Saga Hires Former Starcraft Developer Dana Massey posted on 5 Feb 2007, 03:11 PM
Making an RTS? Making an MMORTS? Why not hire someone who worked for Blizzard's benchmark RTS Starcraft. Saga announced today that they've added just such a person in the form of former Brood Wars lead programmer Dallan Christensen.
SAGA team led by Starcraft: Brood War's Lead Programmer
Orem, UT, January 10, 2007 - SAGA (www.playsaga.com) is a new Massively-Multiplayer Online Real-time Strategy (MMORTS) game from Wahoo Studios. The development team has been led for over a year by veteran programmer Dallan Christensen, best known for his role as lead programmer on Starcraft: Brood War.
"It's been a challenge, but the concept has huge potential," says Dallan, sporting a hunting cap, lit only by the glow of a half-dozen computer screens. "We're blazing a lot of trails, doing a lot of things that have never been done before in the RTS genre. But at this point we're pretty much there-we've succeeded in delivering the SAGA game design we set out to achieve."

Interesting. I wonder when he left Blizzard though.

mmorts, sounds like something I heard before. Mankind anyone ?

sigh up for the closed alpha.. I did..
I figure they are making an mmorts based on a guy from Blizzard...
the people here... quite a bit of experience with RTS..... whos better to test than Teamliquid.net exactly.

I feel that we will never see this game. The exposure is non existant, and the community is about the size of a 3 square meter room.
The concept is good, but it will never comes out.

Concept is basically like a card game where instead of having to pay for a monthly fee as in other MMPORGs you have to pay for your army. No thanks.

Shattered Galaxy was an awesome game imo, i hope they make an even better MMORTS.
Ultimately though, within 10 years (at the latest) we're going to have several MMORTS to choose from.

Need screenshots.
I think that the booster pack idea is a good idea.
BUT, I don't think that many SC players would be willing to shell out money every month (or whenever their timetable has units released) to stay on the forefront.
I feel that this game is much more along the lines of a MMORPG than a true RTS. Just as Huxley (MMOFPS) is far from being Q3/Q4/CS, I think that the MMORTS genre will appeal to a more casual player than the ones that watch OGN/MBC.

Booster pack sounds gay, IMHO. To macro like Oov all I need to do is write a check... Granted, my signature does take some pen micro, but still.

mmorts wtf o.O. how does that work?

at first, i read the name SAGA and SC developers, I thought it would be a space sci-fi RTS. So I signed up, hoping to get another kick out of Shatter Galaxies. But after seeing the 2 SS, this is like meh... bronze age AoE???

how does this work? can someone explain how it can be massively multiplayer?
is it simply a large amount of people ffa/teams?
+ haha, this is obviously a pre alpha game @ most of the character models.
+ seems like a very complex system, maybe too complex.

Just putting all players on one big ass map and have them fight sc style would create mess. I didn't find nothing specific about the game only that you build defensive structures and can attack other defense structures, so one idea that comes to me is that it could be something like ogame + rts but I am not sure exactly on haw they plan to do it I got many different ideas all that have some cons and pros. As for the defending I guess that you just build structures and pc controls it (since I don't see haw it can be done otherwise, you may be able to just attack online players but that would be very limiting, and bad for more reasons).

I was thinking about this on the way home from work today, and the "booster pack" income model makes no sense.
-Every lost battle has a double negative effect. You're losing in the game, plus you know that you're also going to have to pay more just to stay in the game. -Only hardcore players are going to form your income base. Because eventually it will get worked out that you need to spend x amount to be competitive, and that's going to turn off people considering playing the game. -How much you spend has a relative effect on your success. Rather than having a flat monthly fee where players' success would be determined by skill level, you instead are differentiating players based on how much they are willing to pay, and that's really gay.

Oh yeah that sound horribole, they should just take fee, buying advantage for real world money in game is bad. It is not that monthly fee are so bad if servers cost but they just are to big (monthly fee).
|
It sounds like Travian with 3D graphics and a monthly fee.
