guy has an idea to raise awareness/make a few bucks for a charity.

TL shits on his method.

???

Who cares if there are more effective ways to do this. THis is the way HE is doing it. If it raises 1 dollar that is more than what it would have raised had NOBODY done this. I can't believe the continual posting from a bunch of TL vets/regulars/mods in here about how bad his method was. Let someone do something nice for once even if it doesn't seem like it will change the world.

Hm, have nothing more to add to what inc said. If he raises any money it's a plus. So, let him do it they way he chooses to do it.

you guys are right, awareness levels are pretty low.

maybe you guys can sit on your asses for a days and raise the awareness awareness, so that people are more aware and receptive to awareness-raising attempts
By the way, my name is Funk. I am not of your world

Yes, live and let live is great in theory; however there are several problems with your thinking:

1. TL in general only has a certain attention span. If several topics are opened that are decidedly low in quality are to remain open, then the average overall quality drops. This means high quality threads get less attention. It also cultivates a culture of low quality being acceptable, meaning this problem quickly compounds.
2. Giving is great, but there's only a certain tolerance for this. Clearly you can see that - If every SC2 stream suddenly had a "Donate Here" ad on it, there would be zero effectiveness after awhile. If someone chooses to draw from our community's generosity, they had better maximize it to make it worthwhile or else they are squandering opportunity. This should be inherently obvious.
3. It's moderators' jobs here to to draw the line between what is acceptable and not. That includes offering suggestions and criticisms to mold the forum in the direction they see fit. If you believe in some form of free-reign forum with zero moderation I suppose that something you can campaign for, but there's no reason to be shocked that we are doing our jobs.

I'm always skeptical of these things because they come off as attention grabs more than being prompted by some philanthropic urge by the host of the event, simply because there really are such better ways to gather charitable donations if you actually believed in a cause. Yeah sure every little bit helps, but if you were like "wow I really believe in this cause" you would get off your ass.

My skepticism is compounded when the person hosting it runs a podcast (which ironically has an interview from Inc on its page that I just checked out) this just sort of confirms my belief that the motives are far from altruistic, and in fact kind of shady since he has such a vested interest in garnering attention for his own site and he's essentially using "charity!!!!!" as a method.

Is he putting anything in? Is he matching the donations from the crowd? Because it looks to me like an attention grab from behind the shield of charity and there's really no investment from him except his time going into doing something he was already very likely to be doing of an evening.

So yeah I do take issue with the hypocrisy of blatantly using a charity for your own ends such as to gain hits for your website

By the way I officially declare that I am posting for charity so you can't respond and disagree with the things I say. Well you can but your keyboard will forever be stained with the blood of starving children

at the end of the day.. im ok with him trying to do something nice. Despite chill's defense that TL is comprised of short attention span retards that apparently are losing out on threads like girl troubles or FB debates.

But yeah, you get em chill! I hope that bitch is sorry for ever trying to do too little!

It's a fucking blog. He was saying he is going to do this thing and asking if anyone wants to help while he gets the details sorted out. How can he get anyone signed on to help him if he doesn't ask around first?

I guess the word plan was a bad choice. The date is set and there are a lot of people interested in doing it, I'm just not comfortable confirming anyone until we get closer to the day of and they can tell me 100% whether or not they can make it.

I think you could've at least waited until you confirmed the charity and obtained their approval and support. While I'm sure charities welcome your efforts and any donations, I would assume they would prefer the opportunity to research about things before you attach their names to it.

They have no problem with it, the discussion is over setting up a chipin so that we can find out how much we've raised.

While I agree with all of Chill's points, I think floor exercise articulated #2 better. The real problem is that this thread exists to increase interest for an event that seems like a facade.

Edit: Actually, I think the OP needs more details. Is this happening on your TL live user stream? If that's the case, it's not so bad to post about it, however it should be in your user stream thread rather than a separate blog.

Sounds like a good cause.

If you're interested, I wouldn't mind playing a bo3 or something and donating $10 per game. Or something dunno ^^ just an idea.

Otherwise if I happen to catch you're stream I will donate a small amount if you do something to earn it, whether it be some sweet micro, a funny joke, or something :p Charity is cool, but its gotta at least be a little fun

Alright, I usually try to keep my disagreements mostly to myself but this is just depressing guys.

I can tell you FROM EXPERIENCE that doing a special livestream event RAISES MONEY. Are you guys familiar with the speed running community? They do this shit ALL the time and raise really good money for charities.

How does it raise money? You uh, say 'I'm doing this for a charity, if you guys want to help please donate, if not, enjoy the show .'

On top of that he said he is going to try and get people from the community to do special matches. Is that something you see 'all the time'? No.

People are allowed to post constant 'HOT AZN BLOG 15.. [NSFW]' blogs and no one cares, and when someone does something nice its like the worst thing that could ever happen to the Team Liquid ***BLOG*** section.

Give me a break.

Asking for money from the community should require a level of professionalism. I'm not his friend, I'm his potential audience that he's asking money from.

Professional
Mark this date. 24 hour Charity event on XX raising donations for YY. I'm xxxxx.and yyyy deserve your money for. There will be special guests.

Awkward appeal for money
Hey guys, i guess i'll blog this. gonna to raise money for YYY. i'm going to be laddering and streaming. talked to some people, and they said they are interested.

There is hate because there is legitimate charity work out there that deserve support. Their events are well planned and professional, thus the work they do inspires their audience to have confidence in them and the charity they represent.

If you want to seem legitimate, you have to present yourself legitimately.

Yeah I agree. Until he makes a colorful and pretty looking OP with concise information regarding EXACT information on where my 5$ is going I will hate on him and mock him while I continue to regularly support that better organized charity that I've been supporting for so long.

Fucking idiot can't even make a good OP, the audacity!

also if we didn't mock/hate on him TL would be overran by bad threads asking for money for charities. That would be terrible. Fortunately we have Chill and other vets here to put these a-holes in their place and make sure future charitable bitches steer clear unless they plan on fulfilling the arbitrary OP requirements the ethereal TL moderation of that day has decided is adequate!

I was actually planning on making a really nice OP tomorrow, just not sure where I should post it lest I get the thread closed. I want to put it in the SC2 forums
