The captain is more of a role for veterans and for the experienced. They are not nessarilly the best but they are respected skill wise and generally older. Age is an important aspect in korean hierarchy and translates well in this captain positions in team setting.
See, I get that... which is why I understand a player like Rainbow for Startale, I sort of understand Cezanne for oGs but even this one is a tad surprising, I can wrap my head around Check for Prime. But Junwi for IM and Aya for MVP are really odd choices for captain to me, they seem like one of the worst performers for their respective teams and while I don't think the captain necessarily has to be the Ace, they should at least be comparable to the upper half of their group of peers.
The players you have mentioned are also extremely well respected, junwi is also the chairman/president of the SC2 players association.

A player who can motivate his team and analyse player's strengths and weaknesses isn't always going to be the very best personally.
That's where I was wondering about the use of the word captain as opposed to coaching, what you're describing seems more like a coach, a captain to me was always someone who was comparable to their peers but had some level of knowledge, experience or charisma to be a role model and help with the guiding, motivation and analysis. It seems the application is slightly different for some teams, while some teams use the standard approach, while some teams effectively have their ace as their captain.

This is simply what I was asking about, what exactly sets these players apart from their peers?because having a ~20% win rate and a crowning achievement of making it past the first round of Code A doesn't suggest too much. With Junwi, based on what you said, I guess that sort of makes sense.

Yeah. sC is good, Leenock is decent and GumiHo is passable. The rest are just. . .not so great.
Still, the way team leagues work it's a lot about the preparation. If you train up TheBest practising some cheese for two weeks on a specific map then, so long as it doesn't involve banshee control, he has half a chance to beat someone infinitely better than him like Losira.

I think some team make the best player captain, some team make the "leader" in their team captain, some team make the oldest/most experienced player captain. An example would be White-ra during the world championship, he may or may not be the best player, but he was the obvious choice for Captain because he is older than the rest and the most respected.
I think Slayers took the best player approach, while IM took the respected player approach. Personally I like the later because it fits with the meaning of captain really well. To me a captain should be the spirital leader of the team, someone like.........Boxer.
And Boxer isn't the leader of Slayers....meh...
Junwi is an old school progamer, maybe he's chosen because he's well respected in the team/older than the rest. I duno.

They are probably the best four on FXO at the moment, so you're likely to get your wish. Of course, it's possible a situation will come up in which they have a trained sniper who's better suited.
Though I don't fantasy have any FXO members, I'm rooting for them with all my heart~ <3
Also, expect IM to walkover. Anything that isn't a walkover will make me happy, I love me an underdog, and I do think Gumiho, Leenock and sC are players which haven't quite made it as far as they potentially can yet.
P.S. I hear NuclearFoU is pretty good. His stats here don't look impressive though.

Junwi has been around since the very beginining of BW, and he was one of the most skilled Zergs in the beta. The captain is often one of the weakest players on a BW pro-team, but also one of the most senior. You don't want your young ace player doing anything but dedicating himself to winning more games. The veterans are more suited for leadership roles anyway.

See, this is the point where I was a little surprised, for example in the White-ra example, that's what I think is the perfect example of a good selection for a captain, easily comparable with his peers, probably better than some of them, while also being very experienced, mannered, mature and charismatic. A weird choice for captain in that case would be... say if they made Artosis the captain and had someone else as the coach. I guess I just think of captains in different terms, they don't have to be the best player on the team, but they should be comparable in terms of skill and achievements with at least some of the better players in the team.
