Ingenol: Yeah, people respond differently to different workout routines. The important thing however is to switch it up. I still think most beginners should start with the full body workout in order to properly learn the exercises.

Yep! There are quite alot of different splits but the one I posted is like you say the most common one I've ever seen.
I know that deep inside of you there's a humongous set of testicles just waiting to pop out. Let 'em pop bro. //////////////////// AKA JensOfSweden // Lee Yoon Yeol forever.

http://www.exrx.net/ is a great website to use and more ppl, especially ppl new to lifting should check it out. I think the hardest part for beginners is knowing what the exercises are supposed to look like and that website is great with their animated gifs and comprehensiveness on all the machines and variations.

@OP
What I do is pretty much exactly the full body workout routine.

Could you explain the advantages again for the other types of routine because I did not understand? (sorry)

Also my current theory (self made) was that it is better to do only 2 sets of each exercise, even though I am going for muscle gain, because this will allow me to do twice as many different exercises as supposed to doing half as many but 4 sets total. Your thought?

Ty though. Didn't spot anything wrong and learned a few things. If I could add something, I would advise skipping. I can see that it is not quite analogous to your suggested cardio routine but it is a great way to warm up. Also by varying the pace at which you skip you might be able to find something similar to that HIIT technique.

edit to clarify my 1st Q:
I do not understand why only doing one muscle group 1x a week is supposedly > 3x a week. Is it just that you can do more exercise on the day? ie. I only do 2 chest exercises in a routine but if I set aside a whole day for it then I could do many more? But if this is the case, then do you not find that some of the exercises sort of overlap on many of the muscles and so you cannot do them as well because you just did the bench before, etc.

HIIT is a pretty good way of working out. I used to train with a friend, and we would go to a local outdoor track and do the following:

A light 2 lap jog to warm up (+ agility work).
20 - 10 yard sprints, doing one sprint, immediately walking back to the starting point, and then
immediately starting the next one.
15 - 20 yard sprints, doing the same as above.
10 - 40 yard sprints, ditto.
5 - 110 yard sprints, ditto.
Then a light 2 lap jog to cool down (+ stretching).

This was part of my training routine for university football. It worked great having a friend around, because you would be racing for each sprint. And you'll be exhausted at the end of it. I did not try to train for long-distance running, so this worked best for me. I was doing this twice a week at the time, and I was in great shape after only a couple weeks of my program (which was really, really intense).

Be a woman.

http://www.tv.com/seinfeld/the-apology/episode/2405/recap.html?tag=episode_recap;recap

EDIT: Basically, Jerry's girlfriend is constantly naked in his apartment. And this isn't a problem with him until she starts coughing, which I guess naked + coughing = bad for him. So he and a friend hatch a plan where he starts doing things naked to show her there is 'good' naked and 'bad' naked. She stops him and explains the same thing to him except she points out that only women look good naked. His plan backfires and she leaves him because she can't stop picturing him naked around the apartment now.

I just scrolled down the blog. I kind of like blogs that are so detailed, and I do need to work out. However I'd rather just do it swimming that have to think about it.

About looking good naked. There's a how to video on it on ytube. You're supposed to look tall, put one leg in front of the other when you walk... etc.
Another major thing is to not be too fat (obviously) or too skinny (skinny people are supposedly less attractive when naked than average~skinny people). Since I've never seen a member of the opposite sex naked outside my computer, I have to assume that to be true.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

I'm going to go ahead and veto the suggestion of sets of 12 for gaining muscle. I would not do more than 8 reps/set for muscle gains, as you're just getting into endurance (working slow twitch muscles) at that point. Another major factor in gaining size vs gaining strength for low rep sets is the time you rest in between sets. Usually for hypertrophy (muscle gain), I've read 45 sec - 90 sec in between sets. Above 90 sec (I usually say 2-3min) would be more for strength gains, as that allows your fast twitch muscles to recoup.

Since I generally want both, I stick to 5x5, 4x6, and 3x8 routines, and change between 45 sec. and 2 minutes rest depending on the routine, and then you'll notice the numbers on the weights going up as well as on the scale.

On a related manner, get a little color if you want to look good naked. Nobody wants to see a pasty white guy's body, even if he's ripped. It also helps show your definition (look at how much fake tan bodybuilders put on during a competition).

reps are each completed movement in an exercise, like one pushup, one bicep curl. A set is a group of reps, like 12 reps could equal one set.

Ohhh only 1 exercise for each muscle thats...weird.

I was taught to work out like this:

2 groups a day as in lets say...chest and biceps.

3 exercise for each muscle

3 sets each exercise.

8-12 reps of each set (depends what exercise)

This way I always get a full workout with results.

Same, except I would do it "upper" and "lower", and vary the exercises I did each time, starting with the exercises closest to the core muscles. I was a fan of cleans, squats and presses.

During the summer and warmer times in the park, the football and NFL HIIT work really well if I dont want to regular cardio.

edit: To bad its still pretty cold here, still gotta lose 10+kg to keep my weight normal.

I'll put up a blog entry about proper (and cheap/effective) nutrition later today hopefully

I will also be covering supplements

Edit:

Lonelymargarita: I'm sorry but that's just wrong. 7/8-11/12 is the reps interval for muscle gains. period
Btw I'm not making this stuff up, I read about weight lifting all the time and incorporate it into my own workout routines.

Muff2n: A full body workout is KICK ASS for gaining strength fast since you're working your muscle groups several times/week as opposed to once per week. Thus you will have more chances to move up in weights and strength while still having a day of rest in between workouts. The point of the full body workout is basically to add strength pretty fast. I went from 50 kg > 70 kg in bench press over the course of 2 months only because I could bench 2-3 times/week and try to up it a notch every time. Awesome stuff. Also I was doing low reps - many sets. Like 5x4 or something, which is in the strength gain interval. So I figured I get my strength up first and then start doing higher reps in the muscle building area.

No workout routine is really better than another, they are just different. Everyone will reach plateaus and the golden rule of weight lifting is: MIX IT UP. Never, ever do the same workout routine for 6 months (unless you's a powerlifter). Do one routine for 1-2 months - take a week off (or light weights) then change the workout routine.

There is also a couple of ways to speed up the process a little, and I will go into that in my next installment.

I know that deep inside of you there's a humongous set of testicles just waiting to pop out. Let 'em pop bro. //////////////////// AKA JensOfSweden // Lee Yoon Yeol forever.

Great blog mate, I need to find a way to motivate myself. I've got the diet down so I'm not gaining any weight, but I'm only working out once a week at the moment so I am seeing no gains. I don't know where my motivation went.
