I has a blog! Huzzahs are in order and such.
Anyway, I'm in need of some new computer games to play. I think I want something in the RPG or RTS genre, with a focus on single player. Two days ago I finally got my first lvl 80 character in WoW, (DON'T JUDGE ME SHUTUP I HATE YOU), and in between that and System Shock 2 I have gotten pretty bored. Anyway, I recently watched all of the newer videos for the SC2 single player campaign, and I am so freaking excited for it! Having had my fill of multiplayer shenanigans through WoW, and horror through SS2, I'm looking for a fun single player game. My thoughts so far:
RTS: I love starcraft, and wc3. I've loved the early C&C games, I loved Armies of Exigo, total annihilation, etc. But it's been a while since I've played an RTS game with a really engaging single player campaign. Obviously I want a copy of SC2 to fall into my lap right now, but that's likely not going to happen. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good RTS single player game? Preferably one with a decent story, engaging decision making and such, etc. Something exciting that will actually make me think a bit. Preferably at least. I played through DoW2 at like the start of summer, and while I love the warhammer universe, the game sucked balls.
RPG: I've had the strangest urge lately to play through Hellgate London again. However, since I have no way of re-downloading the game from EA even though I legitimately bought it at the time of release, (fuck you EA), I haven't bothered to. While WoW is more of a social thing and half of the fun is chatting at guildies in vent, I would love to play a game sort of like D2, but one that I don't already know by heart, lol. I've played so much D2 over the years that nothing is surprising anymore, I know exactly what to do, etc. I know the game inside and out. I've heard good things about the D2 Median mod or whatnot, but when I tried playing it a year or so ago, it confused the hell out of me. Anyone have any good RPG-ish game recommendations? I'm loving SS2 at the moment, but the game is scary as hell, and my irrational fear of spiders doesn't help at all.
Naval Simulation: If anyone here is a tabletop game nerd, there's a chance they've heard of Battlefleet Gothic. You basically have a fleet of spaceships that fly around and blast the crap out of each other, with somewhat complicated rules such as momentum, ranging, which way the sun is coming from, etc. It's a lot of fun, but it's a tabletop game, which means I have to go to a store and put up with a room full of a completely different kind of nerd. I've never found a good space combat simulation game. I loved the Homeworld series, but those were basically more of an RTS in 3d. I'd really love a game where you are basically the admiral of a fleet or something, and control a few ships, with lots of customization, etc. And obviously, bonus points for a game with some decent story. And when I say naval combat, it doesn't have to be space. Any game in which large ships float/fly around firing big guns at each other would be spectacular. (Think of "Resurrection Ship: Part 2" from Battlestar Galactica. I would LOVE a game like that!)
Anyway, I'm really lost on what to look at. Much thanks for reading all that, and all suggestions are very much appreciated! Thanks!

being a star wars fan, I can reccomend KOTOR one and two, for the rpg section. rts i'm not too sure about, I dont' stray far from sc. you could always just download a free mmorpg and waste a few months/years on it. conquer online ruined my last two years of high school, so if you want something addictive, play that.

Try The Witcher, Mass Effect and Fallout 3 for RPGs. For RTS, try DoW 1, which is an actual strategy and maybe Company of Heroes. Supreme commander is a decent RTS, but the campaign sucks balls. World in Conflict is another one that's more tactics than actual strategy (no base management), so i dunno if you like that sort of thing.
|
I never tried DoW 2, so I couldn't compare it to 1, but I can say that DoW 1 definitely didn't suck, as long as you don't try to mistake it for any kind of serious, competitive game. I found it nice to play around with as a changeup from SC occassionally back in the day.
|
I really can't think of any RTS that even comes close to the level of competitiveness that SC and WC3 offer. They are all either too slow, too shallow strategically, too imbalanced or all of the above.

For RTS give Dark Reign and Homeworld a good look. Netstorm is a great, very challenging RTS. Probably my first choice, but not exactly traditional. Battle Realms is a game I've always wanted to try, and should be interesting. One of the Battlezone type games might also be worth a look.
Given you enjoy SS2, but not the atmosphere, I'd say the natural choice would be Deus Ex. I'll also briefly plug Anachronox here as a good game that might help transition into 'harder' RPG's like the FO's.
I'm not too clear on naval simulations, but the Harpoon series is worth considering (ultra-detailed naval combat simulation).

PICK UP COUNTERSTRIKE
then we can 2v2 starcraft and then take a break and 2v2 in cs!!!!

NETSTORM! Fuck, I want to play that game so much now. Also orb, give me your steam handle :O I need someone to play CS with, since they shut down all the places i used to hang around

RPGs: Planescape: torment is the best RPG ever made. Fallout (first one, 3d is piece of shit) is very good too. Go play these now, so you know what a real RPG looks like. (man I wish I could play planescape without knowing the story already. that game is a piece of art)
RTS: Try nexus: Jupiter incident. Pretty much what you're looking for I think, 1-10 spaceships in your command, you can customize them heavily (weapons, shields, engines, bla bla bla) and its very tactical. You can shoot ship parts to disable them and so on. Interesting campaign as well . It's not too challenging for us hardcore starcraft nerds, but it's not too easy either.
Maybe try ground control 2 as well, it's a fun game. No base building, you get points for accomplishing objectives which you can then use to buy more units. Not hard. Not competetive. But fun.

+1 for The Witcher, Deus Ex, Fallout 1, Planescape: Torment, and Netstorm.
KotOR is a good introduction to CRPGs (PST and Fallout are much less accessible). I'd play in an order along the lines of:
KotOR 1/2 -> Baldur's Gate 1/2 -> Planescape: Torment -> Fallout 1/2
Anachronox is fun, but a bit quirky; not sure its for everyone.

I'm currently playing Fable for the PC. Never got around to playing it when it came out. I've never really played RPG's a lot. However, I'm really digging the game.
I guess it's more of a game for RPG newbs like me, but I find the combat system/mechanics really simple/easier to learn compared to some other RPG's.

For RTS i recommend World in Conflict, it doesn't have building control or things like that. You gain points by killing other units which let you call in reinforcements via air support. Game is set in the Cold war and the USSR invaded the USA and Europe. It's a really great single player experience.

If you're into RPG's with a very good storyline and a solid universe, try any of the game in the Gothic Franchise, except Forsaken Gods that is. Gothic 2: Night of The Raven is one of the best RPG's I've ever played.
I can't really recommend any RTS besides war3 and starcraft as I strongly believe that anyone but Blizzard can make good games.

Dunno if you've heard about Vassal - it's a program that lets you play a whole bunch of tabletop games online, including BFG.
First link while googling, not sure how up to date it is but shouldn't be impossible to find it: http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/battlefleet-gothic/108097-bfg-vassal.html
Of course, then you'd need to find people that play it too
Oh and I second the recommendation of Deus Ex. The engine feels almost identical to Deus Ex (down to the excessive amount of empty wine bottles you'll find...).
Also, I was recently searching for something similiar to BFG but on the PC, and ran across these two games:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wolves http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexus_the_jupiter_incident
I dl:ed both but had trouble getting them running and then got distracted by something and forgot about them I guess.
Not sure if they are exactly what you are looking for but they are billed as real-time tactics and the theme is right
Oh hm, and a couple of suggestions I make in most threads like this, even though they aren't 100% matches:
Star Control 2 (aka Ur Quan Masters - it's available free under that name, really old game but has a good story, good gameplay and is really funny). Sort of an RPG I guess ? From early 90s.
UFO:Enemy Unknown (aka X-Com) - should be able to find it free online, squad based tactical game. From mid/early 90s.

READ FIRST : I think your bored because you're just playing games that are too similar to each other, maybe spice it up with some variety, try games of different genres?
And also you've kinda played the best of the best games of the RTS/RPG genre already, I'd think it would be dumb to recommend anything else to you at this point.
However some quality RPG games I would recommend for some serious/hardcore single player RPGing Baldur's Gate 1/2 (2 is much better), you could try Icewind Dale 1/2 as well but I think you would again become very bored if you played them all through too close to each other, BG 2 is best pick of those.
You can try Fallout 3 (I didn't particularly like it but you might). If you loved Diablo 2 you might wanna check out Borderlands (because basically D2 is the best it that genre and everything else will just feel too similar or cheap to you when you compare it, which you will do xP), it's kinda Diablo and Counter-Strike infused together, FPS with RPG elements with focus on online coop and GUNSSS!!! or perhaps Bioshock as well, that's another really good quality fps/rpg game, and its single player focused.
If you played SS2 and liked it, you might also like Dead Space, but it's one of those horror survival kind of atmospheres so yeah xP lol
For a good RTS single player I've heard that World of Conflict's campaign was meant to be really good, I didn't play it myself though, I bought the game, played multiplayer (which was pretty shit) and returned the game the following day.
But yeah maybe take a break from RPG/RTS play some Dota ;D?! lol. Maybe try the new Batman game, it has gotten many good reviews.
But a game I would recommend to anyone is Ninja Gaiden the one on the xbox, if you can borrow an xbox or something and got the game, you will definitely love this game, very challenging and just plain awesome, especially all the cool looking combos and stuff ;D

I recommend the old DOS-game: KGB/Conspiracy. You can download it from anywhere but you'll need DOSBOX to run it.
