Announced today was a collaboration between SteelSeries and GUNNAR Optiks named SteelSeries Scope, professional eyewear for gaming that has been endorsed by Evil Geniuses own Jordan “n0thing” Gilbert. Following the break you can find the official press release, detailing this new product which is available now for $99 USD.

CHICAGO, Oct.20, 2010 – SteelSeries, the leading manufacturer of gaming peripherals and accessories, along with strategic partner GUNNAR Optiks, today introduced SteelSeries Scope digital performance eyewear for gamers in both prescription and nonprescription. The new line of co-branded pro gaming glasses powered by GUNNAR i-AMP lens technology is designed to improve visual efficiency, endurance, and recovery during gaming sessions. Expanding upon GUNNAR’s line of advanced gaming eyewear, SteelSeries collaborated with the company to customize a design with a larger, extended lens and a lightweight, comfortable frame. The eyewear provides gamers a visually enhanced experience while minimizing eyestrain and fatigue.

“We’ve built our brand on the belief that gamers want peripherals and accessories that provide a competitive advantage that will help improve their experience and game,” said Bruce Hawver, SteelSeries CEO. “When we announced our strategic partnership with GUNNAR earlier this year, it was our goal to collaborate on a product that would provide gamers with that same solution of an improved experience. The SteelSeries Scope is the result of that collaboration and we’re excited to bring it to market.”

“Partnering with SteelSeries has been a smart and beneficial alignment for both of our brands. With the introduction of the SteelSeries Scope, we feel confident that gamers will appreciate and value the efforts of this collaboration”, said Rob Aarnes, President, GUNNAR Optiks. “SteelSeries’ knowledge and feedback from professional gamers about design and fit is what makes SteelSeries Scope so unique to both PC and console gaming.”

SteelSeries Scope pro gaming glasses include a larger lens for extended peripheral vision, improving overall coverage and adding a consistent transition of sight. The new glasses also feature a SteelSeries-branded flat temple, designed for comfort while wearing gaming headsets.

More than just the design of the frames and temples, SteelSeries Scope lenses are optimized to enhance a user’s visual performance. GUNNAR’s proprietary i-AMP® lens technology is an optical platform that includes the following components that create this visual advantage:
– iONik lens tint optimizes light transmission and color contrast to filter out harsh light and reduce eyestrain.
– i-Fi multi-stage lens coatings filter transmitted light and protect the lens, with anti-reflective properties that cuts down on distracting glare and extraneous light.
– diAMIX™ lens material offers an optically pure viewing experience with ultra-light, ergonomic properties;
– fRACTYL™ lens geometry mimics nature to aid the natural focusing power of the cornea and lens while creating a preferential ocular microclimate.
– Rx lens available in the Scope frame through Carl Zeiss Vision (see Eye Care Professional for pricing).

SteelSeries Scope Pro Gaming Glasses are $99.99/ €99.99 MSRP and can be ordered online now at both SteelSeries.com and GUNNARS.com. To find out more about the new eyewear as well as giveaways and promotions be sure to check out SteelSeries and GUNNAR on Facebook and Twitter @SteelSeries & @GUNNAROptiks.

EG's cs 1.6 team uses these. Who knows if they actually work without trying them?

mightve been nice a few years ago when i still had a CRT monitor.
notice that progamers that used to wear progamer-glasses no longer wear them.
also they were nowhere near $99.

Sounds like some standard anti-glare glasses with a design fit for headphones use and just the right field of view for gaming. Nice that they're including prescription possibility with this.

Nerds rejoice! Glasses to make nerds more nerdier.

On a serious note: How is this product expected to sell? I don't see a REAL benefit in using it and I doubt other people would either.

Now a mouse bungee.... THAT'S a practical accessory.

I remember trying something like this on at Pax East.

Basically it makes stuff like your computer monitor seem less like something blasting light at you and more like looking at a picture in a book.

Supposedly people like baseball players wear similar glasses/contacts to make their vision more sharp. Maybe these glasses are like this?

"fRACTYL lens geometry mimics nature to aid the natural focusing power of the cornea and lens while creating a preferential ocular microclimate."

Mimicking nature to create an ocular microclimate? Who writes this stuff? And why is all the supposedly trademarked technology using alternating caps like a 14 year old thought it up

Yeah, these are quite the joke! The players who wear (and swear [by]) them are all payed a fortune to do so by GUNNAR. Every legit non-biased gamer/journalist who's ever tried them have confirmed them to be [very expensive] snake oil.

for anyone actually interested in anti-glare glasses for their eyestrain, amazon has a bunch for less than half the price of these. the most popular ones don't have the "progamer" yellow tint in case you don't want to look dorky in an office setting.

What happened to wearing just normal glasses? And I don't think that people who don't play like atleast 8+h a day would be interested in these glasses unless they wanna show-off to their nerd friends.

but i sure as hell could wear it for a Job interview!
Wearing an awesome Tuxedo coming through the door like a boss /sits down at chair.

interviewer : Hey that is a nice glasses you are wearing, what is it? anything special?
me: Im sorry i am not authorized to answer your question for my glasses are top secret classified.
interviewer - Your hired!
me- Good thing otherwise i would let my higher ups pull some strings to make things not so beautiful anymore for you
interviewer- o_O

$100 for gaming glasses, really? People are constantly pitching unattractive, useless, products in the SC Scene for 200% markup, it's getting OLD. This isn't an established market, perhaps a deal would be nice instead of trying to screw over your own nerds. Boycott this nonsense. Granted this is just my opinion, I would be in full support if I didn't believe the prices were outrageous.

(Example, Razer's SC2 Keyboard/Mice/Headset. Glowing Headsets to check your APM...REALLY? Now you too can look like a disco ball while playing SC! Only $300!) *End of ragerant*

You can get the exact same thing in perscription for $50 from a regular sunglass company. the technology has been around for nearly a decade.

They're just remarketing it after designing headphone-friendly frames
