Hey TL,
Hoping to get some help with some SC2 issues I've been having of late. A while back I built this computer with a 5770 HD, and had problems in game where I would experience a 3-5 second screen freeze, which would be followed by a screen refresh.
"Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered." would appear as a warning, and then it'd work fine.
Earlier this year I bought the 6850 HD when it was on sale because I thought it might just be a faulty GPU, but the problems still persist. I've tried many things already - complete driver clean with GPU and reinstall AMD drivers straight from the site, I've tried tinkering around with CPU voltages in the BIOS (apparently this card doesn't allow you to change GPU voltage), I've made sure all my drivers were up to date and I've also tried earlier drivers.
I tried searching the issue everywhere but I only got very vague solutions that I tried but didn't work (usually they were "reinstall graphics drivers").
I normally play on all Ultra, but I experimented with lowering the graphics settings and I still experience the same issues.
It might not be a GPU-related problem, idk. Anyone know anything else that could potentially be an issue? I'm getting kind of desperate because this really really sucks.
System Specs: os: win7 ultimate 64bit mobo: EVGA P55 SLI E655 cpu: i5 750 @ 2.67 GHz (not overclocked) ram: Corsair 8 GB DDR3 ram gpu: gigabyte 6850 hd radeon factory oc version
Super thanks in advance <3 ^^

You don't change GPU settings in BIOS, you change it through software such as MSI Afterburner. You need to go into advanced options for MSI Afterburner to unlock the voltage option.
|
i've already tried MSI afterburner - apparently it's actually something that has to do with the card the OC version of the 6850 HD apparently has voltage settings that aren't easily editable or something. in any case MSI afterburner doesn't let me change the GPU voltage settings even after checking the boxes in options and putting the quote in the ini file.
sorry for the confusion, i didn't put that in the OP. thanks anyway though

Could that really be it?
Voltage? This sounds like a zombie driver to me.
|
I also have a 6850 and I was having issues like you describe, except worse. Mine resulted in a blue screen and an auto restart. I googled the BCC code and a variety forums said it was a GPU driver issue. I rolled back my driver to catalyst version 12.1 and have been symptom free since.
Your issue might not be as simple as mine turned out to be, but it is worth a shot.

Hmm, I'll be following this thread. I have the same gigabyte radeon 6850, I haven't noticed this trouble, but I have had some strange cursor trouble that seems to result from program conflicts between browsers and SC2. I'll be following the thread, and if I run into anything as I search I'll let you know.. Good Luck!

alright, trying a rollback to 10.1 (CCC and all that). i tried flashing bios earlier but that actually went terribly wrong and the computer refused to start up. i had to put in the 5770 with the 6850 and manually reflash the old bios T_T
that was scary.

dunno if it worked - i just restarted my comp (turned it off, and made sure all the connections were tight). something wasn't actually fully plugged in, it'd be great if that was the issue

Mine sounds like the exact same problem, same warning and everything. I have a radeon HD 6700M. Except after the screen flickers, theres a chance my computer will go to the blue screen, how long it takes always varies, and ill have to restart it. Is there someway to fix this? Or does anyone know what the problem is?
|
same problem, Iv tried various things but still have the problem with a 6950, I didnt yet reinstall into older drivers.

fixed all my ATI related driver timout/bluescreens for about almost 2 months now. Its better than constantly switching drivers and hasnt really caused any differences in my computer. I assume this works for all GPUS so ppl with Nvidia problems this should help as well.
Another thing you can do is go into power settings-> and advanced-> PCI express ->Link State Power Management -> off
I did this as well after registry fixes and no bluescreens for almost 2 months now, hope this helps. Another thing is turn off AA under ATI catalyst completely. ATI doesnt play well with AA from my experiences.

Just turned off Link State Power Management - haven't gotten a hang yet! thanks a ton. turning off tdrdelay before that absolutely crashed my computer actually lol

I have a Asus 6850 and I don't have any problems whatsoever, so I don't know if only the gigabytes 6850 are affected.

i think the factory-overclocked asus 6850 has a voltage tweak that works in MSI afterburner and other voltage tweaking software. i think most of the problems im having so far (which still haven't really popped up ^^) could be solved with a higher gpu voltage
|
sorry to double post: got some hangs recently tweaking with msi afterburner. atm running intel burn test to see if there's a problem with my overclock i guess. also i've been experiencing the occasional mouse weirdness ingame as well.
edit: seems it still hangs even when i put it on medium... i don't think its the gpu. did some stress tests, doesn't seem to be any problem otherwise :S
|
Boblhead, could you be more specific about how to use the TDR registry keys you linked to? I have a laptop with periodic blue screens.
Thanks
|
I''ve had a 6850 a year now and have had 0 problems, its the best damn card ever I love it.
|
If you solve the mouse thing let me know, I haven't found anything worth posting I just reboot and it usually works from then on.
|
I have same card and had similar problems to what you describe. Mine solved uninstalling newer and using earlier driver versions. Hope you have success!
|
Huh. So I've been playing on Low graphics, and just got some hangs. Fishy... I'm starting to think it's definitely not GPU related.
