Yesterday was a shitty day - I totally fucked up on my organic chemistry test and was pretty disappointed with myself. It's one thing to do poorly when you don't try or really care all that much, but I've been studying really hard and this time around things just haven't worked out. Makes me feel pretty stupid I guess. Hopefully I will be able to turn things around though with the final blah blah blah. My ex, who dumped me a month ago, also texted me and even though it's been that long it's still really weird. We haven't talked at all and I don't know if I even want to before she leaves for the entire summer. It was my first relationship and it was sort of serious so it hasn't been very easy. But anyways, to SC2, which made my day today amazing!
After following R1CH's betakey challenge #4 last night and failing miserably along with the 100+ people that also seemed to be F5ing every 4 seconds, my hopes were bleak. I figured I would have to follow TL very closely and get really lucky in some random contest to pick up a key. That or shell out an ungodly amount on ebay. And I really didn't want to do that. And that's when the gamestop thread showed up! Unconfirmed rumors that GS was giving out keys with preregister of a copy gave me a huge burst of hope. I called up my campus gamestop the next morning and at first the guy said they hadn't gotten any in, but I should preorder the collectors edition ASAP because it would probably sell out. When I went in after class he told me that they were giving keys! $10 down on the collectors edition and I fire it up to install.
After being disconnected a bunch and having my find game button glitch, I am up in my very first beta game TvP. I see his probe come in early and it hides in the side under fog - proxy gateways incoming. I have very little SC knowledge and no SC2 knowledge really so I have no idea what to do... send SCVs to attack gateway? Ignore and micro with marines? Bunker? He gets both gateways up and I clumsily try to throw up a bunker in front of them as my first marine comes out. He kills it, and the marine, with his next 2 zealots. gg - I'm out and off to a fun start. I end up doing well the next few games - I was against total scrubs though with the extra destructible rocks and watch towers.
On to my matchmaking! Even being a complete D- scrub I somehow go 4-1, beating a turtling terran, a zergling/baneling door buster push, and 2 standard protoss. The last guy, zryyyy?, just played better and killed me with a straight up attack. Into gold I go It would have been pretty funny if I went into platinum not knowing anything but I'm happy with gold. The game as a whole seems more accessible, maybe because of automine/mbs, but it might just be clicking better.
I find that even after watching vods and other casts a good amount that playing is a totally different matter. I have a general build order in my head - supply, barracks, refinery, orbital command - but after that I kind of just go with the flow. I've had good results with reaper harass against T/P and banshees against everyone. I think my biggest problems right now are forgetting depots and not having a cohesive game plan. I end up with 5 rax, 2 fac, and like 4 starports and I need to have a better unit combo in mind.
So I finished up at 9-3 and now I'm off to bed. This was my first blog... I hope it wasn't too boring.
