During phase 1 there was a call for players to name their account ESPORTS in response to Blizzard's stupid move of removing the identifier part of an account. Now they've added back identifiers, except they're even more retarded than the original.
To recap, if I make an account Spartan I will be assigned a random 3 (apparently no less and no more) digit letter to distinguish my self from other Spartans.
So what happens if there's already 999 Spartans and a 1000th person wants to be Spartan, too? Logic would say that any inactive Spartans would get deleted. Now there's 2 ways of measuring inactivity.
Method 1 would be like the current system Blizzard uses on Battle.net where any account not logged into for over 3 months is deleted. The problem there is.. what if you have 999 active Spartans? Does the 1000th player get 4 digits? Presumably yes, but now the number system just looks progressively uglier, lengthier, and harder to remember. Is "Spartan.3438" easier to remember than "Spartan.nk" or "Spartan.warrior"?
Method 2 would be to delete the least active player out of the 999. Now, what if that player is active, but just not as much as the other 998? Does he deserve to lose his name?
So going back to method 1 a little.. we all already know how retarded this number system is so I won't dive into it too much... at this point with the random number system Blizzard is taking away what little customization and uniqueness players have online on Battle.net. The fun part of the identifiers was that players could use it to group themselves in teams, clans, friends, and so forth. The whole point of the identifier system is for uniqueness and for easy friend adding. Sure, remembering 3 numbers can't be that hard (or can it?), but so is remembering one word that a person can sound out loud in their head (we all know that's much easier to remember than a random number).
It seems to me that Blizzard might as well go the full step since they're halfway there and just give everyone a random 8 digit string of numbers instead of letting them choose a name to go by. Hey, 33741341, want to play 2v2 with me and 13416341?
Anyhow, are we going to lash out against Blizzard again and name all our accounts ESPORTS, or even something new and more related, like REALID?
Poll: Would you name your account ESPORTS or REALID for phase 2?No. (224) 87% Yes. (34) 13% 258 total votes Your vote: Would you name your account ESPORTS or REALID for phase 2? (Vote): Yes. (Vote): No.
Edit: Changed the poll.

these name changing protests are ridiculous. blizz has stated several times that they dont care if they have 100,000 people with the same name. why do people keep making these threads?
|
i dont think it will work... especially in beta.
|
theres more than 1000 combinations for a 4 digit number
EDIT: nvm its 3 digits im dumb >_<

Video games are cool or whatev but you're a petulant child if you are actually angry irl about a video game naming system.
|
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't delete older accounts, and would instead just block the name "spartan" after they ran out of digits.. But yeah since it's only beta I might use the name ESPORTS for kicks.
|
play the game, never mind the rest, imo.
|
Didn't we have over 1000 people saying they would do it?
I'm doing it for the hilarity. I don't see why the f not.
|
They will just add 1 more digit available, making it worse.
|
well it's a simple way of showing solidarity amoung the community
It's the SC2 equiv of a pink ribbon or something similar. And it's a good watermark. If people are not upset enough to give up their name for a few weeks of beta then well... they are not just that upset.
If they are.. well maybe blizz need to pay attention.
And look.... no matter what they say... OF COURSE they are going to take notice if they see 10,000 people with the same name.
All that said. I'm happy overall. Far from perfect but I'm content

Your poll makes no sense.

And lol if everyone do the same nick, it would break that 3 digit system easily. (Run out of numbers)

Long-winded answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
|
I would have done it when there were no visible identifiers at all. I think the current system is acceptable (at least among all the other clusterfucks on bnet2.0).
|
They'll just add letters to the 3 digit ID and then you'll neeed 46000 people.

Logic, eh? What kind of backwards twisted logic is that? If there are too many Spartans, you just 1) can't make another 2) it gets 4 digits. Blizzard won't go about deleting accounts willy-nilly.
Besides everyone knows there can only be 300 Spartans.

is it so much better to have some one named Spartan14521 than Spartan.14521? this way we will at least have a little less 1337naming thingy

IMO it would send a much stronger message if everyone chose the name "Fail".
ESPORTS just sounds lame.
|
hahahah they're giving everyone classic "noob"names ?
now I don't even have to come up with my own variation of sh@dowk1ller3442, bnet will just do it for me.
now they just have to add random colors and titles to the names and it's good.
