How do you motivate yourself?

Recently I've gone through a slump. I'm slacking. I don't want to do the things I need to do. I can't find the inspiration inside myself to be a better person. I need to lose a little weight- I've been eating like crap. I can't keep that up, but I can't motivate myself to do better. I've been lazy with my schoolwork as well. I know I need to do things, but I get lazy, especially when I don't eat well.

What do you do for motivation?

For me it helped motivate me to start running and stick with it; I think you will find you are able to keep up on something like that it becomes easier to be motivated and proactive about many other things in life.

Always look at the big picture. If you find you are not motivated, analyze your current situation as objectively as you can.

What can you do right now that will improve how you feel later? Remember, long term investment activities such as studying, exercise, sleeping enough, and even practicing an instrument will make you feel a lot better about yourself. And doing them regularly and honoring portions of your day to them is an important step.

But when do you stop sacrificing. I feel like I've been hearing this all my life but when do you know when later is? It's not like when we get into our mid 40's we simply stop caring about being ambitious. Maybe I'm simply too young to understand at 21.

I feel you OP. This is exactly what's going on right now to your truly T_T it's uncanny.

I really don't think students be concerned with their weight. For instance Day9 got huge in the stressful time between starcraft and inventing combinatorics.

Personally, I got in shape by blasting great music and killing myself 5 minutes at a time a few times daily.

It's not so much my weight that concerns me, it's my eating habits. I strive to be better- that's just the way I am. When I eat well, I don't care about my weight, but when I don't, it brings me down.

Get a friend to help you with it. On my own, I can barely even get myself to walk 10 feet. But I started working out with a friend, and it makes it almost easy to go 3-4 days a week. You guys keep each other accountable, and you feel weak if you don't do it.

duude. man. if your mentality shifts that much depending on what you ate, then I would just always eat well and be content ^___^

or not, and intently shift your entire focus to something unrelated and involving, burying the desire to eat deep within yourself until it smothers out.

People become motivated when they feel like what they are doing is related to their desires.

Maybe you don't really care about school work? Maybe you aren't properly connecting it to what you want in life? Maybe you're trying to walk in someone elses' shoes instead of making a path toward what you need in life?

Do you care if you are 'in shape?' The answer is obviously not enough, since you aren't motivated. Maybe if you meet a girl you like you'll suddenly start wanting to look good for her (or him, if that's your preference).

There's nothing I do for motivation. I am just a passionate person who has found a few things he cares about. The motivation comes from caring about the result. That's all.

I want to be a doctor, and when I lose motivation, I just think about how awesome it'd be when I got there. That really gets me back in the game. So try and look at your end goal, remember what you're trying to get to. Maybe do a before after pic, track your progress. I also break goals into manageable chunks so I can celebrate small victories. Take whatever you can get.
How's the weather down there?

realizing that you are in need of change enough to make a post is a good start. I was 225 4 months or so ago and now i'm down to 190. Make some specific goals tell your friends or family what you are doing and maybe even post about it.(will motivate you to not give up because you will want to keep your word).

heres some stuff I did:
Check out the tl fitness initiative for some pointers
get nike + and start running at least 3 times a week
start making small changes to your diet - like cut out pop completely
weigh yourself every day and write it down to track your progress.

as for other things, being healthy will give you more exercise and motivation for everything else.

glhf!

I like that second part. Maybe I'll just absorb myself in guitar. But then I have to get my work done first. Which is part of my problem. Hmmm.

Must, escape, apathy! CAN'T ESTABLISH ESCAPE VELOCITY FROM THE BLACK WHOLE THAT IS CONSUMING MY LIFE! Fast food is definitely depressing. It's bad for you, you gain weigh, and spend a decent chunk of money. Home cooked for is usually healthier(depending on you), cheaper, and you get a sense of accomplishment. Now if only I could cook all the time and find the courage to hit find match my self esteem will SKY ROCKET!

Realize the great opportunity you are given and how great of a position you are in compared to most people and don't waste it for the people who would kill to be where you are. All the opportunities for education and sports are such blessings and it feels terrible to not try your hardest. Being lazy is just a part of being human; we are afraid to do things that will be hard so we take the easy way out naturally. It's one of the hardest tasks to overcome this tendency.

I find that I'm a lot more motivated if I set aside blocks of time for various things. For instance, I'll leave 2 hours to do a specific homework assignment or something and then whatever time is left is mine to do whatever. And of course having a hobby helps lots too.

But that's just me. I know different people have different ways to manage time and organize things.

Just think about the results. Picture the results that you'll get when you actually do it. For example: when you don't want to do your hw, just imagine all the free time you'll have when u're done.
Imagination is everything.

Here are some articles that go in depth into some of the techniques already described by other posters:

Setting aside blocks of time:

http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2004/10/timeboxing/

Visualising:

http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2009/11/how-to-visualize-your-new-reality/

Transcending the problem:

http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2010/06/how-to-fall-in-love-with-procrastination/

Hopefully they're useful to you: I found the site, if not those particular articles, very useful for me. Helped bring me out of depression about two years ago.
<@Wikt> so you are one of those nega-fans <@Wikt> that hates the company that makes a game and everything they stand for <@Wikt> but still plays the game <@Wikt> (like roughly 30% of blizzard's player base, maybe much more...)

When I met a girl I really liked and got to know her, I learned how many shitty guys she's been through. I wanted to be this superstar, all-around guy for her. I can't imagine anyone else, I don't meet a lot of people, can count female friends on my fingers, very antisocial as well. I've quit games for a while now and study ways to better my resume and become desirable. In my free time, I just study or do important extracurriculars.

Right now I'm 18 and prepping for a job interview for Walmart. I got really lucky on this one but the fight's not over. I plan to tell her my feelings in a week or two in person (not same school or city). Not those small guys at the cashier, but a position at Canada's head office.

Might sound pretty disgusting but that's how I got part of my motivation. I just want to be this hardworking guy who gets somewhere and finds happiness.

i've been somewhat depressed for most of my life even though i'm not supposed to (better off than a lot of people around the world). i get jealous a lot of the times (my mother died when i was 9, it's hard to look at friends' mothers), fantasize a lot about women (never had a girlfriend), and cry a lot

You have to be doing what you love to do. If you're not emotionally involved with an idea (Meaning its programmed in your subconscious mind) you're not going to be persistent. And if you do force the persistence it either won't last very long or you will become miserable. Find an idea that you would trade your life for, and go after that...not what you think someone else thinks you should do.

For me, it's to get the right amount of sleep every night. When I don't sleep right, I don't eat right and then everything else just falls apart from there.
