Sent to my friends who listen to ratatat and they also like it! :3 What software/equipment are you using? I know a few people trying to do what you're doing but are stuck at the fl studio stage. =] thanks! i use ableton with various VSTs, primarily guitar rig 3, and reason for redrum. i also sample some background water sounds and windtunnel things and play with EQing and compressing and just seeing what sounds i like. i'm new at this stuff so i really don't really use many fancy programs, most of it is me recording myself and messing around. learning the programs is really just like learning an instrument, just persistence! Nations was okay - transitions need a little work but other than that it was solid. I hope you keep making more of these, as you'll improve the more you produce. awwwwesome that one is my favorite too! do you have specific transitions for nations that stand out needing work? the second coming of the chorus bugs me but i don't really know what to do about it - i'll take another look at it in a few months (i'm so sick of listening to loops of these songs over and over, i think i have heard every song literally at least 300 times) On March 10 2010 12:23 Barbarne wrote:+ Show Spoiler + First, I study modern composition (modern as in Claude Debussy and onwards) so this is not my perticular area and secondly I'm not that good at it yet. Halogen: I feel that the rythm is kind of disconnected. Maybe it's a part of the genre, or something you were trying to do, but I feel that the interesting guitar and the whole acompaniment would give of a much more confident vibe if everything followed the same beat/meter. I'm guessing that you press record and then play the sounds that you want and then try to mix them together, because I recognize the slight off beat feel from when I try to record instead of writing notes. Then again, it might be something you are trying to do, but honestly I think a detectable pulse would pick this track up instantly. Nations: No problems at all with the pulse here, and not too much I'd like to say. One thing that bugged me was the part around 3:12 were the (main?) guitar theme is playing and there's a sort of answer, also written in guitar I think. While the first answer fits in with the theme, the second which consists of two rapid notes feel syncopated/off beat or whatever, I wonder if you hear that as well, and if that's a concious choice by you. Either way, good melody/themes. You are not alone: First thing I noticed was that at 1:22 where the guitar picks up (I'd like to know what that style of playing is called, I basically know nothing about guitar), I felt that you should have prepared it, since the transition was not at all smooth, maybe with just two quick notes of the bass note in that chord, just so that you don't jump straight into it. The rest of the track has minute problems with what I wrote above about unneccesary "answers" that might not fit in perfectly and maybe some small divergence from the pulse. This is after having listened a few times, I sincerely hope you take my fresh impressions to account and hopefully learn something from them. All in all, I think this is pretty good for amateur level, keep up the good work. i really like this, it's super interesting to hear from someone studying music. a lot of your comments are about the rhythm, and though i am trying to experiment with (especially) percussion there's definitely going to be bad writing or recording sloppiness. i'll try to keep in mind keeping things more coherent. also at 1:22 i've got a bunch of guitar lines going - i have a guitar panned to the right playing this riff with a bunch of harmonics, a rhythm one to the left that kinda supports the bass, and the lead is centered. i don't know if any of those have a specific style of guitar playing, i'm not very familiar with this either. i just play whatever haha On March 10 2010 15:47 azndsh wrote: liking it... I like the guitar and structure, but I think the meandering and inconsistent drums, scattered sounding hats, is not really my thing. I like a more consistent beat. I really think some more bass work would give it alot more depth too. VERY ratatatesque, you def accomplished that | ||
