As a hardcore anime fan I usually have the obligation to say that English dubbed anime are horrible. However, as I stumbled on this random video on Youtube my opinion changed somewhat.

At 3:23 : "No man it's gonna be her..."

Now, I don't want to argue about using Japanese honourifix in an English dub (I don't personally mind); my point is that the English dub, for the first time in my life, actually sounded pretty good.

+ Show Spoiler +
Maybe I should keep an open mind about everything in the world.

I dont know why most people are snobbish about english dubs, I find most animes to be dubbed perfectly fine. Not that one though, its terrible. Both the anime and the dubs.

dubs are terrible in any language b/c they can never recapture the mood of the original.
(I think the best example is dubbed chinese movies)

English dubs are mostly horrible because they totally miss the meaning and messages that the original voices give. There are a few exceptions though and sometimes the dub is better than the original (I really enjoyed dubbed DB and DBZ).

If you understand even a tiny bit of the language in it's original format it's easy to hate dubs.

In Japan voice acting is srs biz and many people want to make it but dont - over here people are like "voice acting? wut?".

Not being a weabo douchetard but the emotive quality of the japanese voice acting is usually 10000x better than EU/US equivalents and the feel of a character is often completely different going from one to the other.

Some of the dubs I actually enjoyed were Berserk(medieval england fits more with english voices rather than the more high pitched Japanese language), and the Kenshin prequel OVA.

The movies are rather well dubbed too, i.e Miyazaki movies.

I usually dislike dubs. When i first started watching anime i watched mostly dubs but now i almost never watch dub.

Like few months ago I watched GiTS dub because i downloaded them from torrent and didnt notice that all episodes were dubs so i didnt wanted to download subs again -.- ... i watched both seasons dubbed and it didnt seem bad at all.

i preffer english dubbes, this way i dont have to read and miss everything. Main reason, when im going to bed and i have naruto shippuuden hooked up to my 42inch tv it sucks that I cant just fall asleep to the english, and it keeps me up trying to read.

I usually enjoy english dubs, like Evangelion, but sometimes they get screwed up and entire plot lines are gone, like FLCL.

Dubs just seem too unnatural for bilingual speakers especially(i.e 80% of the Asians in TL probably :p) , some things are very culture specific and there isn't an equivalent of its meaning and context in another language. There some good dubs for anime out there for sure, but even if they are well done people like me will prefer the original because it sounds more normal to us.

Chinese dubs for anime on the other hand are absolutely horrific, all the females sounds too similar and they always sound terribly exaggerated and annoyingly high pitched.

most of the time i acctully prefer subbed over dubbed. but for anime's like code geass the subbed voices were like some guy beating a sack of babbies with a cat.

I prefer subs.

I feel they take anime acting much more seriously (compared to dubbers). A lot of times the quality is just low, and has nothing to do with preference or capturing cultural/mood stuff. This is clear if you've seen GOOD dubs, or any well- acted cartoons in general.. its quite good if they actually try. Its getting better though.

The other issue is pronouncing foreign words. Some will disagree with me on this, but I prefer a middle accent, instead of purely Americanizing a word or purely authentic pronunciation. I dont like the abrupt shift in accents. But that's something people do irl too, so its kind of common and not everyone dislikes it.

PS: omg I'm glad someone mentioned English Golden Boy before i did lol.

I really dislike anime, it embarrasses me x_x
However, there is one series I actually liked, which was the old Hellsing one. Also has a great soundtrack btw. But the english/german synchronization really makes it seem so cheap.

Comparison japanese/english:
Mainy I mean Alucard's voice, around 4:30 in the first video.

I think it's a waste to watch dubs. The japanese voice actors are superior in so many ways and a lot more talented. (It's serious business in Japan.)

I never watch dubs, never! Not neccesarily because their un-watchable, but because there is just something much better offered.

I used to be sub-only, but there is a case to be made for dubs.

One of the problems I have with subs is that it magnetizes your eyes to the bottom of the screen. You can't really take it in as well. I've watched dramas with no subs and there's just a completely different feeling you get when you don't have to read the bottom. You actually pay more attention to what's on screen. I didn't realize how bad Japanese acting was until I turned off subtitles.

I don't watch anime anymore, but I feel like I would rather play most games dubbed rather than subbed.

I felt Princess Mononoke was better dubbed. But that's the only one I can remember where I felt that it was better.

Pretty much this, I only watch certain dubs because it's hilarious. But really, I think dubs take away too much of the original feel, some end up kinda decent, but nothing compares to the original. Also, in some countries they always "translate" or change the OP and ED entirely, and this annoys me to no end.

Speaking of dubs, watch this: http://www.teamfourstar.com/

I agree with you, and I know more Japanese than you think. However, the point is merely that English dubs are not all bad.

its not that dubbing in general is bad

its the voice actors that are, frankly, fucking terrible. OP's video for example, I'd rather not have squeaky voiced mice doing dubs.

Japanese anime voice actor are just really really good, i think its most likely because being a voice actor in japan is something like a full-time job like a real actor or some sort...

i just avoid english dub like the plague just to spare my ears.

I dislike English dubs because the voice actors don't put enough emotion into the voices. They also sometimes miss the point when acting a characters personalities. I remember I watched the trailer for English of spice and wolf and the character did not sound tsundere at all :/. I did enjoy DBZ dubs though.

I've always liked the GitS subs.

I think the english vocal actor for Kusanagi is quite good. I also remember Bebop having good dubs as well. Can't recall any others though.

I don't mind English dubs. Good anime usually puts an effort to get legit dubs, same as with legit subs. I also don't like having to read while watching because I am already spending 100% making sure I see everything on the screen. Plus, I am not a fan of how some of the non-English actors sound.
