Hey
This is a brief story about my time on TL, and how i've been a damned fool.
(Ahem)
I joined Team Liquid in May 2004. As a starcraft player, I was never great – always too slow and focussed on theory crafting. Between 2005-2009 I did not play much, focussing on studying and my personal life – but still always found time to read the site and post on it – continually being impressed by the strength of the community. Last year I got back into the game for a while, hitting D+ on Iccup consistently, but not quite being able to reach the lofty heights of C-
Currently I live and teach in China, and while I am not playing SC here, I’m reading TL more than ever. It’s a great place– providing an intelligent look at nearly every subject, plus lots of great one liners and starcraft references. Of course there’s stupid shit posted, but it’s generally torn apart by someone smart, which is pretty reassuring.
On the downside, I’ve become increasingly aware how little I’ve contributed to the site. In fact looking back at my posts as a 17-19 year old is damned depressing. Beginning with absurd theory crafting about queens, I moved onto inexplicable praise of ‘the spirits within’, made indefensible criticism of chess and classical music, and posted mostly inane comments about everything else. This finally culminated in one of the worst posts I’ve ever seen by anyone, in which I utterly miss the point of starcraft itself, by not understanding that having to macro makes the game infinitely better. I then add insult to injury by writing like a nerd-raging ‘trying to be clever’ idiot :
The worst post ever
God I hate that writing style so much.
Since then education and life experience has generally improved what I’ve said – but even so, it’s all been very superficial - I’m yet to contribute anything worthwhile. What I’m trying to say, is that this first blog post marks the start of me trying to only post when I have something worthwhile to say. Or something like that.
At the very least, I'm sorry for my old posts.
(gets off soapbox).

hahah its aiite dude! no worries...everybody makes bad posts! even the best posters!
|
Good on ya. Compared to a TL regular you have a lot less posts, thus you directly have a lot less shit posts as well. So you're already ahead of me, for example, in overall post quality!

I was afraid of that.

Don't go anywhere!
We are looking forward to seeing what you post in the future.
I can be thankful there aren't many permanent records of the shit I did around 17-18. (I'm 31)
...also I continue to make stupid posts to this day. Learn to forgive yourself!

Hi fellow 老外,
Almost every point you make in your "worst post ever" is exactly what I hate about SC2 ! (off topic : and your thread made me discover than Idra's former account name was HungZerg ! )
On topic, I think it's totally normal to have that kind of feeling when you are looking back at your high school times once you've finished your studies. I used to be an admin of a big forum about RPGs when I was still in high school, and the forum eventually got hacked and we lost all the posts. I decided to close the forum as I had no time to devote to it. Then recently (5 years after we closed the forum) , I found a backup of the database on my external hard drive, and read some of my old posts. I expected to find my posts silly and superficial because of the maturity every teenager lacks of, but I was astonished to see how stupid I could be.
Anyway, welcome back to TL !
PS : Pokebunny is very wise for a 13 years old dude. Dunno what he will think about his posts in 5 years haha.

It's unreal how many of your suggestions are kinda in sc2. :/

I noticed the same thing, it's like you're one o' them psychiatrists or somethin..
:p

+ Show Spoiler [Contents of Worst Post Ever] +Regarding SC1 vs SC2 in 2005:
4: You should be able to select all your units at the same time. The first thing I noticed when playing was that I could only pick 12 units. This is unneccessary in the extreme. Smart players will naturually split their units into groups to let them micro better and flank well etc. But when I build 100 lings, it would be nice to send them in one instant wave without having to give myself rsi to do so.
5: When all your units are selected, you should be able to use all their individual hotkeys. I can't think of a reason not to. Oh and you should be able to customise your hotkeys.
6: The map should be already revealed but in fog of war, so you know where everything is on an unfamilliar map. This just makes sense, and would encourage more varied maps being used. You're really Dustin Browder, huh?

OMG I've never noticed this about SC2 before!
And on-topic: I often had similar feelings when I think of my forum posts when I was younger (not on tl.net). But then I realised that what I did when I was younger is all part of learning and growing up. If I had never made silly mistakes, in my way of thinking or my language ability, I may not have learnt a better way of posting. There is no need to beat yourself up over something you did in the past, especially since it was neither a sin nor a crime that you had committed!

The more you post the more fun it is though regardless if it is "meaningful" or not. Unless you're theory crafting or something...just let loose and enjoy it. Cmon, you don't hesitate to not say anything in front of your friends if its not witty right?? Well do the same here but just be more critical as in if its even on topic at least and doesn't sound fucked up/ douchey. as long as you add anything to this site in terms of a post (long or short) you are still contributing.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
I guess it's just disturbing to have perfectly preserved accounts of the person I used to be - certainly shatters any attempt to look at things with rose tinted glasses. And of course part of the fun is just posting however you feel - I'll still do that, but hopefully with more insight, and also combine that with longer, much better thought out contributions.
Regarding the SC2 predictions, I haven't played the beta, but have been following it. So yeah, actually it's kind of worrying that my 18 year old naive self should have predicted/asked for some of the criticised changes in SC2. I guess naive 18 year old geeks are the ideal target audience :S At least with the macro mechanics like the mule/inject larvae/chrono boost, they haven't gone all the way to killing macro. And the fog of war thing is actually ok.
Cheers

Oh think you made a bad post? My first blog was the biggest epic fail. If you check it out please don't say anything... I just can't stand how dumb it was lol.

lol! Yeah thats the line that caught my attention too.
Dont worry too much about it. Past is the past, but its good you can learn and improve on it.
Kind of eery how a raging 17 yr old kids post 5 years ago is so close to sc2 :D

Just be glad you don't have 5000 embarrassing posts like I do. I hope to sweet baby Jesus my real name and my TL account are never known to be the same person. Which means it probably wasn't so smart to go to the Ottawa LAN :X Oh well.
The internet and forums are the worst thing ever created. It's like a permanent document of your stupidity as you grow up and mature.
