I miss the illusion of skill that used to exist. A couple of days ago, a friend wanted to play me in SC2 and said you would probably bash me but I want to play you anyways'm. Afterall, losing is learning.
For some reason, that got me thinking...I miss the illusion of skill! I miss noobs in bw thinking they are the shit with really good records on battlenet. I miss the kids who played zerg cuz scourges are op, I miss the kids that think scouts and carriers are ultimate (scouts beat scourge and carriers own) and I miss the kids who have 1 base timing attacks that can't even scathe 3 hatch before pool...and so forth.
I miss destroying cocky bastards.
Because of the league system, no one terrible thinks their good and they have to be at least half decent to think they are good...its actually quite interesting what the league system gets you to think as I think many people find it enoyable that they think they are at the top of the pack etc.
On a side note, at least I can still enoy dominating the all oobers level 100 team with level 1 pokemon and a legitly trained team...as most pokemon trainers simply choose good pokemon and have no idea about what to do with them. Real teams with "useless" moves that don't do damage ftw. (And think they are good since they dominate the elite four)
Yay illusion of skill!

Just go play some games like 3v3 and troll everyone until someone challenges you to a 1v1 because they think they are hot shit being Platinum rank 1. Or play some UMS like Phantom or other melee-esque games. Troll on but make sure you're prepared to defend yourself^^
|
But they know they aren't the best. Even diamond 1 players never think they are the best cuz they got thre learnibng from TL and hence know about the pro scene.
Also they can check your profiile and immediately know how good you are. I miss when people thought they were the best and had ultimate strategies...

There still is, lots of 2700+ diamonds with 2k+ games think they are good, but they are actually very bad.
|
Yeah, that must suck not having that illusion anymore. It was so much fun going up to people who thought they were hot shit in the computer labs and raping face. I'm with you, but at least now people don't get matched against others of equal skill. Progress always has its tradeoffs.

play FPS
you'll find plenty of people that think they are better than they really are

I was at my friend's place visiting for a few days since he lives kind of far away and he's leaving for the military soon, and we were 3v3ing with another friend as well. They're both silver, and after one of our games someone on the other team started shittalking my friend. He's kind of a troll himself so he started shittalking back, then the guy messaged him after the game and challenged him to a 1v1.
The guy was platinum so my friend didn't want to play him, but since we were all in the same room, he came up with the idea to have me play for him on his account to beat the guy. After absolutely destroying him he completely shut up, didn't say another word, and logged off. It was awesome.

I'd like you to introduce to a group that classifies themselves as "Mid to high" diamond. The ladder is so inflated that 2000+ is pretty standard now but there are some people that think they are the hot sauce because they can break high 2000's.

Bad people don't think they're good in SC2? That's absolutely false. Most people on the ladder are awful.
|
ever see those posts where it starts with "Hi, 2000 diamond <insert race> here..." or "nerf maruders, btw i'm a silver player"? 2000 diamond is still pretty shitty nowadays but people think they're good because they were only 1000 diamond a month ago.
If you want to play a game where everyone thinks they're god/better than everyone else, you should play LoL/Dota/HoN. Basically everyone complains about their teamates and tells everyone what to do even though they are not that great themselves.

I think there still is an illusion of skill. At least once a week there's a post on the SC2 forums about "when will I be promoted? I just won 10 games straight I am owning", when in reality they're just above 50%.. maybe it's not an illusion of skill as much as a lack of understanding. There are two types of players that I can stereotype well - the bronze league player who has had little or no exposure to the thought process behind high-level play (these are the guys who argue that you don't need high APM, etc), and the 2000+ point diamond league player who thinks he has the game figured out (the guys who whined about phoenixes and void rays being weak in beta before NonY and WhiteRa popularized them)
And then there's the SC2 Strategy forums.
|
No, it's still there... most of the people outside of TL or other SCII forums excluding battle.net seem to think that being in Platinum means you have 80% the skill of a pro, and that being in Diamond means you are essentially as good as a pro player (just not having dedicated enough time to be at the top of the ladder). At least this is true for the people I've met IRL who play SCII.
There are horribly misled people out there :/

I absolutely agree. I recently had a period lasting a couple weeks where I was totally stoned allll the time and it was pretty awesome, but I couldn't make myself play any 1v1 sc2 at all. it's just not any fun to play ladder when I just feel like smashing some faces and rape some egos - I'm constantly matched against someone who is close to my actual skill when I am sober and thus I'm just gonna lose when I'm not.
if this had been starcraft, I could've made a smurf nick and gone to op tot) and been like yo waddap fuckers i'll rape any one of you, and the guys that would respond would be the ones that weren't actually good but that thought they actually were better than the random morons that talked random trash, thus I'd get my fix of insulting people for no particular reason other than that it's pretty damn funny. now, can I honestly blame blizzard for taking some of the fun out of using illicit drugs while playing their games so I can make the gaming experience less enjoyable for the other guys playing their games? not really - but blizzard should realize that much of the success of their other chief franchise - WOW - stems from exactly this segment of the population.
that being said, I'd probably have twice if not three times more 1v1 games played if I could make different accounts. it's not fun to have to constantly play the same race or to constantly have to perform at my highest level and to constantly have to play against good players, and this ladder somewhat forces all three of those.
|
ditto that, I wish there was an easier way to play offraces and just mess around but try those things on your main ladder account you just get smashed

This is a problem i've faced also. I never feel like I can just pop online for a fun game or two, let alone go online while using illicit drugs and bruise some egos as you say.. Unless I dare braving the 3v3 and 4v4 leagues, which is simply never as satisfying as a face to face encounter. To say nothing of the danger of losing because your allies all decide to "rush thors/voids/broodlords".
Truly, where is the avenue for playing while yelling "kekekeke"?

funny story from something like 9-10 years ago in starcraft that illustrates what I loved though
basically you had a hierarchy of teams. on the top you had the actual good teams. below these teams you had the bad teams that thought they were good. mostly everyone in these teams had a strong tendency to be total fuckwads. below these teams you had teams that consisted of horrible players that barely played, but that were generally nice guys. I was one of those players that was actually good. one day, I decided to smurf and I saw some guy that was a member of ~KoC~ (Knights of Camelot) and he looked lonely. so I asked him for a tryout. ~KoC~, as implied from the clantag AND clanname, was one of the bottom tier teams, but they had enough members that people knew of them, and thus that they were bad. the guy I played against was nice, but obviously no match, so I could join. wanting to sound like a big newbie, I took a name appropriate for a newbie and called myself ~KoC~BURGER.
now there was another team filled with villains. they were called the Philosophers and used Phi- as a clantag. these players would today probably be sitting around 2000 diamond league if you want to compare their sc to sc2 skills, but here's the key: if this was on SC2, they would know that I had a good 700 points more than them with a shitload of bonus pool, thus they would know that I was a much better player than them, and thus, because these guys were fuckwads: they would be sucking up to me. their true personalities would not be revealed to me, rather I would be left with the impression that "oh boy these guys sure know how to make a guy feel welcome! :-) " and I'd be none the wiser. in fact, whenever these guys saw me on my regular nickname, sucking up would be just what they did. occasionally they'd ask me for games and thank me for being nice enough to decline rather than just ignoring them....
entering their channel with the nickname ~KoC~BURGER however, what was basically a name SCREAMING and YELLING I AM BRONZE LEAGUE for all to hear, my welcome to their channel was less welcome. I ask for a game, I largely get ignored, but eventually one member throws out that I am a newbie and that there's no point in asking cause I'd just get raped. this is essentially an invitation for me to increase the level of trash talk, and sure enough eventually I sucker one of the mouthiest motherfuckers into playing.
now, long story short: I rape the guy 7-0 while his friends and teammates are watching. and here's the fucking beautiful part; his ego was so bruised and shattered that despite losing 0-7, the guy was still retarded enough to keep insulting me and saying that I was a lucky newbie. while losing 0-7. if I had been on my regular account, the guy would be throwing ovasions and thanks towards me for being willing to spend my time on a measly average player like himself.
sometimes innocent, nice guys would fall victim to bnet trolling like this, but at least for me, I'd actually end up being nice towards the guys that were nice, although I am certain not everyone did this. nice guys being saved from assholes is a positive benefit of this.
however, this aspect of people not knowing whom they are being retarded towards, and thus being allowed to pick and choose whether they are can treat their opponent with respect or disgust depending upon whether he has a high or low rank and thus higher or lower status than themselves, works to conceal the genuine assholes out there, the ones that pretend to be nice (rather than what I was doing - pretending not to be nice), and thus allows this behavior to continue. that is one of the major failures of bnet 2.0 - it's way harder to discover that someone is actually a humongous prick not deserving of my time, because everyone is nicer to people that are clearly better. and suddenly, the world loses an awesome pedagogical tool.

Interesting parable.
Are you saying that this advanced trolling technique was to help these philosophers on their way towards becoming better people? Or is it the parable itself that is the pedagogical tool? In any case, the circumstances allowing its creation will be sorely missed.

the circumstances will surely be missed, and it is possible that someone at some point learned a lesson.
but honestly it was mostly just downright hilarious to make someone, that clearly didn't deserve to be happy, angry.
