I know I just should man up and get to the gym... especially since its free at university, but until I do, is there any suggestions that you have for working out at home? I have a set of weights but no bench press yet. I've just been doing pull ups, sit ups, and working with the dumbells.
And yes I have seen all the extra exercises using dumbells, and I will add them into when I work out... but I just any extra tips to get the most out of it.
I used to work out alot in highschool, stopped but have started again. Im also pretty skinny (5 11' and 150 lbs) but whenever i start working out I see results REALLY fast.
I have 2 45 lb dumbells and that is all i need.
dumbell bench- 3 sets of 10 dumbell rows- 2 sets of 10 (its where you put your knee on the bench and lift your arm one side at a time to a 90 degree angle and slowly lower it.) curls - 2 or 3 sets of 10 50 situps 25 oblique situps on each side (put your leg on your knee and touch the opposite elbow to it slowly) as many pushups as i can do
This is all upper body because i dont have leg equipment and I have a job where I stand up for 12 hours at a time + walking miles on campus and such.
This workout Is what i do when i am trying to get back into weight lifting. You cant just jump right into this type of thing because if you do too extreme of a workout you will hurt yourself.
Take it slow and get a bench!
O_o
You curl as much as you bench and row?
yea lol im pretty sure I can go up in weight for benching but i dont have any weights!!
Hey I just started working out and trying to lose weight so this is pretty important for me.
I just have one question about cardio. I want to lose weight pretty fast in couple of months and I think I can do it but I'm not sure how much cardio I should do in order to achieve this. I'm trying to limit my calorie intake per day to approximately 1000 and running whenever I can but as a pretty unfit person to begin with, I can't really run on treadmill or outside for a very long time since I get tired pretty easily. Is there other cardio excercise I should check out or should I just keep running to improve my cardio/lose weight? And how much cardio should I be doing daily?

1000 calories is way too low (assuming you're male). What is your current weight?
Do not lower your calorie intake. When you dont eat enough, your body goes into fat conservation mode and will actually make you cut fat at lower rate. Eat nutritious food - cut carbs - eat fruit - drink a lot of water. Start doing HITT as advised in the OP and you will cut fat quickly.
Yeah, don't go too low on calories. Try to stay around the amount of calories you burn during a typical day and you will slowly gain strength/muscle and loose fat. So around 2000-2500 calories is sufficient.
Don't ever eat 1000 calories/day (unless you're very overweight) if you're male because this will make your body keep the fat and loose muscle because muscle is a faster source of energy usually. Be smart, don't buy into the low calorie diet + running thing because you will end up skinny fat. Weight lifting or any sport involving using your muscles in an anaerobic way will make your body look more athletic. Period
I'm currently about 164lbs and I'm hoping to hit 140 in few months and about 5' 9". I'm fine with working out and doing cardio but I just need a plan to get it going. I'm trying to lower the calorie and carb intake to fasten up the process but I do eat protein after working out to make sure my muscles can be repaired. Is there any problem with this or any suggestions? My goal is to lose weight but I'm constantly building my muscle as well.

You should eat at least 2000 calories per day. Losing any more than 2-3 pounds per week is not healthy.
If anyone has any specific questions, lemme know. I'm a certified personal trainer with the NASM (something that idiot trainers would never be able to pass)
I did a search for 'equipment' and it didn't really come up in this thread so I hope this hasn't already been answered. But what are your thoughts on home fitness equipment you often see on infomercials? I reckon it'd be cool to have something to do while watching a movie on TV or something... Are there any you would recommend? Thanks.
Unfortunately I don't have a live-in girlfriend otherwise I would get the below:
Well I would say that the ab-wheel is one of the few good items you can get from TV-shop. The rest are generally quite bad and don't do much for your body.
Good blog. I started weight lifting since I entered college in January and I've already seen huge results for that time. My chest is noticibly bigger now and I feel like I have more energy. To top it off, I burned 6 pounds, going from an average of 164 to 157. Since I know I've done tons, of weightlifting, I think I lost a good 6 pounds fat, which is awesome. Seriously, weight lifting is so incredibly good for you and after getting results like this after only 2 months, I can't wait to see how I'll look in 1 year.
This seems like a good blog, even though I didn't read through the whole thing.
I've been weight lifting for the last yearish and in general I think if you want to lose fat doing heavy lifting is a better way to lose it. The more muscle density you get the more calories they burn by themselves, so basically you'll lose fat AND gain muscle which will mean you will look good (naked), instead of like when you see these obese people who do cardio only and just look horrible despite hitting a goal weight. Ofcourse doing weightlifting (and very little cardio) means alot slower fat loss and some people might be discouraged when the scale is standing still (or even going up due to the muscle mass increase).
