I have replays available if you want to see them, but I'm not really asking for strategy advice so much as venting about how I feel like my ZvP style bores me.
Generally, I feel like I can win against Protoss fairly straightforwardly: 1. hatch first, watch out for cheese, and scout for potential 4gate (I know that at higher levels you can't get away with this as easily because people are better at cannoning when they see the opportunity) 2. Hold off the 2base timing push after scouting what it is (pure gateway, sometimes with blink/colossus/stargaze/ occasionally archonlot), generally with a primarily roach army with a few infestors if there's time 3. deny the third as long as possible while saturating your own third and grabbing a fourth. Get upgrades, a spire, hive tech then greater spire. 4. Use up spare lings to constantly poke and harass and keep Protoss in his base and prevent expos as much as possible 5. Turtle up and Build up a broodlord/Infestor army and get rid of spare lings, while keeping a small roach army 6. Watch out for dt's at all times 7. Attack at 200/200 with your gas heavy army against what should be an army unable to really deal with your army, even if the have voids since they should be on three bases at most so there wont be enough gas for much else.
However I feel like this style is really boring since it's basically preventing all the Protoss timings and turtling up to a 200/200 engagement that generally always works as long as I play well and don't mess up my defense. Ive tried other styles of play, like being super aggressive with kings against 3gate expand or even switching to Infestor with banelings drops or 2base hydra drops or other stuff like muta harass. Infestor drops but I find that all that does is distract from my overall strategy and make my end goal slower and weaker.
I know that people say that it's best to play a single strategy, especially if it's just for ladder which is always bo1 and improve it and refine it, but I'm finding that I would like to at least know other ways to play to mix things up. Ideally an all-in style would be what I'm looking for, especially against a 3gate expand or FFE.
I'm not really sure what I'm asking here other than to vent and see if other people agree with me. I'm in platinum as well, if that gives any context to what I'm talking about.

Your playstyle seems like the mindset of the high masters zergs that I play on ladder. Just keep doing what works IMO.

IdrA used this build a few times right before MLG Anahiem. I don't know if it might be out of date, or he is just saving this for some special match. Anyway, It should still be viable because it isn't all-in. It is a Roach/+1 Ling attack with 35 drones.
+ Show Spoiler +9 Ov 15 Hatch 16 Gas 15 Pool @100% Pool -Make Queens -Speed -Pull 2 off of Gas (have one mining)
(Now here is the important stuff) @6:00 (you should have around 100 gas around this time) -Build Evolution Chamber -Build Roach Warren @100% Evo - +1 Melee - Put all 3 drones on Gas - Make the second gas
*Use all of your gas on Roaches, drone up to 35 drones. When you reach 35 Drones, just make Roaches and Lings. Attack any Rocks blocking a 3rd.
@50% +1 Melee -Lair -3rd Gas
@100% Lair (Upgrade finishes in line with Lair) - Make your attack hit. So bring your Roaches early. Lings can catch up. -4th Gas -Roach Speed -Overlord Speed
**Start your third and drone up while you're attacking. Get an Infestor Pit while you take your third, and build a 4th Macro Hatch while you take your third or around that time.
**=This is where it deviates based on scouting,.
Your attack should consists of 16 Roaches and about 22 +1 Lings. I wouldn't use this on Tal'Darim and Shakuras though. (easy to defend Naturals) Instead of Roaches, you can take a fast 3rd with basically the same build.
Then it will transition into a normal game. If they get the third up, research drops. Those are always fun and pretty good when they are stretched between 3 bases.

Well tbh protoss doesn't really have that many options... So there's no real reason to play differently. Especially since you aren't one of those idiot zergs that tries to take like 5 bases@ the 15 min mark, lol. Infestor/Blord is pretty damn difficult to stop, even as terran with a direct counter to both (ghosts). As toss, counter-deathballing gets screwed by fungals, skytoss nailed by corruptor/infested terran, ground heavy (chargelot archon or some variation) will get nailed by fungals and pathing messed up by broodlings...
Infestors ability to shut down pretty much all toss play+toss not being very strong makes for a very dull matchup.

go mutas and it will be a lot more fun its viable on any map even at the highest levels if you do it right, and can be done safely against any strategy.
|
Ling/Muta is fun and challenging, also you can go Ultras instead of Broodlords to mix things up. Also watch some of Morrow's games, his style is awesome too.
|
Muta/Ling can be nice as it often results in crazy base trade scenarios. If you Muta/Ling most ZvP's you'll have much more experience in those scenarios and so will be at an advantage.
|
How does Muta/ling play out against Colossus/Stalker armies? I feel like that composition would basically steamroll my army. Which I guess is what is meant by basetrading. But I feel like I would be very vulnerable to a 2base timing.
|
The correct response is Blink Stalker/HT/Archon, if they go Colossus their antiair is only Stalkers and you can just focus his Colossus and he will have a really tough time defending your harass. Or you can just baserace (not sure which one is the correct option, I'm only low Masters)

your style sounds pretty much the way it is supposed to be played right now. but I agree zvp , pvz , both sides the MU is kinda stale.
|
One thing you could do which IMO makes the style better and especially more fun, is to get drop and drop lings/infestors all over the place while stalling for broodlords, it's often more effective than runbys. Ret does this style a lot on his stream.
|
Sums up exactly how I feel from the protoss side. Take 2nd when safe, try a random 2 base timing push, fall back if fails, take 3rd, prepare for festor / broodlord with blink/templar.
(And I usually lose to festor / broodlord because I'm bad.... most of my wins are from the 2base pushes. Dunno how else to play it though.)
|
Did this feel stale to you? viOlet vs JYP?
|
While I bitch non-stop about PvZ to my Z friends, I find it the most fun matchup overall since I have to find a way to break that exact system you describe. I get a bigger rush from winning a lategame PvZ than anything else in SC2.
