Is it absolutely necessary to post a persons personal information? Especially when we've only seen possibly the tip of an iceberg? It's like, everyone wants to immediately take matters into their own hands and enact their own brand of justice in the form of an uninformed, incomplete judgement call. It's a big deal. | ||

I've seen similar things from one Uncle to a cousin in upstate NY next to Canada in a rural town. Cousin was beaten much worse for a similarly stupid reason. It isn't religious either. There are too many factors to limit it based on anything, though I do believe in psychology they believe that it is an ineffectual act, though it is a learned behavior. Meaning that even though beating your child won't change their opinion on what they did, you will most likely do it because your parents did it to you. | ||

This is completely different than spanking though. His body language shows that he's physically trying to beat her and cause injury. It's kind of disgusting... I don't have kids but I know that I could never do something like this to them if I did have them. | ||

I really hope the fucker gets thrown in prison and raped repeatedly day in and day out. But sad truth is nothing will happen. He won't get charged, sent to prison, or anything severe. The most that will probably happen is he'll be forced to resign and will end up living on a cushy pension because he's a fucking judge. And apparently jury and executioner. | ||

As I aged, my parents started to reason with me. I learned a lot more from long, lengthy, and loud arguments that would often end with a lot of crying and hugging from all parties involved. Parents don't always know best, and a two way dialogue can help both sides understand an issue. I know from experience that if a child and parent keep at it long enough, they can almost always come to some understanding. But on the point of corporal punishment as a method of teaching children... I can't stress this enough: Beatings do nothing but instill fear of physical punishment. They do not teach lessons. This fear of punishment says nothing about the nature of the action a parent deems wrong. Ultimately what ends up happening is that the child refrains from action simply because he/she can't "get away with it." The lesson is only learned, if at all, gradually. As the child abstains from the action from fear of being assaulted, he/she eventually learns in some other way why the action was wrong. So no, it doesn't teach. Now, you might argue that, while it doesn't teach, corporal punishment deters objectionable behavior. To which I simple say: There are better ways to get someone to stop doing something than holding physical punishment over their head. In the case of this video, the teenager was illegally downloading video games. The parents felt that this was wrong, and, perhaps after a few instances of telling her not to do so and her continued disobedience, the issue escalated to this confrontation. Was beating the best solution? Isn't the most obvious solution here to take her internet away and supervise her time on the computer? Maybe move the computer into a common area? Is physically flogging someone the best way to correct their behavior? When is it ever the best way? I'm at a loss for an answer to that last question. Here, the parents were simply fed up with the teen and resorted to a cheap out to correct the behavior. It's lazy. To top it off, it likely didn't change the teen's stance on software piracy. In terms of teaching a lesson they felt was important, the parents likely failed their daughter. I'm willing to bet she still pirates software. In sum, those of you who hold up corporal punishment as a great way to teach your kids or correct behavior are not thinking this through enough. I haven't seen a reasonable argument beyond the whole "well it worked for me" bullshit. Teach children, don't beat children. The two are not one in the same. | ||

Edit to go on about HP's post above: What beating actually accomplishes is the following thought process... "Why are you doing xy?" "To avoid punishment." A friend of mine was pushed into playing the piano and singing by her parents very, very hard (check the other youtube videos of the girl in the OP, I smell something similar). However, since she never wanted to do it in the first place the mentality that sunk in with the years was "I'm doing something I don't like just to avoid punishment." - the instant she left her home she quit both. Fear and guilt are instruments used by governments, that's worse enough. Keep them out of raising kids please, ffs. | ||

The law specifically excludes “reasonable” discipline by the child’s parent, guardian, or conservator; corporal punishment is not in itself abusive under the law. An act or omission is abusive only if “observable and material impairment” occurs as a result, or if it causes “substantial harm,” or exposes the child to risk of substantial harm. Doesn't seem to me like it caused substantial harm or material impairment. YES it is hard to watch and pretty cruel, but parents have the discretion to discipline their children as they see fit. Also it's just a belt, not a bat. It's not like he's going to kill her or break all the bones in her body. It's superficial harm. He doesn't deserve to get thrown in jail, disbarred, or any other punishment because he has done nothing illegal based on the video alone. Stop freaking out everyone. | ||
