So, I need to work out. For a while I wanted to do it so girls would notice me, or so that I could get throw a physical agility test and get into a police academy somewhere. Now I just want to do it so I won't feel like a fucking slab of fat all day. V_V
Problem is, running (i.e. on streets, sidewalks, etc.) gives me joint pain and shin splints. What can I do in place of running to lose weight?
I'm not looking to get jacked at all. I just want to be toned and have more energy, stamina, and so on.
Edit: Meant to ask, should I get a gym membership and use a treadmill or some crap? After the new year I'll actually have time to go and get a membership.

Well I don't want this thread to turn in to a workout thread and there is certainly a lot of info out there on workout forums.
What I will say is that I used to run but I also suffer from joint pain and shin splints since running is a high impact excercise. The shin splints do get better once your body gets used to the running but if you have joint pain, I would advise against running.
So one of the best excercises is swimming. Its super low impact, you pretty much never get injured, and it works a lot of muscle groups/is a full body excercise. If you don't have access to an all weather pool, I would go with an eliptical machine. It models the running motion without the impact. Treadmill is better than running outside impact wise but it might still hurt your joints a little bit. You also can't do a lot of high intensity workouts/variable intensity workouts with treadmill because the treadmill can not go instantly from a very low speed to a very high speed for safety reasons. Thus elliptical is by far my favorite cardio machine.
Also, don't do pure cardio. Do a mix of cardio and weights. Muscles burn more calories so if you have more muscles, then you burn more calories doing the same 10 minutes of cardio as compared to somebody with fewer muscles. So alternate days between weights and cardio and alternate muscle groups every two days for weights so something like.
monday : chest, biceps, squats tuesday : eliptical machine or swimming wednesday : shoulders, triceps, squats thursday: eliptical machine or swimming friday : back, abs, squats saturday : eliptical machine or swimming sunday : rest
you can do squats more often because your leg muscles are bigger so they can be worked more often, other muscles need rest period.
Don't worry about looking jacked and putting on weight by doing weights. As long as your diet is decent, you will lose weight while building a bit of muscle. A mix of weights and cardio will also keep your metabolism high thus delaying your weight loss plateau.
