Hello to everyone,

I've just started playing Starcraft II recently... never really played RTSs before, other than Age of Empire II (and I sucked at it too, as far as I remember.... lol)

So, I'm advancing in single game, but I'm interested in start playing on multiplayer.

Right now, I've seen several Day9 videos, and I've been playing against the AI (medium), always losing by some margin. I already use some hotkeys and some group controls, but I'm not yet able to keep my attention in all the relevant aspects of macro and micro... in fact, specially micro.

Said that, I'd like to know what do u guys think it's the best choice regarding training... should I play against an easier AI? Or start playing practice matches against real players? Should I play on a slower speed? Or keep the faster one?

Any help is appreciated.

TIA.

Parx.

Medium AI is pretty bad already ><"

Just mass game and you'll get the hang of it. Soon you'll be able to beat AIs easily. Then I guess move to play other people.

Play on faster speed as it's the speed everyone uses.

I'd say the thing that helped me most when I was lower-level was following a set build order. Try that out.

The most important thing to get down when you're just starting is your macro (micro isn't too important until you're in diamond/masters). Constantly produce workers/units, keep your units low and remember to build overlords/pylons/supply depots. Also, get a solid build order that isn't cheese and just practice that over and over.

Good luck! You can add me on Starcraft if you have some questions, I'll help you if you can.

Find some pro replays (the ones from MLG would be good) and see the kind of builds and hotkey setup's they use and try to replicate that to the best of your ability. I'd suggest finding 1 build order per match up and practicing it against the very easy AI until you feel comfortable enough with it to take it on the ladder.

Don't worry about micro, you don't need it right now. Focus solely on macro. macro macro macro. It's way more important.

Finally, don;t be afraid to ladder! A lot of new players say they have some kind of fear of laddering, just do it and you'll never look back ^_^

go and play some players and have fun, no shame in being in bronze and you will find PLENTY of people your skill level to play against! As long as you work actively on your strategy and mechanics you will become better in no time.

I really appreciate all the advice, folks.

One of them, that I'm trying to follow but thats just hard to accomplish right now, is always produce workers/units (and, as a result, keep money low) (as protoss, btw).

The fact is that I continuously produce workers, but after the 5:00 or 6:00 mark my minerals skyrocket, and I start losing control of things... then, I really can't answer myself these questions: should I stop making workers at this point and spend the resources (for example, building even more Gateways)? Or the workers interruption will affect me later on?

Any advices on that specific topic?

Other than that, I really thank all of you guys for the support!

When you see your minerals spiraling you need to make more gates/tech, constantly producing _anything_ but what i think most people forget is about having a gameplan. What are you going to do this game? Usually when the loadingscreen hits or before i search for a match i just say to myself, "Im so going blinkstalkers and immortals this game", it helps alot just having a goal to follow.

Not to say that you shouldnt react to what your opponent is doing, that is still the point of the game.
Beating AI isnt very hard when you get the hang of some simple macro, you can usually win with just a handful of units.

Keep practicing! (And dont worry about micro very much, positioning and timings are much more important than controlling the units themselves.)

I thank all of you that kindly answered some of my questions so far!

It's amazing the quantity (and the quality) of the information available not only here, but in many sites devoted to SC2. In fact, it seems I'll need some hundreds of games to get used to the basic stuff... lol. I think I'll track how many battle till I win a game against the medium AI...

I've never imagined that RTSs were so full of details and strategies like those available for Starcraft! XD

A lot of things can make your resources go up, forgetting to make units out of your structures, supply blocks, etc. Prevent those things. Another thing to learn is how many unit-producing structures you can produce off of with the amount of income you have.

-Don't get supply blocked
-Make units constantly (while avoiding queuing)
-Make enough structures

Just want to give a quick update... I finally won 3 games against the AI!!! One against each race.

In all of them I played as protoss, and used Zealot rush, coupled with some Immortals, if necessary.

I can be wrong, but the AI seems not very prepared for a rush (unless if it's zerg, and in that case I had to be as fast as I can to prevent a counter attack).

Anyway, in two of the games that I lost, my minerals were depleted before I could establish an expansion, and I couldnt advance further... seems I have to pay attention in that neglected aspect also... XD
