Yes, roleplaying. Serious roleplaying. I was in the midst of smoking a bowl when I was thinking about the sheer talent that the majority of Tlers have. We have an entire thread that is devoted to sorting us by our specialties. I thought: "Amongst the photoshop wizards and programming gods there certainly must be some hardcore nerds who enjoy good roleplay".
I'm not talking about stupid shit folks, I'm talking about *pages* of biographies, dialogue, events, etc. It's no secret that people here like to read and write, and I am no exception. It is something I enjoy (when I have time).
I've been tossing the idea in my head for quite some time actually, but I've always had doubts for one reason or the other. So now I'm going through with it and I figured I would first just find out if anybody is interested. I already have some ideas but I think if we get enough people who want to seriously do this we can all decide on something.
So, anybody?
Update: Polls included in spoilers!
+ Show Spoiler +Poll: Would you be interested in a TL RP?( Vote): Yes, but I won't participate. ( Vote): Yes, count me in! ( Vote): No I wouldn't. Poll: The theme should be:( Vote): StarCraft ( Vote): Fantasy ( Vote): Horror ( Vote): Post-apocalyptic ( Vote): Modern ( Vote): Other (specifiy)

I used to play call of cthulhu one shots over at my friends place. Never role-played over the internet though. Sounds interesting.

I'm already in a different roleplay and writing fanfiction. Between those, I do plenty of creative/imaginative writing as it is.

I think this is a good thing, but I don't even understand what you are proposing.

Yeah, me to a little. What kind of roleplaying? Fantasy? Victorian? Steampunk? Modern?
|
D&D, maybe. I've been to one LARP event. Not really my thing.
|
I tried doing a D&D type thing with a friend of mine who converted StarCraft into the rule set. Unfortunately, I was his only player and the idea was soon discarded. TT I was a Level 1 Zealot with my sights set on returning to Auir to reclaim a family artifact lost during the escape to Shakuras.

I don't really care exactly what we do, I was just trying to gauge general interest to get an idea of the number of people who could seriously participate. Depending on that we could do different things.

I don't really want to be the person to decide that. I think we could do a poll to see what people like. I was thinking a Fantasy theme, since I have the most experience with it. A StarCraft theme would also be cool.
My idea was this:
1. Post bios. Pick special traits and qualities, etc.
2. Divide players up into factions, who would roleplay 'against' one another. We could use an IRC channel for live dialogue, or even a thread. A thread would be easier probably and IRC will keep the thread less cluttered. The IRC conversations would be entirely IC, so we could post them to thread for continuity.
3. Have a third party (whoever is interested) roleplay as 'gods'. They would be in charge of deciding what is going on in the setting of the story. For example: If the city the faction resides in were to get struck by lightning and the city were burning down, this said third party would script that and the roleplayers would need to roleplay to find a new home. Any fights/etc would be 'scripted' by them.
There is more, but I really wanted to see if there was a good interest before we seriously proceed with this.

I play white wolf games almost exclusively. Occasionally D&D, but I really am fond of White Wolf.
oWoD is awesome and nWoD has some nice stuff, but let's be honest... New vampire and mage suck compared to the old ones. New werewolf is alright, but nWoD shines with Changeling and Giest and Hunter. Promethean is awesome, but unplayable.
Oh, I also LARP. Wait, wait... I get paid to LARP!
|
Why not make a totally unique rpg for teamliquid? With a separate world, history and all that.

could you please make your own blog or expand on your larping experiences? I've never actually seen a real larper before and out of curiosity would like to know your take on it.

This is what I'm talking about. I know with all of the serious mafia players would could think of something >_<

If this RP is gonna be set in the Starcraft universe im so definitely 400% in.
|
I love some good ol' pen and paper geeking. Been doing some DnD (1st, 2nd, 2.5, 3rd and 3.5), Mutant Chronicles (1st and 2nd ed), Sengoku (2nd ed), Deadlands (2nd ed) and Cyberpunk 2020 in my time.
If you want to do some online-based pnp, add me to your list. I'd love to join.
Edit: I might as well add straight away though: over-the-top, pretentious RP makes me gag.

1. Why not?
2. Terran, Protoss, Zerg, definitely.
3. One of the mods? :D
I don't mind [:

post-apocalyptic fantasy steampunk imo

post apocalyptic = low population = boring.
It's nice fighting off 10,000 orcs with a group of friends.
|
A world where aliens have taken over. Periodically your starcraft skills are tested and if you fail you are killed.
|
how about;
the modern day world continues to live as it is now, and global warming becomes a big problem. the polar caps melt, and nearly all land is under water. billions of humans die, and the rest remain alive on huge sea platforms. over time, we have evolved and certain humans have the ability to wield magic, but only a small % of the population can do so.
or;
the modern day world continues to live as it is now, and there is a breakthrough in technology. we are able to achieve inter-stellar travel, and we colonise mars and a moon of saturn, titan. that's a more sci-fi idea.
or we can just make a world of our own, which i'm more inclined to.

I played in no order
D n D AD n D Vampire Palladium Gurps TMNT Shadowrun Some weird super hero rpg with a comedic twist forgot the name. I think thats it for straight Rpg not taking into account Magic the Gathering (got into it while waiting for players to show up for our weekly vampire games long ago) Or table top games liike Warhammer ( no i never had my own army I used friends army's or the gaming centers at the time) It has been years since I actually sat down with some serious rpgers and tried to get a game going.Though I have thought about it allot.

I used to play a space game called Freelancer on a Roleplay server. So i played a british fighter plane who joined a spanish group of partisans (i think thats the most accurate word). Its quite fun IMO when you have 12 v 12 space fights against your archenemies with battleships, gunboats, bombers and fighters. goes boom everywhere and people are generally pretty okay at roleplaying.

I play quite alot of D&D 3.5 and 4.0 and some D20 Call of Cthulhu both online at www.enworld.org and tabletop with friends for about 9 years now.
|
I've played alot of roleplaying games in my younger days:
AD&D Runequest
and some less known ones. RPG's can really be awesome with the right crows and atmosphere
Funnily enough RPG's weren't considered that nerdy when I was younger where I lived, so the cool kids would play AD&D lol

not necessarily
Dark Sun is a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting, and it doesn't have a low population compared to other fantasy settings.

I do what I can.
Anyway, I updated the OP with a couple of polls. It seems we have a decent group of roleplayers. If anyone is really really serious and would like to help design a good game, send me a PM with your MSN or IRC name.

LordWeird is an appropriate name for you.

Few questions about this:
- Communication: How did you plan on running this? Through a chat program (IRC etc.) with dice macros, or over voice chat? Browser / forum-based? Or even over email (lolol net1.0)?
- Game mechanics: Do you have a planned game system? Home-cooked? Dice-based, or is this simply story-driven with GM intervention?
- Setting: Planning on using a pre-set game world, fictional or world/history-based?
- Organisation: Have you set your GM crew yet? Are you running the GM side yourself? Did you plan on a timeframe/set game times for game sessions? At which time zone are you planning on doing this?
Edit; Oh, and also
- Characters: You mentioned something like 'page-long biographies' in your OP. What did you have in mind for the characters of the campaign for this? Epic scale past/events, or joe-schmoe, or anything in between? Somewhat more accurate than 'tons of pages' please.
|
I enjoy role-playing, I run a play-by-chat Mage: The Ascension game and am a keen 7th Sea and Paranoia player, but I'm not particularly interested in play-by-post, the interface limitations are a real buzzkill for me.
I'll probably keep an eye on the goings-on though.

1. I'm not sure there was ever going to be anything to run. I just wanted to see who would be interested.
2. No. I didn't have much of an idea going into this because I figured there wouldn't be many people. I am leaning towards the latter as for right now.
3. I was hoping we could use the SC universe >_<
4. No. Maybe. No. EST.
This is all in it's infancy... I just wanted to know if there were enough nerds like me to make it worth the effort.

I play on a regular "at least once a week" paper and dice RPG
In the last 15 years i have played many systems and even made a couple. You name it, i probably played it at least once.
With some friends when we were into Ogame (like 5 years ago) we had a forum with our roleplaying of the game. We made stories, read them, add stupid things, and solve any diference with Ogame fleets. Was one of the nicer things that i have been part of in the net, in 4 months we had thousand of posts. But Ogame was an idiotic game that demanded tons of time, and we had to work, study, have a life. So our aliance died and the forum did aswell.

oh, yes, we didnt play as character, we played it as home worlds, so we had any amount of character that we wanted, being the regent of your home world your main character.. like the Character Tree described on darksun
