Replay 1 - PvZ - Wow, ICCup rankings are so random; this guy was 1500 D, yet pretty much felt like a D- noob. Not much to say, scouted his 3 hatch muta, made 3 or 4 cannons in main, added 1 in nat; then pretty much steamrolled him.

Replay 2 - PvT - This guy was C-. Gets a bunch of vults in, getting a ton of probe kills, and then I get completely annihalated when I engage his push. I'm starting to feel like i have a fundamental problem with fighting Terran as I seem to come out of a ton of fights losing my whole army for some vults and a tank or two.

Replay 3 - PvP - Felt things thing were going okay, scouted his shuttle and reavers, had the obs tacking it; but didnt realize that he was going for a full attack instead of harassing, and I had just placed my goons to prepare for harass so I ended up losing.

Replay 4 - PvP - A WTF game. Guys does like a 12 nex so I'm not really sure what to do. I try to go 4 gate goon to kill him, but the BO execution is no existent and I naturally end up losing.

Replay 5 - PvT - Not happy about this one. He pushed out with marines and a couple tanks with siege, I work him back picking off a few marines, but he gets a sieged position. His positon was annoying because it was between my and my third, so I didn't get it till a bit later than I wanted.I add a few gates, and go to break his position, which I do pretty well. Unfortunately, I made pure zeal for too long, and didn't really have anything to deal with his vultures, and I ended up losing when I was in an okay position.

Ah, ICCUP can be so frustrating at times, I'm like 5-23 or something this season, and I'm pretty damn sure I'm not that bad. Alot of it probably has to do with the fact that I play mostly Korean hours; and I play all comers, which means I've had alot of games against people who are D+ and up, or at D, but really higher than that. Even being aware of that it's still frustrating to consistently get demolished in games.

Basically, up till quite recently, my focus has been on getting mechanics and macro up to speed, and I feel like I've pretty much acheieved that. If I'm consistently above like 500 or 600 minerals in the mid-late game, it's a pretty off game, and I typically have around 200 APM, of which I don't feel an absurd percentage is spam.

So, getting to the heart of the matter, I just feel now like I don't have anything to work on; or rather, that I don't know how to work on it. Maybe it's compounded by playing people consistently better than me, but I just don't feel like I understand how to get better. I don't know when/where/how/why to attack, how to delpoy my army in the field, reacting to scouting beyond the early game, etc.

So for those of you that have a better understanding, how did you go about learning these things, obviously liquipedia's a pretty decent resource that I'll be pouring over, but much of that advice is very general, ands its stuff I've heard and know, but aside from that where do I go. I'm pretty confident I have the mechanics to get to C-, but I don't have a clue what it is I need to work on, much less how to work on it, to get there.

Watch lots of games. Analyse your replays and watch what your opponents who beat you did. If you need help with a specific problem, try uploading rep and posting it on TL asking for help. You'll get a bunch of help from the gosu strategy forum people.

What race do you play and what are some typical ways you lose games?

Think about why you lose games.. do you get outmacroed? Do you get run over by timing pushes? Do you lose units needlessly? Do you forget to scout hidden expos? etc.

"I don't know when/where/how/why to attack, how to delpoy my army in the field, reacting to scouting beyond the early game, etc."
When: your army is stronger than your opponent's
Where: the least defended place
How: in a way that maximize your kills and minimizes your losses (this really depends on the MU you're playing)
Why: pressure, maintaining economic advantage, keeping your opponent contained

How to deploy your army in the field: in the widest arc possible if you outnumber your opponent or in a way so that the arc your opponent can make is limited. (e.g. PvT, you want to have a wide arc attacking as protoss and as T, you want to plant mines so that P will take heavy losses if he walks over the minefield)

Reacting to scouting beyond early game: adjust, adjust. Have a standard build which counters a typical standard build and get used to it. If you scout in game that your opponent has 2 extra production buildings or built them super fast, then you might choose to add production buildings of your own and cut workers. If you see them taking a quick extra base and you can't do anything about it, then go ahead and cut back on unit production and take your own expo if you feel you can get away with it. The key is to adjust your standard build to what your opponent is doing.

The way I play BW is mainly by reacting, adapting, and improving. It has its flaws, but I stuck to this and eventually got up above B+. So to answer that one question: "I don't know when/where/how/why to attack, how to delpoy my army in the field, reacting to scouting beyond the early game, etc." It will all come with time and experience. So just practice, practice and practice. Imo, don't overthink just do it play by play. GL! I know my tips aren't too detailed or that informative but that's how I taught myself, by keeping everything simple and working on the fundamentals. Anyways, if you have more problems, I will try to help you with my VAST VAST VAST bw knowledge :p.

yeah watch your replays, although I find i learn more watching proleague. It's important not just to watch the major fights, which really have little to do with losses at D/D+ level, but to watch where they move their army and why. how they are aware of their opponents movements, when they choose to backstab instead of engaging, how to buy time. Honestly the biggest issues for me are scouting consistently and macroing, but with D+ level macro i lose at D level only when i do something really stupid like misrally units like i did today, or if i lose track of their army or am not in position to backstab a protoss army that is too big for me to kill.

how's your game sense? from what you describe, you shouldn't have a tough time getting to C-, even C. out of pure guesswork, i assume you play turtle terran and just get raped every time you a-move to push out. that's seems to be the only way you can lose with solid mechanics. well until you provide more information and a replay or ten then we can't help you.

When you lose, try to ask your opponent why you lost, sometimes you need a different perspective. Maybe you think you know what's wrong but actually lack the experience to properly interpret the game.

Sounds like me D:
I also have 200 APM :D
I also don't spam, I would say my macro is pretty solid,
only during the beginning I spam and I get 350 but that part doesn't count
first when I started got 16-57 D-
last season got to low D 11-29 or something like that
this season... I cleared stat after going on 14 game losing streak

well, I try to harass with vultures, lay mines everywhere, and move siege tanks and position, but flanks come and kind of kill me
or I get too greedy or impatient and get caught out of position
or maybe I should stop playing on Python
"It's called a miracle because it doesn't happen" - Just like my chances of reaching C- on ICCUP

No offence guys but if your struggling at D rank you are piss poor.
I've been to B- with 2 races yet any real player would view me as pretty terrible.
I have no illusions about my skill.

Believe me if you have "solid" macro, 200apm etc etc you are NOT D player, and if you ARE D player, you do NOT have these attributes.
Speak properly, and in as few words as you can, but always plainly; for the end of speech is not ostentation, but to be understood.

Actually, all you require at the D level is game sense. I recommend Day[9]'s videos as they taught me quite a bit.

Everyone's macro at the D/D+ level is plain horrible. As long as you can attack and make the right units, you will be able to win.

stop making excuses and practice? yeah you've got the potential to get to C-... everyone has. but until you actually get there you'll always be a D- noob.

It would be really helpful if you could post a few replays so that we could give you specific tips.

That said, I got from D to D+ by learning a build order and improving my macro. This season I've worked my way through D+ and am a few games away from C-, and the biggest thing that I've worked on is scouting. That includes early game scouting for location and opening build, but more the thing that I've worked on harder is keeping track of when the army moves out, where it moves to, and any expansions that go up or harassment that comes out (drops etc). It's nice as Zerg because I can keep Overlords all over the map and suicide zerglings/scourge whenever I remember to; but with 200apm it shouldn't be a problem for you to continually move a scouting unit around the map to check expansions and army movement.

Feel free to bump me on iccup any time if you'd like a few practice games, since it seems like we're about the same level.

Well, i'm gonna post some reps today as I get them, so you can see some general trends in my play. I guess my biggest concern is trying to improve my scouting, and understanding better how to react to what I see.

Yeah man. getting to b+ should be really eazy. If your even struggeling to get to C- i would quit the game right away
