Don't post in this thread to say "gay gamers are like everyone else, why do they have a special thread?" It is something that has been posted numerous times, and this isn't the place for that discussion. For regular posters, don't quote the trolls.

I consider transexuality a seperate phenonemon than homo/bisex, since its a question of identity, not sex. It's no more appropriate to ask fags than straight folks on their opinion. I guess bisexual people are less likely to be bothered by the dick, though. As a transsexual I find shemale at least mildly offensive, and pretty much all my friends do as well. The thing is that there are trans* people who will swear up and down on the right to use ladyboy or tranny or w/e. You have to understand that this is a very small minority, and if you say that to the average trans woman she will take it as you being hostile. Considering the crazy amount of prejudice against trans people and that many have been abused/harassed in the past for it (read one study saying the average trans woman was more likely to have ptsd than a soldier returning from a tour of duty in afghanistan), it can be a reallllly big deal which words you choose to use or not. If she wants you to call her shemale, go for it. Just don't assume that all trans women want to be addressed in the same manner. If you (or anyone else) have any questions, feel free to post them here.

Beraters gonna berate. I find the discussion on what words are offensive to transgendered persons to be an interesting one. I'll admit I know nobody who would correct me were I to be offensive on the subject. User was temp banned for this post.

It was amazing to me as "just" a gay man how many new things I discovered coming to college oh so long ago. Pansexuality, Genderqueerness, Polyamory, the list goes on! All that matters when you discover something new is don't judge it and don't pester and address anyone with the respect and consideration you'd want for yourself :D Merry Whatever Holiday You Celebrate!!!

So, a person I went to hairschool with was a man (on the outside.) But dressed like a woman and called herself Barbie. She looked well put together, but was obviously a man dressed as a woman. Is this person Transgender, or Transexual and mainly, if you don't KNOW them, is it more appropriate to refer to that person as He/Him or She/Her? I just always called her Barbie, and said She.

You could always ask her which pronouns to use, but that's basically a reminder of 'hey, you don't pass'. So I would just use female pronouns (esp in this case since its female clothes and not an androgynous look).

I'm not 100% on this with the way both words are thrown around these days, but I'm sure that transexual is used to describe someone who went through surgery and treatment to become the opposite sex. Since Barbie is still visibly male by your description I think transgender would be the right word to use. As for the second question, it does seem like a strange paradox to say the words Barbie and 'he' in the same sentence, so you're right to use she. It is the gender they're using to identify themselves with after all, so she would be your best bet. I've got a girlfriend that works over at Sephora with a male to female transgender that's referred to as she, but he's not at all insulted if someone ever calls him he based on his appearance. I've also had the experience of working with drag queens as a stagehand at a San Francisco theater. The funny thing is that none of them identify themselves as females, but because of the way they dress and their attitudes always address each other as 'she'.

I never had any trouble asking what pronoun to use or to what degree a transexual acknowledges his or her gender. Bear in mind, though, I haven't met many, and all of them in shared liberal ideology. If a he is evidently a she, that's reason to congratulate on having the guts to defy convention and really realise who you are. I have a hard time seeing why transexuals "in general" would take such great offense from gender misinterpretation. I'd wager it's a result of social insecurity, which I guess you'd have a hard time overcoming being stuck in an incorrect gender for big part of your life, your ideals shunned by society, but then the insecurity is the problem, not the pronoun.

Let me get something clear, THE ABOVE IS WRONG. First, legal and ecclesiastical embrace of homosexual unions is more likely to undermine the institution of marriage and produce other negative effects than it is to make fidelity and longevity the norm for homosexual unions. Second, and even more importantly, homosexual unions are not wrong primarily because of their disproportionately high incidence of promiscuity (especially among males) and breakups (especially among females). They are wrong because “gay marriage” is a contradiction in terms. As with consensual adult incest and polyamory, considerations of commitment and fidelity factor only after certain structural prerequisites are met. User was banned for this post.
