All games are now complete. Thanks to Forsti for his coverage, thanks to the players for putting on such a fine display for us, and most importantly of all, thanks to 17173.com for hosting such a great event for us during the beta, I've enjoyed every moment of it.

Replays
As promised the replays from the play-offs onward have been released as the tournament is now complete. You can grab them here: http://download.17173.com/0/12/62725/ (Click the link next to the little green button with downward facing white arrows, then click the link that says 17173电信)

Vods
Vods for the games are usually uploaded quite quickly, available at the following sites:

Forsti has links to the vods of his English coverage here - http://forsti-stream.de/
No English coverage was initially planned but Forsti has invested a lot of time to make sure that it could happen for us, so if you appreciate it I'm sure he'd welcome any donations you care to send his way.

The 17173 vods with Chinese commentary can be found here - http://media.17173.com/sc2/duizhan.shtml

I also try to link them all here in this post for each individual game, with the commentary language used to indicate the link.

Grand Final (Beijing)
+ Show Spoiler +
Some question the appeal of the ZvZ matchup, but what could provide a more compelling finale for this tournament than seeing Europe's top zerg player clash against his Asian counterpart in what should be an epic best of 7 series?

Game 1 on Metalopolis English Chinese

Game 3 on Steppes of War English Chinese
Game 4 on Blistering Sands English1 English2 Chinese
Game 5 on Kulas Ravine English Chinese
Game 6 on Desert Oasis English Chinese
Game 7 on Lost Temple English Chinese
Complete + Show Spoiler +
과일장수 wins 4-3 and takes 1st place in the 17173 World Cup.
과일장수's well-placed spine crawler in game 1 made all the difference as Dimaga had effectively broken through with 4 banelings and some zerglings, but was unable to capitalize on his advantage as they couldn't get anywhere near 과일장수's workers. From there 과일장수 expanded quite quickly and repeatedly outmanoeuvred Dimaga with his speedlings, who would have thought such a strong win was possible with a baneling-free opening?
In game 2 both players opted for the typical speedling/baneling warfare but Dimaga took a fast expansion and managed to gain a ~5 worker lead over 과일장수 who had remained on one base. The extra worker count enabled to him to steadily build up an advantage over time which he used to build a spire much earlier, with 과일장수 GGing once he realised mutas were in play.
Two offensive spine crawlers and a 7 pool give 과일장수 a pretty quick and brutal win in game 3.
Both initially stayed on one base in game 4, opting to build up a reasonably nice economy but they then diverged when 과일장수 opted to go for lair tech, an expansion and a spire while Dimaga stayed tier 1, made a baneling nest and began to seriously flood out large numbers of zerglings. 과일장수 was completely overrun and found himself with 0 workers and only 3 mutas which could do nothing as Dimaga already had 2 queens.
Dimaga's speedlings/banelings were effectively countered in game 5 by 과일장수's roaches so he opted to go for lair tech to grab a spire, with many spine crawlers used to try and ensure he survived long enough. He did hold off the attack but 과일장수 left him with only 5 workers and proceeded to take full advantage by grabbing a gold expansion and establishing a large drone lead. By the time Dimaga was in a position to launch any kind of real counterattack 과일장수 already had his own air army and a 3rd expansion so he just GGed as it would be futile to continue.
Game 6 saw 과일장수 7 pool again, Dimaga had gone for a very late 16 pool in comparison but a disconnect saw the game end before any significant action could take place. The regame was pretty much a repeat of game 2, although Dimaga did lose his expand at one point and 과일장수 was able to hold on slightly longer thanks to well placed spore crawlers.
If you were wondering who the best zerg is in the sc2 beta, game 7 answers that quite nicely for you.

They held a draw on Monday the 17th of May at 16:00 kst to determine the play-off groups, followed by a special 2v2 showmatch between Prime (Maka + Check) and oGs (Spunky + 과일장수) which made for good viewing as all 4 opted to go random, not that you could tell with the standard of play on show!

1. Prime vs oGs on Coalition Chinese
2. Prime vs oGs on Twilight Fortress Chinese
3. Prime vs oGs on Arid Wastes Chinese

An attempt to explain the tie-break system

Three players tied on 2-1, one on 0-3.

All three tied players are given a number from a random number generator, A is the highest, B is the middle and C is the lowest. The first tie-break game is played between B and C.

Assuming B wins game 1, they go on to play A in game 2.
If A > B then A takes 1st and B takes 2nd.
If B > A then B takes 1st and 2nd is given to either A or C depending on who beat who when they met in the main group.

If C wins game 1 then it progresses in exactly the same way, with a loss in game 2 giving them 2nd place and a win giving them 1st place, with 2nd given to A or B depending on their main group result.

One player on 3-0, three tied on 1-2

The tied players are 'seeded' by number in the same way as above but this time they are only fighting for 2nd place, as the other player has already secured 1st.

Game 1 becomes a true knockout this time, so either B or C advances.

The winner of Game 2 between A and (B or C) takes 2nd place.

It's just a big event that the Chinese site plans to run with pretty much the best Chinese and Korean players involved. Some other nationalities may well be taking part also (I hope so at least...). Details are fairly sparse at the moment while they establish what the teams will be, with the Koreans for example this is what I found out and posted in another thread:

...a list of names for the Korean squad was posted up. Freedom, Check, Maka and Cool have all received automatic invites while the remaining spots [I said 4 but I'm not entirely sure how many] will be taken by the winners of a 16 player qualification process, those involved are listed below:

cosmic, hongjinho, isskincom, yongsukchang, gerrard, ssjm, zenio, dayfly, thewind, spunky, hannibal, leeraeun, ssks, anypro, slayersboxer, babybaby

Subs incase people don't turn up: inca, bluemassage, pelias

Names will have changed due to the reset that has happened since I found that info but you can see the competition is going to be of the highest standard.

There are a few articles and pre match write ups I'll see if any are worth translating later tonight.

Wasn't aware of this as I haven't been following the Chinese SC2 scene that closely, if you see Chinese stuff that you want translated feel free to PM me.

I was impressed with that myself since I have a terrible time trying to stream Korean content here in the UK. I only saw the group B matches live and for them I would say games 1, 3 and 6 were most interesting as xiaozhu seemed pretty out of his depth compared to the others.

Just glanced over the 17173 page, I didn't see anything particular interesting. A few couple sentence interviews of the players with nothing that exciting being said :3

Pj and F91 ARE favorites to make it out of their respective groups, but they're both still transitioning from being BW gamers to SC2 gamers, so that's a bit of an issue. But maybe Pj has been practicing Sc2, he got eliminated in the Beijing offline qualifiers for WCG 2010 China (first time since like 2003 ROFL, huge upset :3). It's interesting that Pj chose to switch races from BW.

I'll translateany post-game interviews/articles that may come out \o/

Group A Winner

+ Show Spoiler +

Empty

You kept a low profile before the games, thoughts on winning?
-My 2-1 record today surpassed my expectations. My goal was only 1 win, and I think overall, I got lucky haha.

On Steppes of War [game he lost], you were ahead in the opening too. Do you think you’re lacking in macro and game sense vP?
-I’ve always been kind of bad vP. I was indeed ahead in the beginning, and I wanted to just end it with a wave of attacks, but I didn’t notice the Colossi. When my first attack failed I already knew it was over, I was simply praying for a miracle.

Did you consider Vikings? Right now, it seems like Vikings hard counter Colossi. Or do you think there’s another way to go?
-I considered Vikings, but I was pressed for money, and I decided that if I could only make a couple Vikings, it won’t be enough damage output, so I chose Tanks. At least Tanks have splash. To be honest I’m scared of Colossi, there doesn’t seem to be a good counter…

I saw the Tanks. SC2 Tanks seem to actually be equal to BW in terms of power, and it got a slight buff this last patch. How do you feel about the unit?
-Tanks are pretty good, I just think they’re weak against Immortals and Colossi. But if you use the terrain to your advantage and protect the tanks with your troops, you should be able to minimize losses. I feel like builds involving tanks will increase, and no longer be limited to TvT.

Some people say on Lost Temple, Thor drops TvZ is a good strategy. What do you think?
-The Lost Temple high ground seems kind of imbalanced, so Thor’s are pretty good. But if the Zerg pays more attention, Terran might not get much…like wit me today, tragically…

After you advance, the competition’s going to intensify. Which matchup do you feel most confident in?
-I think I’m only really good vZ. I’m still at a loss vT and vP, so I think I’ll need to practice more.

Thanks for the interview, I hope you can represent China well in the later rounds.
-Thanks.

Group B Winner

Fengzi

Congratulations on advancing.
-Thank you.

Public opinion places PvZ as difficult. Thoughts?
-At first I didn’t think so because I would often lose to a rush from Protoss. But because I’m in touch with Sen, I saw him play well, so I talked with him a bit, and changed my train of thought. I feel like it’s easier now, as long as you can defend all sorts of rushes from P, it’s easier in the late game.

Do you think the new Phoenixes will affect your Mutalisks?
-I think it looks kind of cool, it’s like moonwalking. But they’re slower to mass compared to Mutalisks. Zerg has the best macro, and I don’t necessarily have to make Mutalisks. I’ll see depending on situation.

Infestors got a nerf in the latest patch, how do you feel about Thors ZvT now?
-I think Thors are really good. High HP, and can come out fast, hard to deal with. Especially with a Thor-Marine combo, it’s very strong. My plan is to drag it out and stall, macro, and wait to upgrade Infestors. Against Thors, you really need Infestors. Of course I can also choose Zerglings/Roaches.

Speaking of Thors, we’re reminded of Ultraisks. Everyone thinks Ultralisks suck, how about you?
-Indeed, it sucks. I almost never make it, even with speed it’s still slow. In BW with speed it can catch up to lings. I think Blizzard should buff speed.

Will ZvZ be similar to BW ZvZ?
-It’s still mainly Zerglings and Mutalisks, with the addition of Banelings. The high mobility is a big factor. Of course it depends on the map, on some you can use Roach/Hydralisk.

Apparently you’ve been training for SC2 a lot. Effect on BW?
-You gain something you lose something. I’m much worse at BW now, it’s been a long time. I played a couple days ago, and people I would have no trouble against easily win me now. Depressing…I guess I can only focus on one now…

Thanks, good luck in later stages.
-Thanks.

A side note, this tournament seems to be pretty well organized. Still not sure how the other regions are gonna work, but there's a good possibility of some pretty sweet games \o/

Yea so it seems! Am I right in thinking that China technically shouldn't even have access to the sc2 beta, i.e. it is not yet licensed there or something similar?

I don't think it has been confirmed yet but as TBO said, it seems likely that they will just invite a select group of players. I'm sure when I first read about the event that there was mention of having US and European players involved also but after seeing how lag affected the special Starswar Reborn matches involving DeMusliM, maybe they've gone off the idea and will choose to stay solely with those already playing on the Asian server. *shrug*

Sadly nope, while many of the names really are the people they claim to be, in this case it was another retired pro called Rainbow who took the name for some reason. By now he may well have changed it again since that list came from before the most recent reset.
