Hey there, it's me again and today I got one simple question: If a player, who just knows the basic of SCBW, decides to go for ICCUP and learn the game within 6 months, what would be your advice? Or do you even have some kind of step by step plan in mind?

Cheers

-Mass games-
-Watch your replays, see your mistakes
-Don't play if you are getting tired
-Learn buildorders

Learn how to recognize Korean players, no really

That means if you want to get totally raped, than play vs someone with country tags [KR]

Additionally try to find a clan to join, or just some friends. If you play versus someone who is not just there to pwn you and get the points, then they'll give you hints and pointers of where you can improve, and it lets you advance much quicker.

Also if you play Terran, then watch and learn EVERY SINGLE StylishVOD PM me or come to "op [shock]" GL HF man

And YOU MUST ALWAYS GG, no exceptions
BW4LYF . . . . . . PM me, I LOVE PMs. . . . . . Long live "NaDa's Body" . . . . . . Fantasy | Bisu/Best | Jaedong . . . . .

you should play fastest and learn the tech tree, hotkeys, units, and spells in a week

then play low money maps lik hunters and feel yourself doing 1a2a1t2t

and pick a race
1. Zerg = easiest to win with
2. Protoss = simplest race, very straight-forward.
3. hardest to win with on the low-levels, requires about 3x P's skill level and about 6x Z's focus level

learn some basic build orders for each matchup (2gate works in any Pv matchup) and practice

make sure to look at your reps and jot down things like why you lost, what you could have done better, and just fix all the holes in your game

its important to understand what your opponent is probably doing as you play a game, to focus on your macro, and have a general idea (plan) for what you are going to do as you progress throughout the course of the game

i started a few months ago and easily worked my way up to d+/c-, although its a struggle to maintain

some general tips

1. try to learn some basic unit counters (like dropped zeals > siege tanks, goons > vults etc.)
2. constant production of units will win you the game when you aren't trying to tech up/expand.
3. koreans are good, but not all of them are pros - many are the same level as you so don't overestimate them

These are good ideas. Also, watching pro games/Day[9] and asking for advice on TL could be very helpful.

Liquipedia is an INCREDIBLE resource. Simply spending a week on there brought my play up from a LOW D to a high D+!

Don't play fastest if you're looking to get better at normal economy maps.
Don't play versus the computer unless your intention is to memorize a build order and/or improve your mechanics overall.

Pick your race depending on what you feel like is the most fun one. Try them and watch some professional games on YouTube to get a feel on how the races work and what styles each usually represent. Don't pick a race depending on how 'easy' it is, having fun while studying the game results in you getting better much more efficiently.

Play as much as you can. After a session take a look at the replays you were most confused about, learn why you lost and make a mental note about what you did wrong. If you can't figure out TeamLiquid is here to help.

Don't forget Day[9] started in BW, look up some of his older episodes and you can find very helpful content.

Liquipedia for build orders. TeamLiquid Strategy Section if you have problems with them, make sure to read the strategy forum guidelines first though.

Recommended threads on the strategy section! They are extremely useful for a learning player. You will want to read these multiple times as you become more familiar with how the game works, you'll be able to understand the concepts. Liquipedia for build orders. If you have problems with a match up, then use the search function for advice on it before making a thread (make sure you're in BW strategy too)

i think the most important bit is, whichever race you pick, use only ONE standard macro build order for each matchup, again and again

and dont do any allin shit, it might make you feel good momentarily but youre not gonna be actually learning

pick the race that's the most fun for you, you don't want to spend your time learning it and then end up hating the shit out of one of your MU's

If you are serious about improving - that is within those six months you want to reach C- and above, I would recommend the following:

* You should get really into starcraft. Play as much as you can and when you can't think about it. Think about build orders, timings and the games you lost trying to analyze why you lost them. The more you put into it the more you will improve.

* D-/D/D+ is all about macro. Macro macro macro!!

* Definitely this. Pick one standard macro-oriented build order for each matchup. No cheese no funky stuff.

* Try to erase all the preconceptions you may have about the game/its difficulty/your skill etc. I find that your hand speed and understanding of the game can improve more rapidly than you think they can. Try to create the mindset that there is no limit to your speed and that you can win every game you play.

Bahahahaha... Why do people always forget that Terran has vultures and legal maphack (comstat)? If anything, Terran is easier to play at a lower level because most people don't have the game sense yet to make up for no comstat.

OP, if the person you're talking about is you, I would advice you don't. Just play for fun when you feel like it. Sure it's fun to look around at strategies and focus on being a better player, but you seem to be suggesting playing for hours a day just to be better at a game.... This is a waste of time.

iCCup will only make you better at playing ladder... It won't make you better at StarCraft in general anyway. The best way to get better at SC is to find an active clan.

i think good general advice for all things apply to sc as well. keep your number one priority to have fun and make it about the learning experience. aim to improve specific skills, don't set yourself up for a ranking or win percent goal, focus on the intrinsic rewards of mastering new abilities.
