Taking On the BW Beginners - Is this Reasonable?

In the last few months we have had a fair number of people coming from SC2 and either switching to or trying out BW as well as just other new people coming to the game.

I'd be interested in getting involved with these people and giving general coaching and advice, as most of them do seem to have interest in getting some help/advice from players.

My question to you is can a D+ player reasonably do this or do you need to be alot more knowledgeable or better than that. It seems like it might be reasonable since most new players just need to be taught builds, get some advice on macro/army control, and get the chance to play against typical styles and timings. For players of this level it seems like most of the advice players will need is the regurgitated standard stuff that any D or C player can spit back at you like 8 pylon 10 gate 11 gas 13 core.

Is this something that I can reasonably undertake or would something like this need to be left to the higher ranked more experienced players?

Just yell at them as they forget to make workers and let their supplies get high. You can definitely help them.

Are you better than them? If so, then you can teach them. After they become better than you, they can simply dump you and find someone better. lol

If you know what you are doing you can easily teach while playing at a d+ level.

I was actually considering doing some BW Coaching because I was totally bored but I figured no one would want to take me up on that offer.

D+ sounds bad, but it's actually pretty good. If they don't like your method of training or whatever they can just go to one of the ICCup training teams or mass game.

I'd say go for it, I mean, there's so many basic things from not getting supply blocked to whatever that can be taught without high-level knowledge, and every bit of encouragement towards the newcomers helps I think.

There's been quite a few threads of people asking for help, but I actually never see any of them around (then again, I play at a different timezone).

We should write a liquidpedia article on "differences between sc2 and bw".

I would say D+ is alright to give advice on your own race, but then again, you can make some pretty bad mistakes even at that level (forgetting stasis).

Exactly what I was about to say. Nothing bad can come of this, regardless if it turns out you are only a little helpful. Even if you teach them something wrong, it is probably more right than what they were doing before.

D+ is High diamond / master level in Sc2. It is more than enough to teach E level beginners.

E to d+ is a huge step, especially when we're talking about iccup levels.

Going from even masters in sc2 to playing bw would be a bit of a rude awakening I'd imagine. The stuff you have to do to produce the same response from your units/structures is so much greater in bw than in sc2, ie it's easier to create your "story" in sc2 than it is in bw.

guys! go down that ramp!
sc2- units go down ramp
bw- units don't necessarily go down ramp

macro!
sc2- 2dddddddddaaaa
bw- f2 click m click m click m click m click m click c click c

not to mention stuff you take for granted in sc2 like rallying workers to minerals/ rallying multiple unit producing structures.

I only played bw while sc2 was in its beta to get ready but I definitely have great respect for players who were able to master bw at a very high level of mechanics.

Players complaining about SC2 macro need to try macroing perfectly for the first 5 minutes of a BW game, let alone in an endgame situation in BW. Blizzard still needs to take out multiple building selection, it makes macro sooo boring and easy compared to BW.
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

As long as you can teach them the basics that's fine.

I think what most people need most in teaching is someone who can remind them what they need to be doing.

Well, I'm not saying mbs is BAD, just entirely different. I think everyone transferring from BW to SC2 was very well aware of the fact that the game is much less demanding mechanically and probably why you see so many new faces. Is that a bad thing? We really cannot know yet.

D+ is absolutely miles ahead of an E/D-/D player. Any new player to the game will benefit greatly from a D+ player's teachings, as long as the D+ player realizes his limits and doesn't try to teach things he really doesn't know.

I am a long time player, but wrist problems have affected me too much plus inactivity put really behind.I'm Terran and I'm right now going for a fresh start so D,but anyways my highest was only D+.

I thrive on my knowledge of the game.

This is a commendable initiative. I see you didn't mention anything about paying, but I hope you mean you would do it for free -.-

Anyways, I hope this takes off!

Can I help too? I already help some players that occasionaly post that they are just starting BW and I think a group coaching initive would be great. I mean, a mid D player can even help a complete beginner a lot.

If you just stick to teaching them only the very basics its ok i guess. Low money + worker production + tight build orders.
