Not quite the same, as you're essentially diluting the amount of alcohol by drinking the energy drink. Obviously they should increase the alcohol % to compensate.

Not much really, in fact, in the same volume quantities, I'm pretty sure there is more alcohol and caffeine in a vodka redbull than a four loko.

Four Loko is putting it together in one drink, whereas Redbull doesn't make alcoholic energy drinks. Of course nothing's stopping you from doing that on your own.

To expand on it, the ban isn't really due to some kind of serious health risk (though there is some truth to caffeine making you feel less drunk, so you end up drinking more), it's because of its accessibility (very cheap compared to a redbull cocktail and it's premixed), and because it's become a fad among the younger crowd. There was a similar, but much shorter lived 'outrage' back when I was in college about redbull vodka, but it didn't lead to a ban like this.

Well then you would be paying $4.50 instead of $2.50 to get that Buzz which adds up pretty quickly. Idk about you but if I went to McDonalds and they suddenly gave me two less cheese burgers, I'd start going somewhere else.
I guess its back to Jack n Jolt after my 4 lokos supply goes away. I wonder how many kids are gonna just start drinking mass amounts of "home made lokos" with much higher alcohol content and get sent to the hospital.
It's not the drink, it is the bad parenting - If alcohol is a huge no-no kids are going to drink, and if they get in trouble because they have it; they will finish whatever bottle they get their hands on to get rid of the evidence. A lot of people start drinking responsibly after they get over the fact of being able to buy alcohol.

dude this stuff really should be banned. I drank 2 each night during this last weekend before I started drinking, and I ended up browning out pretty easily both nights. Shit's pretty dangerous.

its the reason jaegarbombs fuck you up, the alcohol slows you down the energy drink speeds you up, your body stays alert and feels better than it should after consuming as much alcohol as that. Hence why people get fucked up so badly.

Guys the difference between this and Vodka and Red Bull is that Vodka and Red Bull is like $5.00 USD, and you'd need five of them or something to equate to a Four Loko, which is $1.99 USD. So they differ in price by a factor of 12. It's 12 times as expensive to get the same effect from Vodka and Red Bull.
And the caffeine definitely makes a difference. It makes you want to dance more and hook up with bitches when it's super late and the non Four Loko drinkers are throwing in the towel.
Edit more: Liquid volume is an issue. A 40oz. and a couple no doz or Excedrin would do the same thing, which is what I used to do (and might do again due to the ban  ). But a 40oz. is almost twice as much to drink before going out and is actually slightly less alcohol.
Also, the ban is because idiot kids who don't understand dimensional analysis can't figure out that a 24oz. 12% drink is actually serious, even if it's sugary. So they hammered it like retards, fucked themselves up, and went to the hospital.
And outraged parents and politicians decided that it's better to ban a drink than to admit that they have done a bad job in teaching kids about alcohol (i.e., in the U.S.A. at least, the official educational policy is to tell kids that all alcohol is bad and therefore they have no information to make decisions, and experiment and make poor decisions instead of having any idea how to moderate their intake).

Seriously though, these things are disgusting. None of their flavors do a good job of masking the awful malt liquor taste that lingers in your mouth. There are so many better options if your goal is to pregame. Just take two or three shots to get started; it's not a more expensive option by any significant margin, and a lot less painful. Four Lokos rank among the worst alcoholic beverages I've ever tasted, but at least they're better than Jungle Joose. Ugh...
