Host – Not that you guys are childish, but let’s learn about them during those days. Not Girl’s Day members but, the past Bang Minah, Park Sojin, Kim Ahyoung, Woo Jihae, and Lee Hyeri. Let’s learn about you guys, so that’s what prepared, your fans seemed to be very curious.
Sojin – So we reverted back to the Truth Game style.

Host – How were you doing elementary school, so now we will start to find out. So everyone’s elementary school days, Hyeri’s was the closest yes? To graduate from Elementary school?
Hyeri – Five years? Six years?
Sojin – Oh wow.
Jihae – How is it five years (sarcastic tone).
Host – To have graduated.
Sojin – Really it hasn’t been that long…
Hyeri – It’s been 6 years, what what~!
Jihae – Because it’s hasn’t been that long.
Host – And we’re going to talk about Girl’s Day’s elementary school days. And for Sojin-ssi, we can only talk from 4th grade onwards.
Sojin – Oh why why why?
Host – Because from 1st to 3rd grade you went to Gukmin Hakgyo*.
Sojin – Oh how did you know? I went to Gukmin Hakgyo.
Host – Yes 1st to 3rd. And for Jihae-ssi, changed right when she entered 1st grade. Great deal of research.

Host – For me I graduated Gukmin Hakgyo. I was the last generation for Gukmin Hakgyo. *clap clap clap* Why are you clapping so suddenly?

Host – Yes I greatly old. I’m only 30 years old.


[*T/N- Long story short, during the Japanese colonization of S. Korea, they changed lots of culture including the word for Elementary School (So Hak Gyo). After regaining control, the term Gukmin* Hakgyo which means (Hwang Guk Shin Min Hak Gyo – [Can even sacrifice your life for the Japanese King, training subjects for Japan school] was changed to (Cho Deung Hak Gyo – meaning Elementary School)] referring back to the meanings of Cho (Beginner) / Joong (Middle) / and Go (High) for the levels of education.]


Host – Now everyone’s Elementary School days. What’s the first thing that comes to your mind?
Minah – Bbopki*!

[*T/N – Ok this one is going to be a bit longer.
The one Minah mentions is like a Korean bingo style where you can receive a prize by spinning a wheel and throwing a dart on it. You can put prize stuff on top of numbers and the number that hit with the dart you can claim. Or you can trade the Dalgona with snack prizes.

Now the real process of Dalgona (The main prize for the Bbopki game), is a sugar + baking powder mixture cooked over a heat source on a spoon / soup ladle or some kind of model. Before the mixture solidifies when it cools off on a hot surface, there are a number of shape models that were available (animal, ship, airplane, the most popular being the carp form). After the outside edges have been poked off with a sharp tool or knife, with a good shape you can trade these forms for prizes in the Bbopki game.

Minah – Because my last name is Bang, my friends would be like ‘Ya Bang Minah did you fart? Fart fart fart~, (Someone – stink bomb!) captain gas, bboong bboong bboong (Sounds).

Minah – Back then I was healthy so they didn’t smell at all.

Minah – Um. OH YES I DID, I just thought of it. I did something mean to my dad once because I hated my last name. I hated hearing the word ‘bang goo’, I went to dad and said, “I hate being Bang-ssi, I’m going to be Kim-ssi from now on!” then dad got real angry, “YOU, GET OUT” so I started get dressed to go out, and he was like “WITHOUT YOUR CLOTHES”.
Yura – OH ME TOO ME TOO.
Minah – So I hid near in the bicycle racks, only in my underwear when I was in elementary school.
Yura – Me too in the bicycle house.
Host – Why would parents always say get out with clothes off to their children in their elementary school days so much?
Hyeri – Probably to prevent kids going out.
Host – Because they bought the clothes, so take them off?
Sojin – My mom just tells me to go out fully clothed. So they just make me stand outside the main door. I just stand there all day, while crying.

Host – Okay that’s settled, Minah’s nickname was captain gas. Now onto Ahyoung-ssi of Ulsan, what was your nickname?
Yura – I didn’t have wan~
Host – Not ‘um ssuh sseo yo’ (mispronouncing acting cute) but you didn’t have one?
Yura – I really didn’t have one.

Yura – I had one during middle school though.
Host – What was that?
Yura – It was ‘Ilac’, Aiiiilac~

Sojin – Everyone had beautiful nicknames during elementary school.

Sojin – I think those days, nicknames are cute. In those days, you put something with your last name if only one part of the word fits it sticks like that. For me it wasn’t like that. Weirdly in this program the topic of my appearance comes up a lot.
Hyeri – Why why why.
Sojin – I was Bushman.

Sojin – My skin was really dark. I didn’t go outside the house much, but played the longest time on the roof until the sun sets. My face was really, like a native African, it was really dark. It was a complex for me even when I grew up. Eyes are big, mouth is big. All the guys kept calling me Bushman to tease me. I couldn’t even ride the hagwon* car (*private schooling outside public education) because I felt so ashamed.

Host – Yea also for Sojin-ssi because your eyes were big, even when you had darker skin more focus on your eyes, could be…
Sojin – Yes. If you look at black people you can see a lot of their eyes and teeth. Since my face was dark and big, I had that kind of face during those days.
Hyeri – You mentioned there was an episode because of that guy that called you Bushman.
Sojin – Yes, because of that guy the place was a long distance away, I only walked.
Host – So what happened?
Sojin – Because of that teasing was so bad, but soon after I learned it was an expression of interest. So later he bought me a pencil box and said, “it is okay, lets ride the hagwon car together again”.
Hyeri – Aw so cute~ In elementary school, you tease people you like.

Host – Anyway we learned about your nicknames. Let’s revisit some memories during elementary school. First Hyeri-ssi, you wrote down here there were moments where you spoke up to your parents and was punished, what happened exactly?

Hyeri – Yes. Honestly I don’t have many memories of being scolded by my parents when I was young. There aren’t many. But a long time ago, when I was really young, I don’t remember if it happened in kindergarten or elementary school, mother and father were both working. I grabbed my younger sibling’s hand, we lived in like a country-side town, and we crossed a bridge and went to play in the neighboring town. But back then we had no phones, and you had nothing, and since it’s in the countryside after 6 o clock it becomes dark. There were no lights, and we became lost. Then I realized this is a big problem, even bringing my younger sibling with me. Our mother made a huge fit searching for us everywhere, back then I lied to her that my friend lived here.



Hyeri – But I really just came over there for no reason. That moment I was severely punished. And after that I never went out to the neighboring towns.
Jihae – I had a similar instance like this too.
Hyeri – Really?
Jihae – Yeah.
Host – What kind did you have Jihae-ssi.
Jihae – For me, I was the ‘Alley Boss’
Host – Alley Boss Red-haired Ann.
Jihae – Yes that was when I was very young, around kindergarten. Taking all the neighborhood oppas in a group together and we went over to play to a neighboring house.

Jihae – For real. I wanted to crossover once with my strength, so taking the oppas, two of them, so I took them over and crossed it. After crossing it, I was like ‘Wow this is like NEW NEW World’. Being amazed by it, and those two oppas were playing around and they abandoned me. I thought I couldn’t make it back to Korea.
Host – Of course, you need a passport to come from America.
Jihae – So I went to the police station.
Hyeri – It must’ve been hard.
Minah – At such a young age~
Jihae – I only had 500 won on me at the time.
Hyeri – I waited for my mom there as well.
Jihae - Waiting at the police station.
Hyeri – But when you’re young, I only crossed a small bridge. Even passing a railroad crossing that must have been a big thing. An adventure~
Jihae – For me it was America hehe.

Yura – An adventure for me was going over to someone’s house, to a stranger lady’s house I didn’t know, so always on the town speakers it was ‘Kim Ah Young child, we’re looking for Kim Ah Young’s mother, Kim Ah Young child, please pick her up.’
Host – You went over to stranger’s apartments or houses?
Yura – In the street I would be like, ‘Oh hello ahjumma~’ and she would be like ‘it’s you again! Do you want to eat?’ ‘Yes~!’

Hyeri – Ahah, you’re so right. I thought that too while watching the show. She’s like that as well. She’s more familiar with my family, and when we have a big fight, like we’re best friends and we fight the most as well, something like that you know. She’s doing well nowadays too.

Host – Very good. Time to move on to someone struggling with her tailbone while being bored, to Sojin-ssi. Sojin-ssi, in your elementary school days, your happiest moment you wrote was going to the culture museum with your mother.
Sojin – It was the Culture-Arts Museum. There are facilities like that in each region and city; I think I have seen every art piece. She took me during the weekends. At that time I did Seohae(???) as well, not really hoping I would do it, but we’ll have a look and see what happens.

Host – Did you have a big interest towards the arts?
Sojin – Not like having big interests but just it was natural, looking at these pieces, meditating and imagining things came naturally.
Host – Do you have any memorable artists?
Sojin – I don’t remember names.

Sojin – Yes I can think of pictures.
Host – What kinds of pictures did you see?
Sojin – Almost… I saw lots of abstract pieces of arts. If not, something three-dimensional, made physically, I saw lots of pieces. On-the-spot pieces as well ParkJoongHee(?????) things like that, I saw them make stuff as well.
Hyeri – Looking at that, Sojin-unni has a strong understanding[?Audio blarg] of abstract art.
Host – In what ways?
Hyeri – Her great imagination and she’s full of ideas. She overflows with sense, she would guess the original artist’s intentions like ‘Ah so this means that.. I see’.
Host – So she’s probably good at drawing as well then?
Sojin – I’m not that great, for me…

Sojin – I think I’m a unique case hehe.
Host – You said your dream in elementary school as a pianist?
Sojin – When you’re young if you take piano lessons you want to become a pianist. You know, like practicing violin become a violinist; if you’re good at singing become a vocalist. I don’t know why I thought like that, but when I was between 3 and 5 years old was Jeombo(?)

Sojin – There were a lot of episodes, I’ll go with a light one. I think I was unique. Really at home I just drew lots of stuff on A4 paper. I made up characters on the paper, in one piece of paper there are around 30 characters, there were simples ones like round circles with just eyes and nose, but I would ask my dad to… make 50 copies of it for me. I was the class representative of my class. And I would say, ‘I’m only passing this out to the quiet kids’. So I passed them all out. And all the kids wanted a copy so they were quiet!

Host – The beginning of the artist Park Sojin’s personal career.
Hyeri – So impressive.
Minah – My friend was really skillful, and that friend drew well, so that person would draw and sell them! Sell them for 200 won, or for good pictures 500 won, and so-so ones for 100-200 wons. So our school teacher put a stop on his selling.

Yura – For me it was like this, on colored paper I would write ‘Paper folding competition: invitation to our house, requirements: scissors etc.’ I gave out to the students. So 10 students would come, I would say ‘So now we will start~ The best paper folder I will give that person a present’. I opened a competition. I remember them trying their best, I have those memories.
Sojin – I think we’re unique.

Yura – That time a kid younger than me picked up and said, ‘Wah it’s a hobo! A hobo!’ I still remember that. Then that kid’s parents would say, ‘Hello, who’s this?’ back then we didn’t have Caller ID, ‘What is your phone number?’ and you were supposed to say, ‘Not telling~’ but I was stupid and said, ‘936….’ Then I told them our number! So they called back to my parents and I was scolded a lot. ‘DDAEK[SFX of hitting] YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO ASK YOUR PARENTS IF YOU WANTED 500WON’.

Minah – Yes I had once.

Yura – Not like real fighting, but you know, cutting up someone’s eraser’s, throwing stuff around, when I’m sitting down, someone would hit me in the back and I ask, ‘why did you hit me’. Responding, ‘you said you wanted to be hit’, and saying ‘what when?’, ‘look it says here, please hit me once right there.’ And then in the written on a post, ‘Please hit me once’. So later I would get my revenge. I would cut down my eraser very small, make it look like dandruff on their heads, did those kinds of pranks.
Host – That’s right, you get lots of stress from that.
Minah – It’s fun at first, but when it stacks up… the guy would get so angry and then would punch you. Then end up crying ‘Uhh~’.
Sojin – Thinking about it I fought with a guy once. This guy liked me a lot, we used our fists. Really we fought like that. That time I was tall, around Minah’s height.
Minah – Why, why me??
Sojin – Then he was slightly shorter.
Yura – Aha, in elementary school.
Sojin – My height right now is same back in elementary school. So I’m tall and the guy is smaller. I’m winning; ‘OH SSI* YOU MESSING WITH ME?’ and that made him mad, so I fought a guy once. I never fought with girls before, but I did fight with a guy once.

Minah – Of course. With my older sister, we want to eat some algona, we had the ingredients we tried making it but the ladle burned. That day we got grounded, I promised my friends I would meet them at the playground, but… hehehe.

Minah – I remember being stuck in the veranda watching my friends play from afar.

Sojin – When you’re young, that’s a big deal.
Minah – It was a corridor access veranda, there was a small hole like this. In between that I would put my head through and, ‘YA HAVING FUN?’ You can go down any minute from the 6th floor, I was so scared from my mom saying I was grounded; I couldn’t go beyond the corridor.

Host – There was another… ‘English Hakwon Water Incident’.

Minah – Because I hated going to English Hakwon, I would say to the English teacher, ‘Teacher, I’m sick!’ so I didn’t go. Saying I was sick with chicken pox, when the Korean teacher picked up, saying.. ‘teacher I have chicken pox all over my body, I have mosquito like stuff I said I couldn’t go. I made Kimchi fried rice for myself having fun watching some cartoons. Then mother using her foresight sense, she called the neighbor ahjumma to check. Then she was checking my neck, but there was no mark on my neck for chicken pox, so she was made an excuse for me saying ‘Oh Minah got allergy from our house dog, and very ticklish right now’ there was an incident like that. That time mom gave me a blind eye once.

Sojin – When did you learn about chicken pox?
Minah – When I was in kindergarten I was sick with chicken pox once, it was a real big sickness for me, so after that I only knew chicken pox.
