Frankly, I don't see anything out of the ordinary here beyond the uniquely uproarious state of US politics. I'm pretty sure these website feedback explosions coincide with the release of particularly controversial or ground-shaking news anyhow.
Edit: Though I will note that the "close the thread" and "ban these people" folks tend to be the same over time.

Kwark is the single poster most responsible for making me decide that reading the thread is actually worthwhile, and I nearly stopped while Kwark and p6 were gone. Entirely too much of the discussion was just LL trying to bring up electability again.

Those who think that this is really about Kwark are badly missing the point. I could complain about any number of posters at length, but I don't. Nor do I report people, despite having ample reason on a daily basis to do so. Regardless of his status as a mod, Kwark is going to post how he posts, and I'm not trying to disrupt his posting, as distasteful as I find it. My attitude has always been that the politics thread is a free speech zone where people should be given great leeway to post what they want.
This is about the TL mod staff.

I don't think Kwark needs to be mod removed, I think he's fine in where he's posting, and it's not like he's moderating the thread, he's just calling xDaunt out, especially when you contradict yourself so many times xDaunt. Some one in the previous thread said it earlier, I like when Kwark posts because he thought out and thorough. I don't always agree with him, just like I don't always agree with xDaunt, but that's the point of these politic threads.
I feel like the politics threads is where every week some calls some one out, then it just goes into non stop shit talking about the other persons views, then into here in the feedback thread. I'm wondering when people with well thought out opinions can actually discuss real matters without having to dive into "ALT RIGHT/ALT LEFT" garbage.

personally, i find the drama in the thread to be entertaining with no consequences. it's kind of like how xdaunt said that a trump administration would be interesting and exciting to anyone with intellectual curiosity (if there were no real potential downside).
well, i suppose the thread could be shut down, which would be a shame.

It would be, and I would hate for it to happen. As a concerned US Citizen, the US Politics thread helps me vent my anxiety of our current situation. And I'm sure it helps everyone else too. I seriously think it goes back to the old saying:

What I'd say this is really about is just how being an asshole to others tends to be quite contagious. A couple of posters returning to the thread after a 90-day exile was all it took to turn a pretty chill discussion back into the cesspool that the thread has always been. It's not just because they are all so prevalent that they dominate the discussion but simply that when a few people do it (especially those with a mod icon), it starts to become the norm with a larger batch of me-too assholes coming out of the woodwork.

You can just ignore KwarK like I do Gh and Doodsmack. I mean like actually and not the dumb idea of ignoring him that you think your doing.
Just don't read his posts or respond to his responses to his posts.
I think that xDaunt just has a problem with KwarK and is using his mod status as a crutch to explain it. People are bearing down a bit hard on him but I'd say it's really just 30-70.
At the least xDaunts recent line is better then some of the more inane things we have to do in the thread like talk about how the media is fascist somehow.

Right. The departure from cesspool was the anomaly. You might even extend the me-too to the current political debate. Journalists for major news outlets engage in hysteria, base huge articles on anonymous leaks and trust them thoroughly, and claim the opposition that does not think and act like they do are too partisan to see straight. And of course DNC politicians know there's good political odds with their base here and unite with them. Their readers and twitter followers and media icons drop incredulity and get ginned up into rage. They follow suit. If the contagion has infected the left, center left, and certain members of the center-right, it simply follows that TL posters are part of the tide. I'm speaking as someone that really dislikes Trump and congressional Republicans in similar degree to Democrats and the media, but base tribalism wants to place me in the same mold as Trump primary supporters.

When two people with opposing views start debating, both view each other as an asshole. I think everyone in the US politics can be an asshole at some point. I know I was once against xDaunt and yourself, but it just happens. I just think most people don't like hearing or reading the truth, and tend to back their belief much stronger than others. And that's the issue really.
We're at a point where we know how deep our ties are with each political spectrum here, and we know that most of the time how to push each others buttons. We're never going to change that other persons opinion, until they realize themselves they're also being assholes.

nah you can disagree with people and not be an asshole. i don't often post when i disagree with people because it's not my thing. but i typically disagree with most things Danglers says, but i'd never go so far as to say he's an asshole. that'd be ridiculous. he posts facts and opinions both, the key distinction here being he does so without insulting who he's talking to.
using danglers here because xdaunt likes to cry victim as one of the few conservatives. this clearly isn't the cause of people calling him out.
there are plenty of liberal assholes as well. i don't want my focus on conservatives to prove a point to be misconstrued.
