Fake GGs:
Nothing makes me rage more than the fake gg. I literally seem to run into this more than I run into real ggs (and this was also the case on iccup for Brood War). And yet, I haven't seen anyone else talk about them. Is there a thread about this somewhere? Or a term for it other than "fake gg"?
I will explain what I mean.
I wipe out someone's main or natural or whatever and get into a winning position. They say "gg". I say "gg" (or I don't sometimes when I am pretty much sure it's a fake gg). Then, one of a few things happens:
A. my opponents real army (not the one I just destroyed) rolls into my natural / main. I pull my main army back and rejoin with more units in my main to kill it and finally my opponent leaves, with or without GGing.
B. my opponent retreats to his expansion that he thinks is hidden (hint: it's not. You killed my scouting worker, there, dude. You should know that I know about it.). He puts a billion static defense things around it, so that I can completely surround it with my army and static defense of my own. The game gets pointlessly drawn out while I have to tech to long range stuff like collosi/seigetanks/brood lords.
C. My opponent just goes with ye olde "hide buildings all over the place".
So ENRAGING! It makes me less sportsmanlike because I just get all suspicious when I see a gg. Do any of you do this? I don't mess around with these silly failed attempts at mind games.
Not Leaving:
This is a special type of not leaving. My last opponent combined the fake GG with this. This is the not leaving where the opponent GETS PISSED AT ME.
Usually, it involves a Protoss that falls behind me way early because they can't macro. They will build a billion cannons and sit there while I take the whole rest of the map and contain them. They should just GG and leave. Whenever I realize I can't win a game, I gg and leave. Sometimes I send a scout out of my base, see my opponent moving across the middle of the map with a big army, and gg because I realize my build was way too vulnerable. I certainly don't stick around ten minutes after I know I'm dead. But these protosses especially do this. What do they expect from me? I can't efficiently kill them until I get a bunch of siege tanks and I usually go MMM so I set up a permanent contain while I get some more factories with tech labs. Last game, the guy says "quit wasting my time". I tell him "f10 n". Are these people just trolls? Or do they really think it is my job to run my units into their cannons, which is the one possible way they could actually get back into the game? The guy used the fake GG, so he obviously knows he can surrender. Ugh.
In another game, a protoss was really sticking around way too long behind cannons. I didn't want to use siege tanks because it was in a bad position where I couldn't protect the siege tanks with other units without my other units getting into range of a billion cannons. I knew if I just went with siege tanks, his army would just come out and mess up my tanks. So I tech to nukes in order to take out this ridiculous cannon farm. When the first nuke launches, my opponent says "on a scale of 1 to 10 of really fucking pissed, I'm about a 14 right now." Apparently these people are mad because I play very slowly and methodically with my 30-40 APM. I can't kill them any faster, and they can't win, so why can't they just leave? Do they have some crazy sense of pride? I'm not trying to BM, I just don't want to go into a billion cannons without a maxed army and the appropriate tech. If they surrender 90% of the map to me, why not just GG instead of waiting for me to kill them? I dunno. Meh.

wow, that sounds like a pain in the ass, i feel for you man. The worst i've had lately is a zerg offensive gg at me. ofc when people gg for me seconds before im about to gg i get into hiding buildings mode ><

Have you had people gg after losing their main, only to put you into a false sense of security? So they can buy time to make more carriers and then suddenly send like 10 carriers to kill everything you have. Happened to me. Then they just laugh and there's nothing I can do about it : (

" C. My opponent just goes with ye olde 'hide buildings all over the place' "
nothing is as priceless as fighting bronze-terrans who start to raging and flying their structures to the edges of the map... ; /

Yeah, I had someone do that, and they came out with a mothership, bunch of carriers, and some void rays to boot. Luckily, they decided to engage me in their natural, where I had placed about 15 missile turrets.

That's why I always ignore the 'gg' and continue to attack/macro until they actually leave. I never want to have that feeling where I think I won, relax, and then get smashed. That would give me a rage tumor.

This. I take two seconds to reply to the GG, then I continue playing as if my opponent did not leave.
I learned this from an old game I played where my protoss opponent false GG'd then attacked with DT's. I still won, but it taught me to never be complacent.

Happend to me in beta for a few times, now i always macro and attack and dont give a fuck about gg...
|
This has actually never happened to me. Guess you've had some bad luck lol. What server do you play on?
|
I have literally never in my 500+ games had anything like this happen to me. People go and hdie expos and try to mass defense but uh...im extremely paranoid so i scout every minute to see whats on the map, so i catch it before it can finish. but these sortsa people never really talked.

I just remember to never let my guard down even after GG. If he doesn't leave in 10 seconds just destroy him more.
|
Have not seen a fak GG in sc2 yet but I have encountred a few too many that dont give up until all their buildings are dead. Dont people have something better to do than watch me destroy everything they have for 5extra minutes?
Also how have I managed to not see you post before? You have over 6k posts and been here for over two years. Weird.
|
I haven't noticed nearly as much of this fake gg'ing that you mention, although I've come across it occasionally. It pisses me off, but I after I reply gg back I just continue killing him like others have mentioned until he leaves or is eliminated.

Maybe these guys could have a conference with Idra, and agree to meet in the middle somewhere between dragging the game out for 10 minutes and leaving the instant your opponent's army comes into vision on the minimap?
I dunno about everyone else, but I LIKE it when my opponent stays in the game much longer than they should. Playing the game itself is stressful, but once I already know I've won then I can relax and macro up a large army at my leisure. As long as I have vision of what they are doing, I don't care how long it takes. I enjoy nothing more than sitting back and taking the map while making an army to crush their last fortified base, because I know I can't lose. Is it a waste of time? Of course it is, but I like sitting around for a few extra minutes to chase down buildings and savour the win...am I the only one who thinks like this?

You're missing the best one, at least in SC2:
Opponent: gg You: gg Opponent: has left the game! You: screw off

I play on the EU server and this _literally_ never ever happens to me. People either rage quit or gg and then leave 2 seconds later (maybe some Z imba in there, who cares).
It was a bit more common when I was still Terran and people would get frustrated after a gay 40min TvT game but as Zerg you almost never have to deal with that shit.
|
Yeah, this happened to me too, they do it especially when they think they lost "unfairly". Mostly in pvp, something like they 4gate, and I 3gate blink stalker, and then they get outmicroed. Or dt rush, but i have an obs waiting.. The Thought Hammer talked about this, a game isnt over until your opponnent leaves the game. Never relax
edit: Im on eu

Sad stuff, but the game ain't over until it's over.
I think there's a Sun Tzu quote that reminds me of this...

That's terrible. Never happened to me on iCCup though. They are either noobs, or just playing with you just for shits and giggles...

Er, if it was a hard fought game or a close game, i would be so happy if he just gg and quit. I guess you're one of those few people who enjoy total destruction till the end for your foes.

Personally I always find it funny when my opponents drag out the game. It allows me to gloat more and humiliate them.

Yep, doesn't seem to even happen on EU, although I've encountered this a few times. Normally immediately after my opponent doesn't leave right after GG, I send a ling to every single expansion on the map and then just badmanner them like usual. More often it's something really weird like a Terran staying on 1 base after I destroy his natural and I scout every expo and he has nothing and then I'm incredibly confused, then I have to wait like 15 minutes to kill him with like 150 banelings because he turtles in his mined out base and then they complain about something.
|
I always wondered why people did such things as restart from scratch from a hidden base after being wiped by a 150supply army. Until I saw some of my bronze friends' replays where it actually happens quite some times that they end up winning from this situation.
|
I will say that maybe they might think they can win (though I'm sure many are just trolling you). One time I got cannon rushed on blistering sands, and my 3 zealots couldn't kill the many cannons...I immediately gg'd, only to realize like 3 seconds later that my opponent sucked and that I had 400 minerals to expand to my natural! Anyway, I kept making zealots and then sent around 6-8 to wipe out his base...only to see that he hasn't built a gateway this entire time. He had been trying to build cannons to harass my natural. Anyway, after I got all his probes in my base and his, he realized that I had won...only to bitch to me about me saying "gg". That it was false etc...
Well, I definitely gg'd a little early, and I wonder if some of the people you play are like this. They gg only to realize a few seconds later that they think they can win (even if they can't).
|
I love it when they type "Has left the game", to try to lure you into quiting. I always end up laughing and just say nice try
|
If you play as terran, and he cannons up like a little bitch. just go ghosts + nuke. its better than having to throw down a factory + techlab + research. esp if ur playing vs P ur gonna have a big MMM ball so u`ll already have ghosts. just research the nuke. and nuke his ass. 1 nuke > cannons.

i do this now, before i let my guard down and they just get enough things to fight u back. there are many player that after they lose their initial battler they type GG but dont leave and u calmdown for a couple of second and they have another army waiting for u lol.
|
That pisses me off more then anything when I see it at the lans. It just like come dude, people are watching, are you really going to pull this shit? At least most of the people I know who play wont let up until the other person leaves just because of the fake gg haha
|
Agreed. Fake GGs are so annoying and BM.
Usually now if someone says GG and doesn't leave after about 10 seconds, I'll say something like "this is the part where you leave" to try and get them to take the hint. But yeah, I've lost a few games because I let my guard down when they gg'd, but now I know never to stop until they've left the game.
|
Actually never has happened to me before (maybe a few dealyed leaves after gg)
I guess I`m lucky (and dont play that often)

Exactly.
I feel for you, OP. Just ignore their rage and ignore the fact that you believe that you've won the game... until you actually see the Victory screen. People do incredibly annoying tactics and become incredibly BM... even if they're the ones who're at fault.
|
what's worse is the fake GG where you think you have the game won and relax, only to find the other guy has hidden tech and rolls you while you have stopped macroing. You feel pissed and don't want to GG and he ends up having to kill all your buildings.
|
i used to love typing "gg f***ing f*ggot" before I overwhelmed fail bunkerrushers/ proxygaters with ultras/swarm if game is not already finished then.
just ignore it...

This has personally never happened to me, but now I'll make sure to keep a look out (=

Offensive GGs + homophobic slurs in response to a certain playstyle! That's really classy.
Grow up.

Didn't read all the posts, but who cares?
If you don't see him LEAVE the game, just pound down his army/base until he's eliminated. Simple as that.
gL.

Pretty much this.
You should always play through until they leave because it's good macro/micro practice especially if a huge battle has just occurred. Knowing how to transition well out of those situations is good for the next games as well.
There's always something to be practiced, and usually the start is the least of your worries so always just play it through until they leave even if they GG and don't.
|
Happened sometimes on icc but in sc2 I can't remember a situation like that to be honest. I know that it sucks but in the end he's jsut dragging the game by a little and you gotta stay calm since playing angry isn't good for you, regarding the next game now
If this happens often to you then I feel sorry.
|
If someone gg's I'll quickly type gg while continuing to play at full strength until they leave. If they gg and aren't really dead and they end up winning I'll probably float my buildings around the map and go afk. I'm mature like that.
|
the worst is when someone GG's and actually thinks they lost. they don't leave. you stop macroing but they continue to do so. you lose because of that. happened to me numerous times...

Fuck I had this in a ZvZ once on Blue Storm. I was killing everything in his main and he said gg and when I finished killing him off the game didn't end. Obviously with Zerg you can't just make a random pylon or depot anywhere so the only thing you can do is make another hatch or build an extractor which are both extremely easy to find. I ended up finding his hidden base on the bottom right with a lot of sunks and spores.
Basically what I realized is that he made a hidden expo very early on which was the reason why I was able to kill him since he didn't make units when I did. While I was just sitting complacent killing his main in a leisurely pace he took that time to turtle the fuck up to hell. I was forced to tech up to hive and get guardians out which takes some time. He obviously died the moment I got my guardians out but it was annoying as fuck and I wanted to strangle the shit out of him.
|
All your opponents have been on some incredible drugs that have made them highly patriotic to their pretend civilization. They want to go down with their ship, as a wily sea-dog once said, and they want to cry while it happens. Some people are really into RP.
|
I do it sometimes as well when I get mad. But I leave lots of times with or without gg. Especially when I know I lost, like after scouting a hidden fully saturated gold expansion.
