time now. The only game I got that is close to Quake is fucking Deatmatch Classic, which came free with my CS 1.6

This.
When I think of esports I think of three games: Starcraft, Quake, and Street Fighter.
Thats true to an extent I mean, CS has a longer streak of popularity, and a duel FPS and team FPS are almost two different genres. Starcraft is definitely THE RTS, SF is THE fighting game, even though everyone plays every game from guilty gear to marvel vs capcom etc. but Quake is definitely THE duel FPS and CS 1.6 is THE team FPS.

I personally preferred ut's movement system, just because it let me dodge off walls and stuff. Quake movement always seemed to me more about moving between powerups and less about dodging stuff.
i think fps commentary is boring because the camera still sucks.
i guess quake 1v1 would be different because you only really need two perspectives, but most team games really need better camera work in order to enjoy viewing it and for most commentators to really grasp what's going on.
i played Quake for 4 years and when someone told me to check that video in the first page, i though i will only see it for the gameplay and the commentators would probably just shout how many frags each player has.
But man, that video changed my mind about FPS commentary, is really a great video
So, i urge everybody to see that video. is a must.

Yep, that's the way it is, Halo, CoD etc were never really important. Years ago, I remember seeing Starcraft, Warcraft and CS 1.6 on TV(Starcraft got replaced by FIFA later). Occasionally, they broadcasted DotA, Quake 3, sometimes UT2k4 and pretty much never CoD 2(CoD 4 wasn't released at that point).

Can someone tell me where the complexity is in competitive FPS? I watched a commentary of a recent Halo game in MLG (apparently a really epic game that ended 50-49. It was game 5 of the series. Final Boss was one of the teams).
Anyways, it was cool and all, but it seems like all of the strategy is just dodging bullets and getting headshots. I didn't see any real strategic depth.

Halo tends to just be 4 guys all yelling at each other to give the illusion of communication but for the most part they don't set up well for a team shooter. In CS there is a ton of locking down different entry points and swinging around for defense, which then leads to mind games on late rush strats or delays, etc. The strategy involved in CS also comes from predicting money and buy rounds, semi buys, deagles, or eco-rounds from the opponent so that youc an set up how you save your money and take control of the rounds. None of that happens in halo either.
The problem with Q3/QL is that they are slow games. Hence while the tactical aspects can be discussed, the casting opportunities are much more limited, as there is not much things going on. Compared to QW, for example:
I enjoy playing Black ops, but I like the watching Halo more for some reason. It's harder to broadcast FPSs because you don't get that overall view so stuff is always happening that you are missing out on. If a game was made with broadcasting in mind it would be way more fun to watch.
