Well I am just going to get right into it. Tomorrow morning i am getting all four of my wisdom teeth pulled. I am 18 years old, heading off to college soon so i have been going to all these dr. appointments and getting shots and stuff. Then this last monday while at the dentist, My mom asked the Dentist if i would need to get my Wisdom teeth removed. He did his fancy x-ray stuff on me and it was decided that i definitley need to get them removed, and the sooner the better.
So here i am 4 days later and I am pretty nervous about tomorrow. I will be going under both Local and General Anesthesia so i am pretty sure that i will not be in any pain. I already have all of my pain/ antibiotic medications ready, and my mom will be there to pick me up/take me home after. So even though i am completely ready to get it done, i am just very aprehensive about it. I have never been "Put to sleep" before so that part worries me a little but i am sure that i will be ok. I don't really know. Let me know what you all think. Do you think i am just being a wuss, or if you have been through this also. Any advice would be sweet! thanks
Oh and i wanted to mention that i have been saving up all of my Youtube Commentaries so i will have something to do for the next few days. Starcraft Replays here i come, haha
EDIT: Well thanks a bunch for all of the support, and i thought i would let you all know how it went.
After reading all the posts i wasn't that nervous anymore so i was able to sleep pretty well last night. I woke up early (No food 6 hours before) so i didn't get a breakfast which kinda sucked. So we went to the Dr office place and it was only about a 10 minute wait. I sat in the fancy Dentist/operating chair as i awaited the Party to start. The Nurse (or dentist Tech or what ever, i will just call here the nurse) got me hooked up on an IV and got my blood pressure/ Heart rate all wokred out.
Then the doctor dude came in, asked me a few questions and released the IV full of the Anesthesia. And WOW. i could kinda feel it go in my arm and then all of the sudden i felt completely calm and relaxed. My last thoughts were "Ahhh, thats the stuff" like the stim pack marines say. I swear I was thinking that. Then about 45 minutes later i was starting to come out of it but it really felt like i had just taken a nap.
While i was still semi-conscious, my mom was with me and she says i was talking a bunch and making fun of some of the male nurses. She said that I said " Hey, you guys think your tough, well i just lost my tongue so,,,,, hahahaha" and then i would pretend to poke my eye out so they would get all nervous. I also pretended to throw up a couple of times. Then i told one of the Pregnant nurses that i lost weight from the surgery and that she should do it to so she can lose some weight. I swear i am telling the truth. I do not remember any of this but my mom said that i did all of this.
I am now home on the couch and the numbness is starting to wear off. I am able to start drinking a little water and my jaw is a little Painful. I have taken some painkillers but i am waiting until i am able to eat before i take anymore so i don't get sick. There was definitely alot of blood but It didn't really hurt at all. I just hope i dont end up getting a dry socket or an infection.
Well thanks again for all the helpful posts and "GL's"!

fuck me, 4 at once?
From what I've heard from friends, getting this done HURTS afterwards. I think the usual advice for mouth injuries follows here, avoid really cold/hot foods as they might jar the nerves or whatever the more technical term is.
You most definitely aren't being a wuss. Getting put under is harmless unless the guy is a complete incompetent + the pain will be substantial for a few days even with the meds (again, just from what I've heard).
|
Don't worry about the "Put to sleep" part, you won't feel or remember a thing (maybe a vague sensation), and you'll wake up just fine as well (I woke up right after the operation). Don't forget to take your antibiotics, because as you might figure, its quite important
But, the one thing that you will have to worry about is the aftermath. The removal itself is relatively painless and quick... but... *shudders*
I have a friend who took out all his wisdom teeth a few days ago (he's 15 though, so go figure) and he felt very little to no pain / swelling after the removal. However, being a bit older when I got all mine taken out I had a fuckload of swelling and just dull pain in my cheeks, not to mention the lack of solid food made me very disappoint
It's good that you are getting it over with right now, as your doc is right; removal gets more complicated as your wisdom teeth develop more, because when they are fully developed, it becomes more difficult to remove without potentially affecting your sinuses etc. Besides, you won't have to go through this bullshit when you're in college (I did mine during this year's spring break... worst spring break evar, then I had to go back to school).
Oh, but I didn't take any pain medications at all. So it is definitely bearable, just annoying.
|
I got one taken out and it was painless. There was just a fuckload of blood (I'm also 18). But 4 at once? Holy Jesus mother of Christ GL HF
|
I'll just copy paste what I said in the surgery thread from yesterday,
I've had ~25 general anesthetics and even more surgeries, just chill out as much as possible when you go into the operation theater..I basically hypnotise myself by completely relaxing my body through counting my breaths and getting a nice slow inhale/exhale rhythm...when you start to feel the anesthetic taking over your head and vision (have eyes closed ofc), just relax even more and let it envelop you.
The more relaxed and comfortable you are going into the general, the happier you will be waking from it.
Hope it all goes well for you!
|
its pretty much go to sleep in a chair, and wake up feeling groggy with the procedure being done. they even let you keep your teeth :D
the downside is, after the anesthesia wears off, usually around bed time that day, you'll be in throbbing pain. just a warning.
the upside is you get to eat icecream, congee, mashed potatoes. you should becareful not to drink through a straw.!
|
You'll have to eat soups and juice for 2 weeks. Except than you will be fine. And your dentist is right, the sooner the better. I did it at 22 when they were fully grown and suffered a lot. (they also grew horizontally T_T )
|
The "put to sleep" part is quite odd the first time becuase the gas smells funny. xD
|
I've had it done with everything that you mentioned, its easy quick and painless. I was lucky enough to not have any problems with the re-opening of the gums after but a lot of people I talk to say they've had problems with that more than anything. They told me I was going to be "put to sleep" also with the anesthesia but it was more like just being really relaxed and tired, not literally put to sleep but maybe it will be different for you. I didn't experience any pain during or after the surgery at all, the only thing is you can kind of feel them pulling it out but not in a painful way at all, It's just a very weird sensation. You just have to remember to take it lightly if possible, especially with food. Hope that helps.

I'm pretty sure they will give you Nitrous Oxide which is awesome. I've had a ton of teeth pulled in the past and it was never as bad as I imagined. When they put the mask on you, you'll get euphoric for about 30 seconds to a few minutes, and the next thing you know, you're being woken up with a ton of gauze in your mouth.
I say "woken up" in the least sense of the words. It's hard to describe, but I never felt completely asleep, but rather like I was barely holding onto consciousness. Time goes very fast too. The operation takes over an hour but it feels like only a few minutes!
You'll be alright. Eating jello, ice cream, liquids for a couple days while vegging out on pain killers is definitely not a terrible experience.
|
Yea, so I just got my four wisdom teeth removed yesterday! It went pretty well for me, very little pain/swelling, just hard to eat. The general anesthetic was pretty cool, went to sleep, and woke up in the recovery room all finished. Hopefully yours will go just as smoothly.
|
Make sure you get those pain meds and a lot of good drinks/soft foods
Oh, and the drive home was hell for me. Every bump was like a knife stabbing me in my gums

Ya well i am glad to know that i am not just being a totaly baby. I have been reading all about it and i feel a lot better about it now. I think the worst part is going to be that i can't eat what i want. Thanks for the support and i will let you know how it went tomorrow!

Here's my wisdom teeth story:
I walked in, he put the IV in my arm and asked "So what school do you go to?" Then I woke up in my bed with a mouth full of blood and a shitload of pain. IDK how they do that shit.
|
Yo I got all 4 cut out at once. Didn't get any laughing gas. Only local anesthetics (this means shots).
It's seriously not too bad. It's a one time thing that hurts for maybe 4 days... week tops. Getting all 4 done at once saves you the trouble of going back again. My suggestion is to REST. Right when you get out, you want the bleeding to stop. They'll give you gauze and stuff for that. Keep away from anything strenuous. This includes things like picking up stuff that's really heavy. I picked up a huge box when I had them removed and the bleeding started again. Don't eat anything that could poke into your gums and start the bleeding again.
Secondly, keep it clean. You don't want to deal with infections. Don't eat anything that could poke into your gums and start the bleeding again. Ask the dentist about how to clean your mouth (ex. can you use mouthwash, etc.).
Don't be nervous! If you're getting shots... that should be the only painful part of the procedure. And after you get them out, it will hurt. Can't help that. But if you take care of yourself and your mouth, everything should be okey-dokey real soon.
Best of luck!
|
I got mine taken all 4 at once too.
Getting put to sleep is awesome as you're basically getting high. You feel the drug flooding you, think "this shit is awesome" then wake up hours later. The week after will suck but after that you'll be ok.
I think I even said "yeahhh this is the shittt" shortly before passing out before another operation I had. Bet the doctors thought I was a mad junkie haha
|
I think the severity of the pain probably depends a lot on the condition of your wisdom teeth (whether they're impacted, still under the surface, or already emerged etc).
I had all 4 pulled at once. Three were fully emerged and one wasn't. The first three were as simple as reaching in and pulling them out. The last required a little bit of drilling.
My entire procedure was completely painless and took less than ten minutes (excluding ~20 waiting for drugs to kick in). Afterward I experienced almost no pain except for the spot where they had to drill, and that pain was only comparable to your average headache.
The worst part of the process was trying not to bite my tongue while waiting for the anesthesia to wear off. Your experience could differ I guess if your wisdom teeth are badly impacted or something, but your fears are probably exaggerated.
Afterward you'll probably get instructions from your doctor/dentist or whatever he's called, like not to drink through straws etc. Make sure you follow them, infections or dry sockets are what you should be most worried about.

IMO him getting all four taken out at once is MUCH better than getting them taken out on two separate occasions. So much more convenient..
|
hahaha i'm going to get all of my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow morning too, no joke.
but yeah, don't worry about the anesthesia, i've had surgery before and it's basically just like going to sleep and waking up later.
|
Had mine pulled as well, all 4 at once. it can be a little nerve wracking knowing that they're gonna put you out, but everything'll be fine. its actually kinda freaky knowing theres a gap of several hours you cant hope to remember.
oh! pro-tip: wear an old pair of pants/shirt that you arent very attached to, because the anathesia sometimes makes some people pee/poop themselves.
|
I had all 4 at once done. It was painful for the first day but beyond that I only needed my pain meds (percocet) when I ate, and even then only if it was solid food (so only for ~1 week). Your experience may differ.
The anesthesia was no problem. They told me to tell them when I started to feel drowsy after the IV was inserted. I didn't get that far. I was out in maybe 15 seconds. I woke up after the procedure was done in no pain, went to Wendys and ate (don't overdo it here - you can cause some damage without realizing it if the bites you take are too large or you eat food that isn't, y'know, basically liquid), then got my prescription filled. It was bad for the rest of the day and the next, but not past that.
Hope your experience isn't too bad.
edit: ZERGLING WHOA FINALLY. 150 POSTS LATER....
|
weird, i got my wisdom teeth removed and i experienced no pain afterwards... they gave me medication but i didn't even need it. only thing that bothered me was a mild annoying string or two stuck in my face that i could taste the tips of with my teeth. the only thing i remember about the procedure was that after everything was done, i was laughing my ass off at everything that occured once i woke up, then fell back asleep in the car ride home.
|
I had all four removed at once and it wasn't that bad. I was actually awake during the entire time and didn't feel a thing. The worse part was actually getting the anesthesia because shots in your cheeks is kinda
They also gave me these pain killer things but I never needed them. Only inconvenience was that I couldn't really eat rice (I'm asian) because of the four holes I now had in my mouth :p
|
For me, I sat/laid down on their contraption of something or other while the dentist tried to make small talk under circumstances where I wouldn't have wanted to respond. I went to sleep and woke up with nurses shoving gauze in my mouth. My face was numb for the majority of the day, wherein I essentially slept, read, and took a T3 whenever I felt like I needed it.
I didn't smoke for three days (which is a long time for me) due to my wariness over getting a dry socket. Dry sockets are where the wound left by the absent teeth is either too dry to heal properly or where the blood clot on the wound falls off. From what I've heard, it is one of the most god-awfully painful things you can ever have happen to you and to be avoided. Therefore, I ate gourmet soups for the week (being at home with parents who can cook is crucial during the recuperation period because otherwise you'll be too zonked to cook anything yourself and/or you'll eat lousily from cans). It was during a reading week at my university and being that I had ample opportunity to sit in bed and read, I wasn't behind much at all.
Mind your diet. Rinse after every meal or anything involving your mouth. No straws or cigarettes for at least three days. Make sure there's nothing too strenuous scheduled for that week or so. Follow their directions and schedule a check-up for the next week. And you'll be fine.
|
My wisdom teeth removal wasn't bad at all. I just got numbed, and a little laughing gas during the operation. I returned to school a few hours after the operation and was feeling almost completly better the next day, other than minor soreness while eating. No problems with swelling, bleeding, pain, or dry sockets.
Only thing that sucks is that you can still bleed a bit after the operation and with a numbed mouth you dont realize your bleeding until its like dripping out of your mouth, which is pretty gross. Just be prepared with tissues.
|
heyyyy at least u are getting anesthesia...hahah someone i know had their wisdom teeth pulled O_O but yeah i got rid of all 4 in one going as well. its not as bad as u think. HF!

So I'm also 18 and going of to college, but how am I supposed to know when I need my wisdom teeth taken out. I was told to wait till it starts hurting, but that hasn't happen. Do they come out later for different people? My friend was born never having wisdom teeth...not fair

They can come out at different times, yes, but some people never need them taken out.

|
my top two have grown in without impact, i have 1 bottom growing in without impacting and im still waiting on one more. i experience very little pain unless i bite down on the wisdom tooth that is growing. i just turned 20, i wont get them out unless there is cause to do so
|
I didnt have to get any removed -.- lucky me.
|
My feelings on the process.
Easy: The removal. With general it's a total nonissue, but I got local and it wasn't a huge deal. It's a bit disturbing as you can, in a sense, feel them yanking your teeth out, but it's not as unsettling as I thought it might be and there's zero pain if your dentist is competent with the anesthesia.
Annoying: The anesthesia. Most of the numbing injections I got were only minimally painful, but the one they did in the roof of my mouth was a real bitch. I opted for Nitrous Oxide to make the ordeal more pleasant. First time around it did a good job relaxing me but it was nothing to write home about. Second time I think I was given too much as I got really dizzy and nauseous. Felt like I was going to puke or faint for 10 minutes afterwards.
Bad: The pain afterwards. I got each side done separately. The right side was first and my pain was limited to slight soreness. The left side was a more complex extraction, and the pain kicked in within about 6 hours after the procedure. Even with drugs I was having a pretty rough time for 36 hours. Constant dull pain with occasional sharp kicks.
FUUUUUUUUUUU: Liquid diet, I wasn't concerned about this in the slightest pre-op, but it got to be really awful. I know some people are able to eat after a couple days, but I didn't move past semi-solids for about 5 days each time. You just long for a big juicy burger and you have to settle for tomatto soup and Ensure meal supplements. What made matters worse is how gross my mouth always felt. The soup and thick meal replacement drinks coupled with excessive saliva and blood gave my mouth this awful, gooey coating. I tried to rinse it away, but it would always come back eventually (plus you can't really rinse your mouth for fear of getting dry socket). Feeling constantly uncomfortable and hungry sucks.
To be fair, most people I've talked to have had an easier time with it. What I went through is probably worse than what you will experience (unless your teeth are really impacted). My cousin just got hers done and there was practically no swelling or pain.

I was just like . "Whatever you guys want to listen to, I don't want annoyed surgeons working on me." and we laughed good, the music was gay, then I woke up.

My God... so many people have had their wisdom teeth pulled out. I hadn't even heard of such a thing until now. If I go to the dentist and she tells me I need my wisdom teeth pulled out I would stand up and leave. lol So what's the reason? Does it hurt you or is it aesthetic?

Wisdom teeth can prevent your normal teeth in the back from growing the right way. Bassicly screwing up all your teeth :p
So it's not aesthetic, you don't even see your wisdom teeth until you really open your mouth haha.
And why leave, if you don't do it now it's bound to hurt alot worse in the future.
|
Why do you get the option for GA? When I had my wisdom teeth pulled (3 at one go), it was just a blindfold and a buttload of injections. There wasn't even prior warning. I just went in for a routine checkup and the dentist said, "hmmm... these need to come out. Right, let's pull them out now." I told him, "wait! I'm saving them for when I want to get sick leave from work!" but he didn't listen.

Depends. The best way to find out is to get some x-rays done(posterior bitewings), it will show exactly where and how the wisdom teeth are growing, if they're growing straight and normal you will never have to get them removed unless they start causing pain. Some people have their wisdom teeth growing backwards or pushing the rest of their teeth which distorts their bite which is why a lot of people get them removed.
Also the storyteller => get a better dentist.

You're being a puss. It's painful for the first day and uncomfortable after that at worst, as long as you don't stupidly eat rice or something like that with huge holes in your jaw.

This. I had 6 removed at once (4 wisdom, 2 [tooth between canine and molar]). Just eat baby food for like a week (it's delicious, seriously). Don't take any pain killers. For me, they didn't do much. There was a lingering soreness in my mouth for like a day and a half, so it wasn't bad. Side effects of pain killers are worse than what they're supposed to alleviate.
|
nah painkillers are pretty cool, get them anyway dude
it's just not bad stop being a wuss
|
Don't worry about it I did the same thing and the surgery was painless. Then just get stoned on vicodin for a week and you'll be fine. It's more annoying then painful, playing with the stitches, food getting in the wholes, etc. I went to rugby practice the same day (no contact) the same day and didn't need to take off time from school or anything. Played in a full rugby game 5 days later which was prob not the best idea lol. If you're lucky you shouldn't swell up too bad. its not as bad as people are making it sound. Just make sure you don't get infected or dry sockets.
|
The amount of pain and how long it takes varies by person.
But when I had all four of my teeth out they didn't knock me out (just numbed the shit out of my mouth and let me listen to my ipod) and then handed me each tooth as they went. After 2 hours of so when my mouth wasn't numb anymore the pain wasn't anything too terrible. I didn't take the pain meds they gave me and wish I hadn't wasted the money filling that perscription.
By day 2 I was eating normally again with hardly any pain.
Although, I have had friends who have taken weeks to recover and complain of horrible terrible insane pain and are downing pain killers like candy.
Different for everyone, So I hope yours is an easy recovery!
|
mm..it's been about 7 months since I got my four wisdom teeth removed..and my lower left jaw is still numbish from the procedure. I guess they did one up on me!
|
Pulling all 4 later this summer... If they don't gimme general anesthesia I better not feel anything.
Too bad, I'm going to miss weeks worth of good eating in Korea... bleh.
|
I just got mine out earlier this summer. I was a bit nervous at the time too, but I was surprised at how easy and painless it was. Glad to hear that it went well; enjoy your Vicodin and SC replays!

heya,
got my wisdom teeth out earlier in the year, all 4 of the buggers... puked like there was no tomorrow for ~20 minutes coming around from being knocked out... that was nasty, blood and vomit everywhere... sounds like you missed out on that, lucky bugger some advice, dont watch comedy shows.... baaaaaaaaad idea... anything that makes you smile/laugh, stay away from! as long as you dont move your jaw, you'll be fine, i found that mine just ached rather than hurt (if that makes sense?) and as long as i wasnt moving my jaw around, it wasnt too bad hope all goes well with no complications!
edit: took me ~2-3 days before i could eat things like pasta/fish, but after a week i got stuck into a nice steak, 10 days after it all, was at a comedy festival it depends alot on how bad your teeth were initially as to how long it takes
|
i got 4 out at once with general anesthesia. i remember getting injected passing out and waking up after the procedure was over. i took one pain killer and then forgot to take more cause it didnt hurt. don't worry about it!
|
Ouch, that reminds me that I'm supposed to get mine pulled later this summer... dang it
|
I actually enjoyed my surgery. The put the laughing gas on me and I started to get high then they poked me with the needle to set up my IV and I was like EHHHH I DONT LIKE THAT IV then the surgeon was like just take some deep breathes, so I did. Then I was like MMMM I LIKE THIS LAUGHING GAS and he was like you're on a lot more than laughing gas now and then I remember thinking "I'm high as fuck" and then I passed out, woke up still pretty sedated with my head all bandaged up and then it was a couple weeks of oxys and np. I didn't really ever feel a lot of pain even when my oxys ran out. The worst part for me was the hunger, eating eggs and slimfast got annoying pretty quick. If you have someone to make a lot of soft food for you then it should be ez. Also the left side of my face swelled like 3x bigger than the right side so I was afraid something fucked up but it went away and everything healed fine so if that happens don't freak yourself out.
|
hope your procedure went as well as mine, i had 4 removed earlier today and it really isn't that bad. i have a bottle of vicodin here and i haven't even had to take one, the pain really isn't bad at all, just a little sore.
