So I was sitting around last night on the ptr server and it came to me.
I had a vision and I think I know how to make bnet look much better for Starcraft.
Now bear with me on this one, but my idea looks like this:
![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/qVsMw.png)
Basically, you click the Join Channel button or whatever you want to call it, maybe just "Channel" or something, and it gives you a list of default channels, as well as any ones that you can like manually type in on your own if you feel like it.
The Profile button would do like the same stuff as it does in bnet right now, so there's nothing really new about that.
The Create Game thing is like where you can load up a map file that you have in your hard drive. This way people can host maps for themselves and their friends for whatever they like. They could also use this thing to load replays in the same way that they would host a normal map. That way people can join, download the replay, and watch it with their friends.
The Join Game thing is kinda different though. Basically, when you click it, a list opens of all of the games that are currently waiting to start -- which are the same ones that other people created by way of the Create Game button that I mentioned just a paragraph up from here.
The Ladder ranking button works pretty much the same as the ladder ranking button, too, so there isn't really much difference there from how it currently is on bnet.
Then there's the quit button. I was kind of thinking that it works like the Menu button does right now. It doesn't really matter though, because the Escape button gives you the Menu thing anyway... so I figure that maybe just a Quit button would be perfectly fine.
So yeah what do you guys think? I realize its pretty different from what you're all used to, but I really think that I might be on to something here. Something about it just strikes me as fitting in well with the game.
edit - a really cool guy on page 2 made a composite picture using ms paint or photoshop or something (i dont really know but he did a GREAT job on it!). i thought it'd be a good idea to edit it in for the op so people could see his interpretation of what i was talking about: + Show Spoiler +
edit again! this guy on page 3 used photoshop to convert that picture i just showed you guys in the other edit above into starcraft 2 theme! it looks so nice! + Show Spoiler +

hahahaha, absolutely amazing idea. Such extreme innovation is welcomed on TL.net
|
Really? I mean it just came to me last night while I was playing Starcraft. I was afraid you guys wouldn't like it.
|
I see what you did there.
|
It's so simple, streamlined, and less cluttered, with a focus on community.
|
rofl, you do a good job at seeming like some one who doesn't know what they're talking about. In all honesty though, i think b.net 1 or w/e u wanna call it was pretty ideal. It focuses more on community communication and involvement, and didn't worry so much about fuckin cool looking buttons and swoosh noises. I think i would rather see functionality and a little less "wow-factor"
|
|
Hahaha well played OP, well played

I was afraid you guys would think that this is too iBnet or whatever because of how minimalistic it is compared to what's already there. I thought I'd get banned or something for being stupid and unoriginal.
I'm really happy though that you guys like it. I just wish that Blizzard could see it. They'd never listen to me though =(

Best idea I've ever heard.

While this is a good idea, you seem not to have considered the technological requirements for such a system. I'm afraid we just aren't capable of something as advanced as "chat channels" at the moment. Perhaps in a few years and with proper research funding, we'll be able to actually implement this idea, but in the mean time, I think it's going to have to take a backseat to other crucial features such as Facebook integration.
|
I know you just came up with it, but the style kinda feels old, like 1998-ish.
|
whoa whoa whoa, one change at a time people
|
On December 06 2010 04:55 iloahz wrote: whoa whoa whoa, one change at a time people Yeah you're right this is kind of a lot though. It was just an idea I came up with the other night, that's all. I'm really happy that you guys like it, though.
|
it just looks 1:1 like wc3 bnet, except that the big buttons at the left are small buttons in a thin vertical bar between chat area and ad banner.
/edit: oh lol, i get it :D sorry for not having started esports with wc3 lol :D
|
|
this kind of crazy design would never work. give up on your pipe dreams you dirty hippie.

On December 06 2010 04:59 MisterD wrote: it just looks 1:1 like wc3 bnet, except that the big buttons at the left are small buttons in a thin vertical bar between chat area and ad banner. Really? I seriously never played wc3. That's so weird, though. I wish I was old enough when they were making that game to apply to work for Blizzard back then. It sounds like I would've fit right in with those guys. Too bad I don't really know that much about programming =(
This kinda stuff is probably too hard for them to make anyway. Oh well. Just thought I'd share my idea with you guys d=(^_^)z

wow amazing.
This looks like a very very modern bnet.

This looks pretty awesome. I can't believe that blizzard employees have never thought of this layout before.

Someone show Blizzard this blog right now!

You should get a job at Blizzard.

Oh my god that is so well made! Did you do that yourself? Just now? You must be pro at this.
If I may make one criticism, though: it looks a little pixelated. Don't get me wrong though because that looks AWESOME and way better than the mspaint thing I did earlier.
I'm sure that if you could like somehow make it SC2 themed or whatever then it'd look much better. I'm sure Blizzard would like it better so that their Art Department guys don't feel so bad =(
But yeah though thanks for making that. I should put it in the op
|
i'm sure someone with actual picture editing skills is making a layout with current the current sc2 bnet models
tbh tho, the current chat channel isn't "that" bad. it's better than nothing.
|
Hahahaha I hope this thread gets featured. Great idea!
I'd be really curious to see if you had any other really good ideas

Can you think up of another crazy idea like LAN?

One of the best blog posts for a long time - well played sir.
|
You dont even need a profile button. You can just click on any name and it should open the profile. A lot more convenient imo.
|
I can't tell.... Is this guy serious? Or is he trolling.
|
^ How could it be trolling, it's one of the best ideas made to improve battlenet. Wow chat rooms, who would have thought of that.
|
This is so 90's. add facebook and cut some other stuff and they might consider it. xD
|
Err, we need another button on the left. LAN
That aside, this format is great.

Very well played sir, hat's off :D

This is absolutely retarded.. We need facebook integration and real life friends, not channels. This isnt 1982 anymore, no one wants simple layouts or designs. Complex and confusing>simple and efficient no matter what. and watching replays with someone else is most stupid thing i have ever heard

You should copyright this, I really don't think that anyone has though of such an innovative design yet; you don't want your ideas stolen do you?

Do you really want chat channels though? I think you should remove them and then just put in a big facebook window in it's place so you can browse facebook while you play Starcraft.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of this idea. If players were allowed to talk freely in groups, then they might begin to plot against Blizzard. Also, if players were allowed to choose the games they got into, then they might not have the distinct pleasure of playing five straight ZvT's against marine/scv rushing terrans on Steppes of War. How else will they appreciate the game?
That's my problem with theorycrafting threads like this one. Some bro who thinks he's really smart comes up with an idea that has never been tested, and would obviously fail if put into practice. They post it on TL, and ask people to discuss. What's there to discuss? The idea is bad. I mean, do you all really want chat channels?

just combine the best features of both
2.0: more pleasing interface auto-matchmaking ability to create parties (the photoshopper forgot this)
1.0: chat channels cross-region play

You forgot something which needs to be in Bnet 2.0. How could you forget this?
This is like waayyyyyyyyy more important than chat channels or cross-region play get with the 21st century.

This already looks pretty solid. Take all the good things of Bnet and combine them with the few new nice features Bnet2.0 offers (plus Facebook-Integration, if you have to), and you are set.
I still cannot understand how they messed up this badly with Bnet 2.0. They had all the tools they needed handed to them, and created pure crap, while making a wonderful game at the same time.
I just don't understand

Thing is, most of this is in game as of patch 1.2.0, with the exception of world/region ladders, which are available on sc2ranks.com.
