kind of annoys me that the guy in the image probably donated money out of spite rather than genuine concern. ironically the facebook "slacktivism" appears to have had the right effect on him.
(i for one think the profile pic thing is awfully useful at spreading awareness.)
|
Slacktivism at its finest. People always want to feel good about themselves without having to do anything. These events always appear once a month/special occasions, and they do nothing towards the cause.
If you truly care about something, why not just do it. Oh wait, it saves time to just believe in a cause, and let someone else do it for you.

I assumed it was pokemon day since everyone was choosing fire pokemon.
Noobs.

I still have my pokemon from pokemon profile picture december, I fit in.

Facebook is a leech and a scavenger. It's highly useful as it feeds on the useless & dead. It's an important part that social networks play in the modern food chain. Food being whatever you want it to be starting from money...
I do use it though, although I have close to no " friends". I use it to discuss with a couple of guys about shit. Of course there is still the 50 something people who just fucking had the need to be my friend. Naturally I spam random shit there(videos/pics & w/e) every time I check if any of those guys(-real friends) are online. Just to fucking clog their oh so precious facebook. Dun think even half of them know that you can blog the updates from me. I get strange gratification when I do that, maybe I'm a bit sadistic.
|
There's a post going around tumblr about that exact status update and picture changing.
In all honesty, I think the idea of it has been lost, and it isn't raising any awareness. People are like "DERP DERP I LUV DIGIMON AND DOUG YAYAYA" I've had friends on facebook also trying to.. like.. Out profile picture each other? Trying to find the best childhood cartoon, and trying to beat everyone else with it's awesomeness. I find this extremely ridiculous.
A girl on my facebook updated her status with the same message as everyone else, but included links to where you can donate to programs, charities and groups working against child abuse. This I found was much more useful.
Facebook has the extreme potential to be extremely influencing, but people are like "hurrdurr I am raising awareness by changing my profile picture and commenting and being like L-O-L!"
/shrug

What? I just changed my profile picture because it's fun, when did this become an issue over child abuse? Nobody on my feed is talking about child abuse or anything :O *scroll scroll*
Ohhhh I got on the Pokemon train, not the childhood cartoon train. Friend - "I'm thoroughly annoyed by whoever decided to make the "Profile picture for a children's cause thing" during December. It's Pokemon Profile Picture Month, people; get with it!"

Then I hear about kids who threaten to call the police coz their dad whacked them on the ass for smoking pot. But there are the stories of people beating their kids with bike chains and other horrifying crap. How to winnow the chaff from the wheat? Bleh. Rofl, this is massively off topic, yet frightfully hilarious. Seriously though, facebook has destroyed the notion of friendship. Now that I've been off Facebook for 6 months, a number of my real life friends, after I email/im them don't even remember who I am anymore. I have to bring up "We used to carpool together!" or "We dated for a week!"

What? December is Pokemon profile picture month! Pick another month to host your dumb event =.=

As a few people have already hinted at/said; it's probably more effective at raising awareness than anything. Spur people to donate to the cause -- (although a lot of people will do it just because they are following the Facebook fashion). Similarly to when it was doppelgänger week...I suppose that served no other means more than for a bit of fun.
Even if a small percentage of the millions of Facebook users see this and then donate to this cause, then really it's a smart marketing decision by the charity -- it's free exposure that will snowball.
Plus on the issue of people being assholes and saying things like 'LOL how duz this help with child abuse?'...may I introduce you to the internet? Facebook is surely full of the same people who post dumb YouTube comments.

Change your facebook profile picture to a progamer from Starcraft and invite your friends to do the same. Until monday (Dec.6) there should be no noob faces on facebook, but an invasion of high level play.

facebook is my new IM.
also my current profile pic is Benny The Ball. Man, I loved TopCat when I was a kid.

Since this is the internet, I fully expect that someone out there has changed their profile pic to pedobear.

I never have, nor ever will create a facebook page.
Facebook is just evil, I prefer actual friends in real life thank you very much.
|
I had a Facebook page, but not any longer. I realized what a waste of time it really was. It made me care about people who, because I probably didn't like them in the first place, I never talked to in real life. Good riddance I say!

i have a collection of dolls just for when i really want to be violent to children but don't want to go to jail

Or, you know, you could just not take facebook too seriously and rather use it as a tool of epic procrastination and casual stalking, and if anyone DOES really annoy you, you could remove them from you news feed. But, you know, that might be a dumb idea.
|
I never made one and I haven't regretted it at all. There is too much negative that overrides the convenience that it provides.
|
Facebook pisses me off too. I wonde rsometimes why I still use it. I've deleted myself from facebook before.
Funny story. A girl messaged me on facebook and we talked and talked, conversation was great... kind of. I said a lot of crazy things, like I do, she responded with laughter and such. She was loving it, and I was loving that she liked me. Anyways... Long story short. We go out on a date AND it was fucking terrible. I had the worst time I could have possibly had. I dropped her off and never talked to her again. We could easily still be friends, but I'd rather not waste my life on that. :D Facebook sucks.
