While this thread is labeled "DotA2", this is in fact a community thread first. Many of the users in the TL LoL subforum have been playing as friends for over a year now, so it makes logical sense that they would want to play other games together.

Do not compare DotA2 to LoL, you will get banned.

TL LoL veterans know what is expected. Newcomers be warned.

How exactly does the leaver system work? I've had two leaves attributed to me for games where the client has crashed (item getting stuck on the cursor, etc) which in turn crashed my computer, and on restart the Steam client decides to run an update; I'm able to rejoin the game and play it out, but it still gets counted as a leave and I get no battle points; apparently I'm now in the low priority queue for a day. Shouldn't really matter as I'm still working my way through the hero pool in bot games, but it's very frustrating when it's because of a buggy beta client rather than any desire to leave on my part.

you get 5 minutes to reconnect back into the game otherwise you get an abandon on your account. the timer is paused if the game gets paused.

if someone abandons before the 5 minute mark when the game begins the match isnt counted.

Ah, thanks. In normal pub matches, if somebody crashes, does someone generally pause the game to give them a chance to reconnect, or is it every man for themselves? With Steam acting up after a crash, I'd need a much more expensive computer to guarantee being able to get back in within a five-minute window if it's a hard crash/restart.

depends on the server region and players.

whenever i play on na servers, my teammates usually pause the game whereas when i play on sea servers no one usually gives a fuck.

but generally someone pauses the game cause no one wants to play a 4 v 5 game.

Because people always ask "what hero should I start playing?", DNA and I compiled a rough list of heroes in terms of difficulty to play effectively, ranked from 1-5. The list isn't perfect and we're open to suggestions. If I'm not lazy, I'll probably add our reasoning for heroes at some point.

How to read the numbers:
1 - This hero has no outstanding points of difficulty. This is a hero that you can start learning the game with.
2 - This hero requires a stable understanding of the basics of the game. Otherwise, no outstanding points of difficulty.
3 - This hero has quite a few intricacies specific to the hero, and might require some practice to master those aspects. Aside from that, the hero only requires fundamentals to play. Note that a lot of heroes that are traditionally considered "hard" are placed here because their difficulty is almost exclusively based on mechanical difficulty. A hero like Puck is only considered a 3 because while he might be quite technical, his role, item selection, and overall game knowledge requirement are still quite straightforward.
4 - This hero has quite a few hero-specific intricacies, while also demanding a significant amount of general game knowledge/game sense.
5 - This hero is highly technical to play well, while also requiring a very deep understanding of game-flow, their role in the game, and how that role evolves based on your allies and opponents. Generally, heroes here can have quite flexible roles and item selection, and can be quite punishing if those roles/items are played/selected improperly for a given game.

In general, I'd say that a completely new player should play a mix of 1s and 2s (playing only 1s is pretty boring, since most of them are pretty 1-dimensional). A player that can play LoL to a decent level should be comfortable starting on any of the 1s/2s, and very quickly be able to move up to practicing/playing 3s once they're comfortable with the major differences between the games.

that's a really awesome list yango, and from what i remember of those heroes, i agree basically 100%
i would have put syllabear at 3, i think he has some intricacies but isn't overwhelmingly hard. other than that this is a great starting point. made me remember a bunch of the heroes i was good at when i played dota (surprise, they're all the 1s!) and these are the ones i'll come back to i think
i play ... hearthstone =\^.^/= Winterfox

Syllabear is listed as a 5 because in addition to being very technical, he's a very timing-dependent hero. His power growth isn't as smooth as other carries like Antimage, but he has major power spikes around the points of certain item timings that you have to leverage into greater advantages (first Radiance push, first AC push, etc.) and coordinate well with your team. Do you push now, or can you wait 500 gold for your Windrunner's Sheepstick? Can you wait for 1k gold? etc.

He probably could be a 4 I guess.

Reason for QoP being a 5? Her spells seam pretty straight forward and she doesn't require very much mechanical skill. I guess she requires good game sense?

Mechanically she's actually deceptively difficult. She can/should play a lot of situations quite aggressively, but at the same time, she's very squishy (very low base Strength and below-average Strength growth), while also having low range. Sure you have a blink, but the margin of error on using Blink properly is actually ridiculously low (e.g. if you Blink too late to dodge a VS stun, you're very often not going to live long enough to come un-stunned).

She's also very much a versatile hero that's, again, is quite punishing for misplaying her role or making bad item choices.

So low margin of error when trying to make plays. Seems reasonable.

Im also curious as to panda being 3, definitely feels more complex, but overall a great list. Especially since I dont know about the kits of all heroes :D

Panda's 3 because all that's really hard about him is microing Pandas. Playing him otherwise is fairly straightforward.

Just go -wtf mode and practice microing Pandas for like 20 minutes.

How is Storm Spirit a 5?
I definitely see someone as Chen being 5 given the intricacies of jungling/creep microing/abilities, but how does SS even come close to that in complexity? Hell he only has 3.5 active abilities!

I played like 20 Dota 2 games on my friend's account and didn't like it. Just log on to my ancient Steam account to day and realize that I've got Dota 2 for free. Downloading it now and will give another try.

So, with one account you can chose any server to play on?

Yes, when you log in and search a game you pick what server your game will be hosted/played on.

Storm's quite hard to play tbh. If he doesn't do well early on, he's goign to fall behind and will likely never ever catch up. Not only that, but you need good game sense in order to pull off ganks, which storm absolutely needs to do well. Then there's the issue of managing your passive and your mana, which newbies never do properly. Then there's also skill and item builds. Skill builds generally follow a set path, but Storm can and should be flexible with his skill path. Same thing with item builds. You could go for the bloodstone carry path, but that requires a ton of farm and successful ganks. Or you can go for fast sheep, etc... Storm is farm dependent and also dependent on the player being able to make plays. Personally, I think he definitely deserves the 5.

Thanks for that list, Yango.

Been playing a bit of Sand King to try to get a feel for an initiating support in an Alistar/Leona sense, though I'm still having problems figuring out when to use his ultimate pre-Blink Dagger.

Things which catch me out a lot: micro, randomly deselecting my hero, courier management when teammates seemingly divert it every time it tries to make it's way to my lane, and the fact that, unlike LoL, item actives (& TP scrolls) have a mana cost.

Pre-blink a lot of it comes down to waiting/baiting out stuns and then going in for burrow -> epi or e.g. burrowing behind someone so he has to turn first before he could stun you out of ulti which means it will go off.

Besides that you can obviously channel out of vision behind small tree jukespots (tangos are your buddies) and burrow in but I find that to be much harder to pull off since you have to be sure the enemies stick around there long enough.

Oh AND you can abuse highground (stairs e.g.) to channel there when someone is about to walk into your face. Probably the most hilarious way. =P

I don't think TA should be 5, otherwise I mostly agree. TA is pretty specific but is hard only against skilled opponents that know what's your potential. Thou I haven't played against a good TA in ages so I am not sure, she seems very easy to me(10 times easier than, say, chen)
