Hey guys,
I am the creator of sc2sig.com and just had another idea: custom divisions.
I don't know if blizzard will add custom divisions ingame soon, but i could build a website where you could create custom divisions.
A custom division would then consist of you and anybody you'd like to add, showing every division-member in a table sorted by league, points, rank. (In a way similar to "my friends rankings" on your ingame profile).
Do you think this does make sense? Would you use it?
No, there wouldn't be any in-custom-division matches or game integration, just a way to display any kind of group like your guild, your friends, etc.
This data could then also be used to compare custom divisions by calculating averages, i.e.:
guild x average wlr: 55% guild x average league: platin guild x average points: 300
guild y average wlr: 60% guild y average league: diamond guild y average points: 500
And, at last, to further recycle things i already built, i could add self-updating signatures for your custom division. Think of this whole thing as the group- or guildversion of sc2sig.com.
I haven't started to build this yet because i'd like to hear your feedback on this first, if anybody would actually use it.
UPDATE 20.8.2010: Ok, BETA is available at http://sc2divisions.com/
Please report any bug you find or any strange behaviour you see. As i said before, i am not satisfied with the interface yet as it doesn't seem that intuitive/easy to use for me.
The player table is sorted this way: league descending (diamond -> bronze), points descending, rank ascending.

I think it's an awesome idea, I find that people like you really help the community insomuch as you innovate before blizzard can ^^. I can see it becoming an enormous success! If you need beta testers, I'd be happy to help.

I really really like this idea, if Blizzard doesn't add clans/guilds soon. However i'd be afraid if they did hold to their word and incorporated clans to BNet 2.0 and you had just made your own custom divisions. It might just be too soon to tell.

i think this is an AWESOME idea for Teams. teams having their own inside ladder to be able to compare to each other much easier than what they are doing now. that was wat first came to my mind.
edit:
as post b4 me said, we have no clan support atm so we have zero idea what will be coming. :-/

Great idea to keep track of friends and teams, I know that some divisions are very lackluster in terms of quality and if you could just make your own with you and your buddies it could promote a little bit more compeition.

I am praying that come blizzcon 2010, blizz will announce the complete re-work of Bnet 2.0
|
I think this is a fantastic idea = )
|
This combined with chat-rooms would be amazing.
|
This is pretty cool. I'd definitely take part in it.
|
great idea. i will definitely support this.
|
Sounds fun but will have to consider if there are any ways to abuse this to help your score.

Don't we all wish this could be true...

This is such a logical extension of the division system it's a wonder Blizzard didn't implement it, especially considering their goal of fostering a new social community. Xbox Live games allow you to filter Leaderboards by Friends Rank, so a custom division as you describe makes perfect sense.
Things may get a little confusing if you have friends that are in different leagues, but I'm sure Blizzard could come up with some way to present the information that isn't confusing. Absolutely in support of this idea.

It would also help organising tournaments.

Do you really want custom divisions? :D
Great idea.

We need a Teamliquid division to motivate me to play.

I have the feeling that some of you misunderstand what i can do and what i can not do:
I can let you build custom divisions on an external website, playerstats will get updated daily. You can watch a list with all your friends including their league, division, rank and points. This will give you a nice looking division page with some statistics for your friends or guildmates.
I can not add the custom league functionality to the game itself. You can not join that custom division ingame or play against custom league members through the game itself. Everything is and stays on the website. This will not and probably won't ever influence your ingame experience in any way.

I don't want to give you the wrong idea about my reply. I'm saying this is something Blizzard should have done from the start. The fact that we'd have to visit an external website to do something that should have been core functionality is disappointing and somewhat of an inconvenience, but that website would fill a key role for many users in my estimation.
