I was just having an nostalgia-trip and re-watching really early Day[9] episodes and my god those Gateway units kicks ass!

After playing SC2 for almost a year now (including Beta) I've got an different feel for the units, but suddenly I remembered how the same units felt in BW...

awww... those +1 Speedlots! it's such a awesome sight to see them run up to enemy units and smash them to the ground! Your question was rather I wonder how many kills or friggin bases I can take out with pure Zealots. In SC2 a Zealot doing damage before dying is a good warrior of Aiur. Their job is to keep opponent occupied so other units try to do some damage... I also have forgot how much damage 1 single storm could do... and the Archons... those beautiful glowing balls of destruction... they felt like pissed off demons spawned from Protoss hell ready to slaughter anything that dared to oppose them!

The only toss-unit I feel has improved is the Dragoon/Stalker, don't get me wrong I still get the feeling of them being made of glass and pew pew like X-wings trying to kill a Death star... (you get there eventually...) but then I remember how much hardware I've broken over Dragoon AI... A stalker really is adaptive, smooth and responsive. It's fun to control a group of Stalkers. Goons was just frustrating...

I also really miss how you almost could harass someone to death in BW. Corsair/Reaver was such fun, challenging and rewarding strategy, or good old templar drop and kill the entire mineral-line with with 2 storms tactics. Those plays that could make the most unlikely comebacks. It feels really repetitively now a days, build your AEO of doom and protect them with an nice meat-shield... if you loose your army you will die.

I know it's a new game and I really think SC2 is close to balanced (after 6 months!!!), I really think SC2 is good and I have a lot of fun! But for how long?
As a old gamer playing the Proud warriors from Aiur since -98 I sometimes really miss the feeling of especially Protoss-units (gateway-units in specific) to be expensive but damn powerful, plowing their way through enemy armies, making your opponent sweat over how much resources they have to waste too survive...

My question is to the old gamers out there: Do you like the general feel of your race in SC2? Am I being really conservative and narrow-minded?

The problem that I have with SC 2 Protoss is:
stalker uses laser guns
phoenix uses laser guns
sentry uses laser beam
colossus uses laser beam
void ray uses laser beam
mothership uses laser beam/guns.
immortal uses some sort of laser gun

I mean, I can understand Terran being limited to machine guns, missiles, and artilery, but Protoss got to be more interesting and diverse than this laser gun peong peong.

It really is too true.

I still play P in both but by both I mean... the only true Protoss is in BW.

AS a terran player I always thought storm drops were imba. There's not much risk involved and the damage is brutal.

Terran here and no, Terran in SCII does not feel like terran in BW T__T

The tanks in SCII are like toys, pew pew, not like the *BOOM* of the tank in SCII. The kiddy marines with their infinite fire rate guns and the marauder, who shoots bouncy balls at the enemy. SCII just feels so different, in comparison to BW. In BW you can actually attach to a unit, the sound quality is better, and it just makes you feel better when you know, that the enemy units will die, and that you will live (Blue goop mwahahahaha)

I just think Brood War is a better game. Yea dragoons were really fucking stupid, but disarming mines with them was badass. Also, you actually had to worry about your probeline and shuttles because of lurkers and scourge along with vultures. and of course carriers ARE NOT THE SAME, I miss microing those things over cliffs and slowly taking out terran.



SC2 is overly competitive .... I never cared too much about winning or losing on BW, because the experience is fun and there would be tons of funny moments during the game.
Brood War was fun because of the chat channels, hanging out w/ random people and playing obs games was a really fun thing to do.
Also Race wars and 4v4 BGH was amazing. The same thing can't be duplicated in SC2 with people leaving at the start of the game for ACHIEVEMENTS of all things.

Now SC2 is just like, go onto ladder, do the same strategy you always do, win/lose, repeat.
Of course i'm exaggerating this , but you get what I mean.

IMO all the SC2 Terran units look like toys (besides... marines I guess...).

I don't mind the Lasers I just prefer the Scarabs
Well, I mean ALL units in BW is BAD-ASS!!!... from the manly punch-you-in the-face Zealots to friggin shuttle-riding bomb-droping Centipedes! In SC2 we got these World of war robots or warp-in-never-ending-storms that's so damn imbalanced that all other units have to be weak to compensate... I dunno... It just feel defensive, slow and weak, barely force fielding myself alive until suddenly ta-da! here comes my gimmicky laser-swinging super-unit to save the day! Also, it really, really, really don't seems fair, sure we got lasers and warp-in but wtf I pay a goddamn fortune for my regular warriors that's so slow it makes the enemy laugh and start sing on old MC Hammers "na, nana na can't touch this" while my ranged fighters trying tickle cheaper enemy-units to death... I guess my units don't feel cool any more... they just feels... um... I dunno... expensive and futile....
Did I mention that the enemy now either kill whole armies by acid explosions or have friggin grenade launchers for hands? that my friends, feels bad ass!

Protoss feels completely different now.

They've becomes far more strategic in composition, and more tactical in engagements. Their reliance on spells has become paramount to the point where you literally cannot function without support troops. They now benefit from unit compositions, rather than positions and power.

A far-cry from the days of of yore; being the proud and hardy warriors of Aiur who would bravely storm tanks lines protected by vulture mines and take horrendous losses, just for the honour of homeworld.

I don't miss old protoss too much (I was a Zerg player in BW) but I do miss zealots being manly as all fuck...they're just not the same now. Protoss is just flimsier and more strategic, and less MAN. But, w/e, life?

All the races have been watered down a lot:

Protoss: The manly zealots, the dragoons, arbiters, reavers, the seriously bad-ass archon, reavers, even shuttles looked so great, and the corsair was just such a great air-unit, but mainly, protoss were just such a bad-asses overall.

Terran: The terran had just such a feeling off "we have fought countless wars, but were still here and going, and it's time to kick those aliens of our planet"
Just from how MM felt, goliaths/valks their missile animation, and just the whole feel off the race.
Now everything just feels so watered down, not only because of the units (okay I know thor's are funny, with their arnold thing, but it contributes to a less "serious" race), and how everything looks, everything just looks like terrans have become metrosexual.

Zerg: from this really fast deadly race with things as lurkers/defilers who were just so great, to this "oh I guess we need a dragoon equivalent" and hydra's taking a back-role, it just doesn't feel the same.


And this whole colossus/viking/corruptor thing just stays stupid, oh you are making colossi, guess I just make that unit. It's the epitome of this rock/paper/scissors stuff in sc2.

I just really liked how reavers could be so insanely deadly, but you had to put them in shuttles, have good micro, and then when a shuttle got scourged, those small moments like that were just awesome, and kept you at the edge of your seat.

Now it's just "oh okay, those 6 vikings 2 shot a colossus, guess that's great"

Big battles had just tons of all this little stuff going on that made it very interesting to watch (and with the graphics it's actually very clear what's happening).
Or hydra's vs storm, marines vs colossi.
or zaelots charging in on tanks, dragging mines along, carpet storms over the tanks, while arbiters are trying to stasis tanks, etc

even to these days in the later stages of the game it's still 2 big balls just colliding with each other, and there is not to much interesting there, just waiting to see who's coming ahead.

The more interesting things are marines vs blings, but even then it doesn't hold up against any other fight in bw

Not that I hate sc2, I enjoy it, but there are just so much great things that have been lost in the transition from bw to sc2 wich we will probably never get back (I am still hoping for some really interesting/good units to be added in the expansions)

Have you ever watched a replay from the terran point of view against 2 hatch muta?
Shit is terrifying man. The random flashes of wings in the fog of war, the projectiles suddenly shooting at you and the ricochet sound.. marines frantically running around trying to defend, turrets only being useful for being on fire and/or exploding..

I miss BW muta micro soooo much :'(

I miss the blue goo of the Dragoon the most. Everything in SC2 doesn't die in an overly dramatic fashion. Marines also don't EXPLODE with their body parts flying everywhere, and Zerglings don't leave huge pools of blood. I guess it's unavoidable with the modern graphics upgrade, but I miss me that blue goo.

Two things I really miss that I would have never thought would be a problem are death animations and sounds. The sounds in SC were so distinct and powerful. Zealots sounded like they were tearing through whatever they were attacking. Now they sound like they're merely slashing it. :/
Lings, too, went from clawing the shit out of their targets to like... poking them.

And death animations + death sounds were great. The blue goo, the ling guts or the hydra flesh... I want my SC gore back. T_T

I forgot how friggen awesome SC was. I recently rewatched some SC games and it made me sad that it's all over.
