Gliding through the sandy Dunesprevious ring blogs: 1, 2, 3
I'm writing this blog because a friend of mine came over and took pictures to accompany the following story (I'll try to keep it short and it's actually not about Dune)
-
I always fiddle around with making jewelry and trinkets etc so my mum (God bless her) asked me to make her something. So I did some research into what chainmail weaves are a bit more feminine (needless to say I only make manly things for myself) and I ended up at the Queen's maille weave (also known as Round maille).
Of course it needed to be tiny so I ended up using 3.5mm diameter metal rings. Needless to say it's not as easy to work with such small components. The result is below (see Lego block for size comparison).
She was quite happy with it and has been for quite a while when, 3 weeks ago, she asked me to make another one out of copper. Of course I love my mum etc so I was like "yeah no prob" but the thing with copper is that it isn't as strong as, say, iron. To maintain the same strength I had to use even smaller rings, 3mm this time. As a consequence the weave became tighter as even harder to work with. This was the result:
Of course though, it's never enough. I'd hardly finished this one before I got the "Hey, can you do something with both colours?" question. God bless her soul. Of course, because of the copper, I still had to work with the tiny tiny 3mm and added to that I made it to have a spiral of orange running around it. I have to say it was a nice challenge. Here's the result:
I spent about 20 hours on this and wouldn't be loath to asking >100 € for it in a commercial environment. From my mum though I'll just get a hug and she'll go n_n etc.
So yeah, I'm making the blog to get some blooming appreciation. Just rate it a 5 or tell me how awesome I am so I can feel really smug for a couple of days. Thx ^^;
Also, here's some more pictures:

That is actually really cool! Where do you get supplies for things like that? Do arts and craft stores have whatever XX mm metal rings for this purpose? Rated 5

This is pretty much the smallest I can do using small pliers.

I make the rings myself. Galvanized iron is sold in a bunch of different sizes but copper is harder to get. I actually stripped a bunch of electricity wire for this. Also thx ^^;

My friend has a hackie sack made in the same manner. The style is so great. Nice work Pholon!
