So just to give you some background on this blog post, I have been an assistant manager at a nice restaurant for quite some time now. Almost 2 years. It's a decent job, but I see (even in this horrible jobless economy) so many people still taking it for granted and acting like they are mistreated. Guess what, stop playing the victim.
So there was a girl who would display her emotional problems often, freak out, tell people she would cover their shifts and not show up, and she would commonly complain about everything about the job and everyone. She would also say all of us managers are not being fair, especially the store manager because she didn't get as many hours as the other cashiers. Guess what, it was her fault. When you make decisions that make you a less than desirable employee to spend labor on, we give you less hours, simple as that. When you make yourself into that position you need to make a comeback, or you are on your way out, or seen as a lesser employee on the scheduling priority. She wasn't even that good a worker.
The other example is a girl who got in trouble with the law, gave us a huge problem, and we still gave her the chance because she had shown lots of effort to learn more and do more within the job and covered for people. She then started to do the same thing and be less than reliable to the company. Her hours were reduced, she was outraged saying all those things were emergencies, well emergency or not, we do this to EVERYONE. Now she goes around on facebook and talks trash about our establishment. I just have to vent here, since I do care about her, but I get pissed off that she is acting like she was a victim. She did it all to herself.
Hopefully some of you can get some knowledge from this, right now, the economy is bad. If you don't like yoru job, suck it up and be an ADULT and just go to work and do your job. If there is some harassment report it properly if it bothers you, don't try to take it into your own hands. If your hours are down, ask why, and if they tell you, take it as advice that you can use and information to make a change so you can get hours again! Why are all these people thinking that a company owes them hours, owes them a job, despite whatever actions they have taken before.

damn dude that sucks that you have to put up with these people, but dont let them get to you! in the end, youre the assistant manager, youre above them, you give them their hours, you decide if they get a raise (well partially decide right?). there will always be unreasonable people like them who wanna make your life miserable, but by being happy and calm even when they lash out at you and do things behind your back, you are doing exactly whats best for you and exactly what they do not want you to do.

fire them bitches... a business is a business, not a charity. if they complain and don't like their job, let them go.
edit: complaining about your work on facebook is about as unprofessional as it gets

You can tell them that you don't like what they are posting on facebook if it bothers you a lot. You don't need to though, just a suggestion.
These employees of yours are just people and as such they will always find something to complain about. If their hours are long, they won't compare themselves to the unemployed living below the poverty line in other countries, they'll compare themselves to Rachel, who became a nurse and now makes tons more money.
If they blame themselves for the state of their lives, they will only feel worse, so they blame you. Meh.
I'm just trying to understand why your employees do this.

I "interned" as a prep chef at a Houstons (nice restaurant chain) for about 5 months. I'm not sure if it was because it was a chain but hours seemed to be fairly distributed between waitresses. The only thing that irked me was the job distribution. All the white people were in management or in good kitchen positions and everyone else was latino. Just really pissed me off that the chain didn't provide opportunity for the employees to progress(some of these guys had been there like 10 years with no raise or promotion). I mostly felt bad because it was so easy for me to get the job(had hookups) which all of them were so nervous about loosing.

Yeah, this is a serious problem with this lazy generation of people. A lot of them don't feel like they need to work at their job. Most I have worked with feel they are entitled to the highest pay scale right off the bat as well. They are lazy, they complain, they think that work hours are their personal freedom to do whatever they want hours, and lastly but not least they don't want to work the weekend hours because they need to be at the lake all the time or out with their friends. The future is a very scary place because of the attitude of the majority of these younger folks in the work place.
