first game
players are ordered according to the order they signed up (this rewards people for showing up on time). in order, each player must choose who their opponent will be. if a player is chosen, they do not get to choose their opponent (their turn to choose will be skipped). this goes on until everyone is playing. if there is an odd number of players, the last person, who does not get picked, will receive a free win (this rewards him for being so badass no one wanted to play him).
there will be a list of maps allowed in the tourney. for game1, the player who was chosen (by the other guy) will get to choose the map (from the list).
second game
people will finish at different times. the first two people to finish will be known as 1st winner and 1st loser respectively. they are waiting for the next available opponents, 2nd winner and 2nd loser respectively. winners will get to play losers (as a reward for winning), thus, the 1st winner ends up playing the 2nd loser. the 2nd winner ends up playing the 1st loser. the process repeats as people finish, e.g. 3rd winner vs 4th loser, 4th winner vs 3rd loser, etc.
the loser will get to choose map, in this case (from the list).
if there is an odd man out, the next winner will have to play him instead of waiting for a loser. therefore, a loser will take his place as the odd man out. it's only fair.
after those games
after a player has followed through the process for the first two games, it is much simpler.
players with less than 2 wins will play the player who is first available for them to play that also has less than 2 wins. the odd man out, the guy waiting, will always be available first, of course. you do not play the same person you just beat, either. you wait for a different opponent, or take the one waiting, if applicable. in other words, these players are "still in round 1" and thus "only play round 1 players."
players with at least 2 wins but less than 4 will follow the same rules, except only playing people with at least 2 wins and less than 4. simply, "round 2 players play only round 2 players."
players with at least 4 wins but less than 6 are "round 3 players", same as above. they only play eachother.
all of this keeps going on, perpetually. losers can keep on playing and maybe even catch up. this all encourages time to not be wasted, and rewards quicker wins (which are good for everyone who wants to play a tournament and host one)
one more thing i forgot to mention, if a player is waiting for their next opponent, and a pair finishes the game they were in, and both are qualified to play the guy who was waiting, and it's just between the pair, he must play the winner of the pair (the guy who just won the last game between those two who just arrived). of course, if a qualified guy was already waiting, he is chosen before the pair. guy waiting > winner > loser. this rule is because a winner should never be the one made to wait. the reason it is different in the "first round" is because there will always be two pairs waiting, but in this case, there is not.
another thing i forgot, the player who has been waiting the longest, in this phase, chooses the map. this rewards the speedy players and thanks them for waiting.
the finals
the first player to get 6 wins will wait around for the next available player with 6 wins. these two people will play a bo3. in fact, everyone to reach 6 wins can play a bo3 with the next person who gets 6 wins. but the first two are the finalists. the winner of the bo3 is the winner of the tournament. the loser is 2nd place. the second bo3, if played, will be for 3rd place, etc. after these two bo3's are finished, no more bo3's will start, but any ones started already will get to finish. after that, the tourney is over, hopefully in less time than a single elim bo3 tourney, with more people getting to play more games, more accurate or at least interesting results, and more rewarding people for saving time wherever possible, inside and outside the game.
in the finals, or in these bo3 things at the end in general, the player who has been waiting the longest chooses the map for game1 (from list of course, like always). the loser chooses the map after that, etc.
some other notes
i know this format will not be perfect. it will be unfair to people who take their time. it will be unfair to people who can't stop cheeses. it will even be unfair to people who play terran and thus get stuck playing tvt and tvp. it will be unfair to people who get just plain unlucky and have to face games that just go long. but it will be interesting because everyone knows all this going into the tourney. they will know that in the back of everyone's mind, they would like to finish sooner rather than later. they will also know that if they don't think they're going to win, they should not waste time.
but those interesting enough consequences come with some benefits as a tradeoff: less waiting between games. players get to play a variety of players, much like a double elim bo1 format. worser players will get seperated from the winners more quickly, and everyone will get to play more games. the format can work for an odd number of players and does not have to be a power of 2. it can work for 15, 16, 17, 18, whatever. but it is confusing, potentially. i still want to give it a try.
ok, now when is fakesteve going to do this? comments ;-)
based on the first test run, more rules were invented

-if you refuse to choose a map from the "stupid gay" list or otherwise fail to cooperate, ur disqualified.
-in the event of a disqualification the last person you beat will magically steal your place (including your win/loss record and waiting position).
-last person picked when game1 is finished gets a free win. this means that as long as a game1 is still going on, ur basically still waiting for an opponent. u only get a free win if everyone else is done with their game1 and no opponent showed up for you, yet you showed up before all the game1's were done.
-you cannot play the same person in game1 and game2.
-if there are not enough people to go on, an earlier round will become the bo3 final instead.
