This list is purely of opinion. It would be awesome if you guys would contribute by posting your ideas of actors who did phenomenal jobs in the roles they were given.
What I mean by phenomenal job is that when you see them in that role, you have no clue of their actual identity. If you have no idea what I am talking about, check out my list.
Heath Ledger - Dark Knight
I think it is safe to say that this is probably one of the best acting jobs I have ever seen. What makes this role so creepy/amazing is that we have NO idea that this is the same man that played, Gabriel in the Patriot, or Will in Knights Tale, or even the guy from Brokeback Mountain. You watch this movie, and all you see is the role, Joker. Nevermind the actual movie itself, but the acting job is INCREDIBLE. Well played as the crazy psychopath clown. Amazing.
Robert Downy Jr. - Tropic Thunder
Holy shit that is Iron Man? I found his role SO FUCKING FUNNY. Seriously, this man does an amazing job being so fucking hilarious in the movie. Everytime he talks, I cant stop laughing. I am not being sarcastic, I am being totally serious. Robert Downy Jr. does an exceptional job at playing an actor, acting as another actor. Watching this, you cannot believe that this guy was also Iron Man. If you have not seen Tropic Thunder yet, I recommend you do MAINLY for Robert Downy Jr and for Tom Cruise. Speaking of which...
Tom Cruise - Tropic Thunder
My God Tom Cruise really blew me away. Maybe it was because I saw A Few Good Men before watching Tropic Thunder that made me really laugh. Tom Cruise does an amazing job as well playing his character in Topic Thunder.
'Nuff said.
Sharlto Copley - District 9
Now if I didn't say District 9, you would ask, "Who the fuck is that?" Hell I am not even going to lie, I wouldn't even know who he is if no one said District 9. I think the reason why he is so unknown is because that is pretty much his only acting role. Nonetheless, acting here really blew me away. Showing so much conviction and pain as his character Wilkus really sold me this movie. Now others may disagree that this movie was a piece of shit and that I am a flamming faggot, but you have to admit, your first job as acting and this is it? That is fucking crazy. Fun Fact, Copley had no intention of acting. He is in this movie just because he is friends with the director.
Kevin Spacey - Usual Suspects
Does an amazing job playing Verbal Kint in this film. His role in this is the reason why I am such a huge Kevin Spacey fan boy. Really does sell me his story and makes this movie so damn good.
Asa Butterfield - Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Now before you get all anal that I spelled "pyjamas" wrong, it is how the British spell it so fuck off. Also, people say, "wtf children cant act." The point of his role was to play a young child who was confused in the predicament he was in, and acting was GOOD for someone his age. I would see some other child fuck act and think, "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?" Butterfield does a great job in his role, and is on a path to become a great actor.
Ben Stiller - Simple Jack - Tropic Thunder
Only reason why I am putting this here because whenever he would play Simple Jack, I would laugh my ass off thinking, "Holy shit Ben stiller!"
-- Well that's it for now as I will update this when I watch more movies. I am sure some of you will disagree, and I could care less. Feel free to add your own input, add who you thought was a great actor, and to jack me off.
edit:
I was just reminded of two more actors I really enjoyed.
Barbara Stanwyck - Double Indemnity
Now you may never heard of this movie, but if it wasn't for my film class, I would never have heard of it either. Apart from the movie itself (which was fucking amazing wholly shit), she does a great job selling her role in the film + Show Spoiler +
con artist
. Beautiful on top, yet deceiving underneath, she played her role very well.
Humphrey Bogart - Casablanca
Now I am not that huge of a Humphrey Bogart or Casablanca fanboy, but oh-my-fucking-apple-tits, does he do a damn good job. Now I am not gay or anything, but when you watch this movie, look at Bogart's eyes. His eyes just give you the picture of a man who is so tired, worn down, and just wants to find peace but cant obtain it. His presence is so convicting, I would get a hard on (if I was gay) Really does his role well.
A lot of Tropic Thunder, looks like you just got done watching it and decided to post about how much you like it lol. Too many "newer" movies though IMO. Even though that doesn't really matter, actors are still pretty decent to what they used to be.
80's - 90's was the best years for movies, though if you can tolerate black and white there are a lot of fantastic movies from way earlier. Citizen Kane anyone?

I actually saw Tropic Thunder in the theater but just recently watched it again. I feel like people dont give it the recognition it deserves.
I havent touched on some of the movies I enjoyed from the 80-90's. But Citizen Kane however, I found very overrated. + Show Spoiler +
Apart from the acting which I found decent, I found that the whole "twist" of the movie regarding Rosebud was not that amazing. But I guess at the time it was considered balls dropping awesome. Personally, I did not really enjoy the movie all too much.

Well it wasn't the story and acting which really made it fantastic, though it was petty good. It was the fact that the movie is pretty much visually perfect. Some would even say revolutionary?
Anyone else annoyed at Johnny Depp yet? God I hate seeing him in movies now. IDK if it's just who he is, but he acts exactly like previous characters he's done. I just recently saw Alice, which was a terrible movie, and they may as well have put Depp's pirate character in this movie. That's who I thought I was watching the entire movie.
I agree with you on Gattaca. That movie is amazing. Robert Downey is always a great actor as well. Majority of the movies you see him in you get lost in his role and don't even know it's him. Saw A Scanner Darkly last night and everyone did a great job acting in that movie.
