The Swarmfestors

Hello teamliquid !

I'm currently experimenting a ZvZ composition.

It uses only swarm hosts and infestors.

The idea is to get to the lair tech, build infestators first to be safe against muta/roach and then build like 15 swarm host. Then, spam infestors. Get some speedlings for runbyes and to have a buffer between 2 Swarm Host waves.

The idea is to push slowly through the map while turtling like a madman in your bases.

It's a bit like mech in TvT.

The turtle, eating slowly everything though the map

I'm currently having like 90% winrate with this composition. But i'm only gold on my hots account so...

Here is a good replay showing all the weaknesses and the strenghs of this strategy. I'm suffering a lot from runbyes because i didn't turtle enough. But still, i manage to win because this composition is... strong :D

http://drop.sc/278626

I'll edit this post when i'll go more deeply into this strategy.

In the replay the opponent tried to use broodlords. He didnt had so much broods. I spammed IT when my locust wave attacked and fungled the broodlords. Stucked above the infested terran, they died quickly.

lol, the title made me think the OP wanted to merge the swarm host and infestor into one unit as some kind of balance rant ^^

you don't need to make swarmhosts while turtling. Swarm hosts are meant to apply midgame pressure. If you want to just turtle, infestor/spine crawler works fine by itself. Save your gas for BL.

With Swarm Hosts strategy you are saving up a lot of ressources actually. In a lot of game, it ends with a 15k mineralz 8k gas in bank.

Broods die too easily to ITs/Corruptors/Fungles.

Swarmhost doesnt have this problem, because its burrowed.

And broods take too much time to come. You need units midgame, and i'm using the swarmhosts and infestor.
WIth swarmhost and infestor you can kill all lategame units without much problems.

That's very interesting! I'm assuming you need some Queens yeah for gasless anti-air option and faster creep spread?

Because this is similar to TvT style Mech, I do wonder how you would respond to a similar response from the "Bio" player (probably playing Infestor/Roach or Infestor/Ling). They just expand more than you, and then switch into a BL/Corruptor army, to negate all the resources you put into Swarm Hosts/Spines (like Bio players will switch to BC/Viking to negate all the Tanks on the ground).

Yes, i use a 4 queen 5:00 gas opening to get some queens early on. Queens are good against muta players with infestor support.
I also think the response is very similar to the TvT one. Expand a lot, runby everywhere...

As the swarmhost/infestor player, if the opponent is expanding a lot, you can runby with lings and destroy bases with 2 burrowed infestors full of energy.

Rename thread to something special, like:

- Infestor Host
- Mushroom Infestation
- Swarm Growth
- Infestation (Pit) Snowball
- Swarmfestors - probably best name

I think, the only counter is Ultralisks with splitted banelings against locusts

This happened at first in HOTS. Now of days zergs are going mutalisks in hots to counter swarmhosts. Right now if zerg goes muta and the other goes infestor, the infestor player is going to lose as the muta player should be adding swarmhosts to his composition and the zerg going infestor isn't going to be able to get enough of his own swarmhosts compared to the muta player.

I haven't seen a player who went muta - into swarm hosts lose vs a zerg who went infestor first.

When I think of something else, something will go here

Maybe I'm just a noob, but could you elaborate as to why the Muta>Swarm Host player beats the Infestor player? Why is one player able to make more Swarm Hosts than the other? (assuming the Muta player doesn't catch the opponent unprepared for Mutas).

Or does it just have to do with the fact that the Muta player has map control and so can get a positional advantage with their Swarm Hosts?

Well 2 reasons, for starters the player who is going infestors first needs to get a few because otherwise spread out mutas will just kill them. So they have to invest a lot of gas into infestors, say they make 5-6 infestors that's a good 750-900 gas on infestors. The muta player doesn't need to make that many, say 8-9 which is equal in gas count sure, but then comes the next part.

Infestors suck vs swarmhosts, just a fact right now. Infestors can't do anything but fungal to reveal and that's about it because the locusts are strong and kill infestors/IT's really fast. So if the infestor player adds swarmhosts himself, the problem is the zerg has air control. Swarmhosts can't hit air and you will have an overseer while your opponent will struggle to maintain one thanks to the mutalisk.

Also the infestor player has to get pathogean glands (I don't remember the cost of the upgrade) so I think this is what makes the difference between both styles. The zerg going muta into swarmhosts doesn't get the pathogean glands and uses all his gas after his initial mutalisks into swarmhost + locust upgrade. If the infestor player gets the locust upgrade to that is even less gas for his swarmhosts and 200 gas is 2 less swarmhosts.

Mutalisks are just great because you can snipe the swarmhosts and if you spread out well you can just kill the enemy's swarmhost while your swarmhosts do damage as well.

I dont think muta swarmhost is a hardcounter to infestor swarmhost. Without infestors, swarmhost can be easily busted by speedbanes.
It's a matter of how well each player executer the strategy.

I don't see how speed banes are going to beat swarmhosts, specially with mutas/roaches right by them and swarmhosts shouldn't all be bunched up either.

I mean that is what I am seeing and doing, I rarely lose when I go muta vs a player that starts out infestors in hots just because then I use swarmhosts and win. Only time I lost with it so far was when both our armies missed each other so it was a base trade and I was stupid enough to go back instead of committing .

Speedbanes are destroying swarmhost hard, because you dont need detection :p

Thats actually how i take an advantage when the game is going swarmhost vs swarmhost

Thanks Existor for the images and titles ! :D

Who can i pm to rename the topic title ?

For 75 gas (3 banelings) you can clear your way (and temporary kill all locusts) directly to swarm hosts
