Alright, google. I've used your search engine for 12 years. In 1998, I switched from webcrawler to google beta because it was infinitely better. And for the better part of 12 years, you remained better than the competition. You made some optional changes, like having google be a huge portal page like yahoo and the like, but you could still default to just the search box and the logo.
Then, a couple months ago, you decided that your user base must be aging and losing their vision and motor skills. To combat this, you made everything BIGGER: the font (so I can see what I type, since I obviously stare at the keyboard while I type and have 20/200 vision), the buttons (so I can still click on "search" with my horrible case of Parkinsons' and inability to just press ENTER), and maybe even the logo (since my Alzheimer's made me forget which site I was visiting).
But that wasn't enough, so you decided to remove the links to your other searches (news, images, etc), and have them load through a script when you move your mouse. Two problems. 1) I block almost all javascript, ESPECIALLY anything from a domain with the phrase "google" in it. 2) I actually know how to use the tab key and the keyboard, and it's retarded for me to have to bump the mouse just so the links I wish to access can appear. Luckily using the greasemonkey add-on to firefox, I could get the size of the font and buttons back, but I still had to either not have access to google images, or allow javascript and go out of my way to bump the mouse.
Well you've topped yourself yet again. Since my aging eyes can no longer read 24pt font, you've wisely increased it to 24pt BOLD. You know what? I use bing cash back on just about everything I buy online, as it's most always included in the best deals from reputable vendors. I think I'll try their search engine for a while too, and see how that works out. Perhaps I'll come back when you give us the option of not having your home page retardedly huge just so people who can't even see well enough to drive can use it more easily (yes, that was their only reason for changing it, according to them - apparently they don't know Windows and Mac OS can already do this for ALL your programs). Otherwise, hopefully for your ad revenue's sake, someone will make a new script so I can use your search engine as I could 12 years ago: without wanting to stab you.

I am over it. I'm using bing.com. Also, you didn't read my post.

Wow I can't believe this can make you rage lol.

you'll be back to google in no time
can't you just zoom out?

This bothers you? Font being too big? I don't know what to tell you man, just relax and learn to live with it. Its not like it makes the page cluttered or awkward to use.
As far as the other searches, I can almost see why that would be annoying, but seriously all you have to do is move your mouse, like, a pixel. It's not that hard to do. If these things make you rage like this I would hate to see what happens to you in situations that are less trivial.

big font is stupid, why are u an scv?

Actually, moving my hands off the keyboard over to the mouse then back is pretty pointless just so they can have a "cool" fade in effect. Also, I didn't realize there were so many Romanians on TL.

Another day, another problem you didn't know existed.

Doesn't blocking the js just make the links appear normally?

But then the cursor doesn't default to the search box, and I have to tab like 9 times before I do a search.
|
Hi LonelyMargarita how are you?
|
I'm not used to using google.com since I get redirected to google.ca and the pages are a bit different. I'm checking out google.com right now and I don't see this bump to trigger javascript thing, also I see a top bar that is text based with the 'Images Videos Maps News ...' links so no mousing to the pretty icons is necessary. How can I see this bump mouse javascript effect you are talking about?
edit: Oh I see, you're talking about the javascript on the main page for the fade effect. I thought you were talking about on the results page.

Lol. Hit tab.
If you are so worried about switching back to mouse hand just hit tab after you enter your search field if you would like to get stuff to fade in. No mouse movement required.
If you are blocking javascript and it is causing an issue that is your problem not theirs. You blocking javascript makes you a non-standard user, so you get to deal with it, too bad.

edit: Did some more testing in IE, it's not actually any slower, looks like the search is done in the same way.

All of the changes can easily be included as options in an individual user's preferences, and be of no cost to google since it stores your settings as cookies. This would allow everyone to have the settings they like the best, so they don't have to cater simply to the average user (who can barely operate a computer).
I probably am in a very, very small percentage of users that uses the keyboard far more often than the mouse. I run litestep, so all of my applications are launched by hotkeys, as opposed to using the mouse and clicking on icons. I despise sites that don't default the cursor to the main search box (weather.com, I'm looking at you). It's just upsetting that all of the changes are at the cost of users who know what they're doing being able to do things efficiently. The new column on the left of the results page actually bothers me more than the font size, the bold, the button size, or the javascript. Why do you need those links there? They're already along the top. Why not put more of the same links on the right side and the bottom too?
I've also been looking for reasons to not use google anymore anyway, because of how evil they are becoming with privacy and politics, etc. I'll still use google for some searches, but I'll probably make about:blank, bing, or google.ca my home page for a while and see how they work out.

Google is a business, of course they cater to the lowest common denominator, for most everyone else using standard browsing the page is better for them.

If you really want to have a specific homepage that doesn't change then create the html yourself.

The world doesn't revolve around you. Google made the change because it serves the masses better. If you don't like it, there's many other search engines out there in the web where you can find your niche.

I collect google's logos. I've been to their page pretty much every day for the last 12 years, and saved the logos since the beta. OCD did it. I actually stopped a couple weeks ago just to see if it bothered me, and it didn't. If you haven't figured it out by now, this is not a super serious huge important issue blog. I still have valid points re: the new side bar and not making these changes toggle-able (since they will not increase their revenue). They might not be a huge issue, but you know a multi-billion-dollar corporation is spending MASSIVE amounts of money and putting TONS of time into deciding upon these changes. From a financial standpoint, most of them don't seem to make sense.

Post of a screenshot of your crazy fonts? Everything is fine for me. Not even close to 24 point and not bolded.

Er... if you want to make it smaller can't you just do that by using ctrl+scroll? Yea old people COULD make it bigger themselves but the fact that they turned the monitor on is impressive, let's not get carried away.

so you want to go to google images from your keyboard? Can't you just go to google.com/images? Focuses on the search bar at load up as well.
edit: btw, this only seems to affect firefox. The google stuff is huge on on firefox, but regular size on opera, chrome, safari and even internet explorer. None of the other ones have the bold font either.
Also, if you want you can set your homepage to the firefox start page: http://www.google.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:es-MX:official
It's basically google, even the script loads right away without the need to move the mouse.

The issue is that they removed the ability to toggle the column. There used to be a "hide options" so then just your search results displayed below the "Results 1-100 of..." line. I could always click on "shopping" or "images" on the top if I decided I wanted to view those pages instead. I don't need the links on the top AND the side. If you want to see the changes, compare a search from google.com to one from google.ca. The changes also go against their minimalistic, clean style they've always had.
This thread is actually becoming somewhat useful with people posting alternate keyboard shortcuts for things. I can't use them since I already programmed them to do other things, but I'm sure others can.

The main purpose of using google's page instead of a search bar is for the "I'm feeling lucky." It's easy for me to hotkey open my browser to google.com, type a phrase, tab, tab, enter, and I'm at a desired page without any mouse use.
As for searching for images, the best way I know is just to open google with my hotkey (ctrl-z), type in the search term, enter, tab, enter, and it will go to the image search results page. I could of course add more hotkeys to open a browser to different pages, but I'd have to use harder-to-reach hotkeys or remap other ones.
As was mentioned, I should just take the 15 minutes to code my own google home page that grabs their image, defaults to search box cursor, and only has the links I use, for easy TABing. I'd still have to deal with the new column on the results page unless I wanted to write a script to hide that as well. This is what I should do. I instead chose to write a blog. What can ya do?

Years ago, most screens had larger pixels that today. Amazing, isn't it? So increasing the font size etc. just keeps the absolute size similar.
