The human brain works by connecting ideas. Apparently, your brain thought "just flying" would be implausible and therefore connected it to swimming.

Whenever I fly in my dreams it's the same thing. Like forcing yourself upwards through a thick air.
|
I experience similar patterns in my dreams. Most of my dreams seem like nothing I have ever imagined or thought about before. Pretty fascinating to think about.

you've only seen how its done, never felt what it feels like. you should go flying more so you get used to this feeling!

I had a dream where I was the guy in Taylor Swift's "fearless" song. Then I woke up

This is quite similar to how I 'fly' in my dreams.

Hmm... when I have flying dreams it's usually as a mode of transport.. I go "oh yeah", kinda tilt back and just float along...
Or when I actually properly fly in a dream I am way up high and it's just how you'd imagine it.. soaring like a bird. Sounds like you got robbed in the dream lottery.

I used to have tons of dreams about flying. Where I live, in California, every fall we get these wicked winds called the Santa Ana winds. They can blow over 50 consistently and sometimes I've heard them talk about them being hurricane force. Its really wild. I used to dream that I'd be at a crosswalk or something, and just start to put my hands out a bit and come off the ground a bit. Then with some concentration and proper angle, I fully start to float off the ground. Of course the wind is blowing like mad- and like all the cars and shit are stopping to watch my "flying" which eventually gets to darting around really fast? IDK how that would happen.
Like the poster above said, the theme of flying is pretty common, and your brain seems to want to tie it to something more "Real" to make the dream believable probably to suspend your disbelief a bit, and keep you in that dream state.

I can remember a long time ago I used to 'fall' in dreams sometimes but never fly....
My sister has said she's had flying dreams though

I rarely fly in dreams any more, but I have recurring dreams where I glide about a foot over the ground, able to change direction and move about as fast as a brisk walk. Usually I think it's real until I wake up. In flying dreams, I always know it's not real.
Still doesn't beat that time I beat Sauron in a game of StarCraft with the whole world at stake.
What? He came to earth in an asteroid that landed in my neighbour's garden. It was the only logical conclusion.

I can't remember my last dream. I know everyone dreams on a nightly basis but I literally never, ever remember them...

I somehow learned to notice that I do dream while I'm in a dream by noticing little things that would be weird in reality. Therefore whatever dream I have I can start flying or doing anything I want. Even tho I have to "try" like a few times to start and focusing really hard on the "it's just a dream thing". My flights are usually normal tho, as you would imagine it.
It's one of the best things ever happened to me :D
(they often end pretty quickly after I noticed... but at least sometimes they last for a bit.)

I double jump in dreams after I play too much melee but I cannot think of a game that fits this type of flying. Have you ever experienced a game or movie that reminds you of swimming/flying like this?

Was this before or after you smoked up? ;D
All my dreams are pretty lame, I wish I was able to fly in mine =/

Only dream about flying I've ever had (or at least that I can remember) was pretty crazy and ended up with me "losing my powers" and falling on spikes in some creepy place, kinda like a Mortal Kombat stage, and then waking up.
