I always told myself I would never pay monthly to play a video game. Even when I worked with a bunch of really cool guys who talk non-stop about WoW every hour of the day. That's fine, because if they were talking about SC in any way I'd surely be involved.
Anyways, upon the announcement of the starcraft 2 closed beta, I told myself it was probably time to stop playing. My computer is out of date, my graphics card is non existent, and I "borrow" internet from an unsecured wireless internet network which just so happens to be available for me whenever I want All these things, plus my age (21) and my ever-increasing responsibilities told me maybe I should hang up the mouse and forget about the game. I was completely content on being uninvolved in the beta until my friend offered me a key. It was like a switch went off in my head, I was actually able to play the game, and now I wanted to more than ever. It's like a nerd who says he'll never have sex until marriage, then a hot naked girl is standing in front of him. EXACT same thing. So I gladly took the key, and started thinking about the obstacles that stood in my way. Here is what I did to overcome them:
-Started by dropping $600~ on new computer. Luckily i got a vacation pay-cheque in only days after I got the beta key.
-Discovered the Nvidia graphics card that came stock in my CPU couldn't run SC2 at all, so dropped another $80~ on a Radeon card (Got a deal because it was open box)
-Pre-ordered SC2 (Another $70~)
Now I had all but one obstacle taken care of; my internet. Starcraft is a drug, and I apperently need my fix. Today, sometime between 8 am and 12 pm a technician from Bell Canada will be coming here to install my VERY OWN internet connection. I'll be getting Fibe 6 which is like sexy and everything. So Im thinking to myself, not only did i pay $750 just for hardware and accessories, but I'm going to be paying roughly $30/month just to maintain game-play. Am I crazy? My girlfriend certainly thinks so Let's see a WoW player put that much dedication into the game he loves :D

You were so close to being free.

You can never be free!
But seriously, Starcraft isn't just a game, it's a lifestyle :p

I have a really addictive personality so if I get tied up in something I'm usual at it for hours at a time. Plus I have met so many people over the years and I run a team so my time really gets eaten up in this game :O

I often come across people that are like: "Well, I should probably stop playing video games, I'm X years old after all."
I never understood that reasoning. A person enjoys what he enjoys and should continue doing what he enjoys, that is the only real way to live life happily if you ask me.
Also, living without an internet connection in todays society is to me unthinkable. I probably wouldn't be able to cope, lol.

You fool, now you've ruined your life forever.

Haha, pretty much exact same thing happened to me =P STARCRAFT!!!!!

Hell, I blew about 1600 bucks on a new computer this month even though I knew it would mean starvation for about two weeks before next paycheck rolls in but goddamnit man YOU GOTTA SKATE!

This blog makes me want to go out and spend money on more RAM and a new graphics card cause in comparison it's not too bad.

WoW players die behind their PC's ^^

Gamer or not, an internet bill is not a monthly fee for a game any more than a gas/electric bill is a fee for a game. You were just riding a lucky break the entire time you weren't paying for internet, and even if the unsecured network was sufficient for non-gaming purposes, you shouldn't expect that to last forever. (This is all assuming you don't like living under rocks and consider internet a necessity).
As for the hardware, a single payment of under $1000 that will last you years is relatively cheap for a hobby. Also, a decent computer can be useful for much more than gaming.

Does this mean you'll be showing up to more of the Ottawa LANs?
I'd like a rematch from the first LAN. Not killing a single zealot of yours hurt.....

wish I could join you Kurt

UPDATE: This is fucking bullshit. My computer has crashed worse than I've ever seen a computer crash. I got the computer only 2-3 months ago. I tried to start SC this morning, and my computer shuts off after running sc2 for 1 minute. It happens 2 more times, and then blue screen of death comes... WTFING HELL now my computer wont even start....

There was this bird that chirped in my ear something about certain graphics cards and runaway framerates... But really, when shit like this happens it can be basically anything.
