I spent a lot of time reflecting while making this mix on my relationship with certain albums, brought on by the difficulties I had mixing in the Boards Of Canada track I ended up using. I bought Music Has The Right To Children the week it came out (back when everything on Warp was auto-buy for me). That was my first week at undergrad and the album played a big role in my college listening and was even a point of bonding between myself and some of my best friends. (oh to be 18 again, high as hell in a dorm room with that music cranked...)
In past mixes I've used tracks from other albums that I have similar levels of memorization and associations and not had trouble but I had a hell of a time with this one. I was so acutely aware of the overlapping tracks not being a part of each other that it was making everything sound so wrong. I had to rework the mix so many times to get it to flow well and have transitions into and out of the BoC track that I was happy with. It was an interesting challenge and I feel like I reached an even further depth of understanding and appreciation for one of my favorite albums because of it. The music fan part of me wishes that would happen every mix, the other competing hobby parts of me hope it never happens again.
It really makes me wonder how my mixes sound to you guys, who are listening to them through the filter of your own experiences and backgrounds. To what degree do you feel familiarity affects your judgments of selection, sequencing and transitions? Do you prefer to hear songs you know well or new things?
Check this one out, let me know what you think.
