I just came back from the bank, after depositing the monetary gifts that I got from my graduation party. It just feels unreal that people are so generous. $50.00 is very generous in my opinion, and some people matched that or gave more. I saved the card from my well-off summer neighbors for last because they are like family to me, but it was still a jaw-dropping shock to find a $500.00(!!!) check in their card. It's all just incredible to me.

Oh wow, you must know some people with mighty big wallets or mighty big hearts! I got $80 from my cousin once. ^_^
|
Both in that case, the next highest was $100, and even that is really, really awesome.
|
I raked in about $1,500 last year from my open house, which went towards my laptop for school. I sent everyone thank-you cards, so make sure you do that because they gave you some of their hard earned money.
|
Lol, I got $100 TOTAL from my family for graduating college. fml LOL!
|
I definitely agree, graduations are special
I got a 3 or 4 hundred dollar camera for graduation from our lifetime family friends and I almost fell down
you'll understand someday when your best friends' kid graduates!
|
|
wow...so much cash...graduations are special and that just helps to make it moreso by truly showing they care ^___^
|
Dang, all I got from graduation was ... lets see ... nothing cept for a family dinner. Thats always a good thing ^^
|

To all the people that said they got nothing. Did you have an open house and invite hundreds of people? Send out mail, and give cards away at school?
|
It probably has way more to do with the level of their income than the level of their generosity.
Probably.
I also got nothing for graduation but i definitely didn't deserve anything either LOL

People on TL gave me over 500 dollars total to help me with my rent when I was really down in the dumps. I have spent the past year paying people back. Generosity is one of the greatest virtues.

Yes. Your perception skews their generosity haha. Not to rain on the parade at all because I love where your head is at. But I think generosity is more like giving you my last loaf of bread when we are both hungry. Not as much giving you a loaf of bread when I have 100 in reserve.
Though there is a lot to be said for people helping out when you need help, and not just when it is convenient.
|
I always try to be as generous as possible. Even when I don't have money to give I share what I have (broke ass college student here) with the people around me. Sometimes they don't express appreciation, sometimes they do. But it makes it all the more worth it when they do.

This is slightly misleading...the generosity of family and friends is incredible, not so much from people in general imo.

So, how are you going to spend your newfound fortune??

One time someone at a Tim Horton's drive through - in front of me in line - paid for his breakfast, and mine.
I got to the window and the employee said; "They guy ahead of you paid for your meal, along with his"
|
I too got a check for 500 dollars for graduating. At the time, it was the most money I had ever had at once. I remember reading the number and not knowing what to say lol

The structure of the post made me laugh.

I wasn't aware people did that.

I've heard people try to do that seeing if it'll cause a chain reaction. A lot of the time then the next person (you in this case) would pay for the meal of the person behind you, and so forth.
Then it'll inevitably end with someone who's like "sweet, free meal," when the person says "the last 25 drivers have paid for the person before them, would you like to as well?"

...I got a sweater when I graduated =) You mean people were supposed to give me money? T_T
|
My best friend's dad gave me a thousand dollars when I graduated. I was in shock. I used the money to go on vacation with his son, heh
|
Personally I find receiving money for graduation bizarre... I never really asked for money and then I just get a bunch for doing nothing. I gave it away.
|
$300 from my auntie who lives in Canada ^_^
|
So how are you gonna display your generosity now?

never be too generous
if you are, people are inclined to try and take it for granted rather than respect it
|
got nothing for graduation, gf's dad offered me $2k, but I declined =\ (so my parents wouldn't have to reciprocate and then some)

I don't understand this, how do they know how much to pay? Do they just overpay and the cashier keeps the change?

So what, if I have 100 loaves of bread that I worked for, you're expected to get one? It's generousity whether I have a million extra or none. Your ass could starve.

I'll get my own bread if you're so stingy you expect someone to kiss your ass for one of a million loaves of bread. They're gonna go bad before you can eat them all anyway! When I have plenty, and I have guests, I consider it standard and expected to let them enjoy what I have. When I have only a little, I share it with just people I like. So yeah, there are a lot of level's of generosity, and giving a little when you have a lot is almost an insult on that scale. It IS an insult if you pat yourself on the back for doing it.

Who said kiss ass? I'm just saying you don't say 'man, that's all you gave me' when someone hands you something for free.
