Criticism is allowed. Undue flaming is not. Take a second to think your post through before you submit.

Bans will be handed out.

Should go without saying, but don't link restreams here either.

This is seeding for the main events which has 76,000$ in prizepool...also flying players around the world and paying for there hotels is slave treatment? What world do you live in?

So were paying 20 dollar to watch a qualifier for the main event? rofl.
Tell me with how much income the average player leaves this event? Not much? who cares about travelling and hotel, when you earn less than the min. income.

The event gives you a better chance at winning 26k for the main event. The players will gladly grab any advantage they can get.

Please stop talking about the main event. We are paying 20 dollars (if we wanna watch it) for this arena. dont come with prizemoney from other tourneys.

MLG says they wanna make profit. and they charge us 20 dollars for this event. If i pay 20 dollars i want a huge chunk of it to go to the main characters which are the players (NO, not the casters, ffs..).
And watching the prize money, its just ridiculous, ans they surely wont get my 20 dollars if they want profit for themselves, but dont give ANY of it to the players.

you actually think MLG is making a profit out of this? rofl

You win the thread. MLG may have been the best tournament in 2011, but it wasn't the only one and will never be. They now choose to disappoint, that's their decision.

Lol it's a ridiculously ugly state of affairs when people feel SUCH a sense of entitlement to something which takes huge effort, and tons of money to put on, that they get actually angry and feel aggrieved when then have to pay for it!

Everyone complaining in this thread should be ashamed of yourselves- organisations need money to survive. Why shouldn't you, the consumer, give them some? I agree, they should offer low-quality with ads, but at the end of the day paying $20 isn't going to kill you, and if everyone did it then there would certainly be many more events to come.

This argument can be said about anything. Paying $50 wouldn't kill me either but it still not worth it.

As a comparison i can stream five HD quality movies for those $20, that's about 8-10 hours of higher quality entertainment. I can also buy a months subscription to live streams for all Premier League matches, Champions league, NHL, and the top movie channels. All higher quality than this 3 day MLG qualifier.

3 days of inferior SC2 (compared to GSL) or a months worth of all top sports, top movies, and all the latest TV series/shows. Really shows how off they are in their pricing.

This. It's not that $20 is some life changing amount of money, it's that what they are offering is not worth it compared to other offerings out there, both SC2 related and not. ESPECIALLY when the event has no crowd, not having that hype makes the value even less.

Plus God knows who is casting it.

^ Pretty much. If MLG priced it's ticket at a competitive price I'd be more inclined to buy it. 3 days of MLG just isn't worth $20 when compared to GSL's 2 month $15 ticket to me. You don't have to be a stupid customer to support the things you enjoy and it's sad that anyone can champion charging more for less in the name of growing esports. I love MLG, and I quite enjoy watching it but this is just a bad deal compared to the other Starcraft you can spend that $20 on.

$20 is a bit too much if you ask me. For $15, I'll think about, depending on the player list, for $10 I'll probably buy it. Not to mention the time it starts isn't very comfortable for us Europeans, so paying to watch it live isn't all that exciting.

I understand that MLG wants to promote e-sports and make it bigger and better for everyone, but I don't think charging the viewer so much is the right approach. If something is good, in this case e-sports, it will get popular. Injecting money artificially and offering ridiculous prize money will just create a huge bubble without actually promoting e-sports all that much.

My advice, take it slowly MLG and eventually e-sports might become what we all want it to be. If it doesn't work, then it wasn't meant to be. Good luck.

Arguable. Assembly may be the same quality video wise, perhaps, but player and production wise is definitely arguable.

$20 dollars may not be worth it to you, but so long as MLG isn't profiteering, then $20 is the price. It costs money to fly the best players from around the world and put them in the same room and if you buy Sundance's argument that this is the reason for the $20 PPV, then any similar event (whichever company puts it on), will be similarly priced.

MLG doesn't need Starcraft, They can get League of Legends, which has more viewers.

Boy, if you think MLG will have a hard time getting SC2 viewers to go for PPV, how do you think that would go over in LoL?

Chances are they won't have too, because Riot keeps putting up the prize money (5 million).

i cant pay 20$ for one weekend, that is a lot of money for me.
im from europe and i dont wanna stay up all night to watch all games. lower price + free low quality+add stream would have been WAY better.
sadly enough i cant see my favorites play that weekend, and i was looking forward to it

i think the lack of a free stream (do as many adds as u wish o_O) hurts the esports and the players

Best post of the thread to be honest.

Sundance is trying to make a quick buck off the Sc2 community it seems.

2 Ignorant posts in a row? . Both starcraft and mlg needs each other , they are part and parcel of the "advancement" of starcraft as an esport in the west. I couldn't even START to imagine what it would be like if there wasn't an MLG w/starcraft last year.

Personally I feel GSL is a tad bit stale and boring although it provides high level games . MLG really gives me those chills that I get when I hear the crowd screaming at the top of their lungs or when there are rivalries going on carried on from the previous MLG. I'm sorry but Assembly and DH doesn't provide that kind of excitement value for me , it feels like the tournament is just a bunch of pro-gamers thrown inside and asked to play each other till the end. / off topic

So about the PPV , I feel that the pricing is too damn high!. $20 for a weekend of content? Furthermore , I was looking through the entire announcement , there wasn't any mention of who is going to cast the games. From what I get , there will be a Main stream and a couple of "beta" streams , that's it. I wouldn't want to pay $20 and find out JP and Husky is casting. I feel day9 is a "must" for all MLGs , something felt amiss during the last MLG when day9 wasn't there.

MLG, why would you guys do this -_-

Well, Assembly has got one more viewer here. If it wasn't something ridiculous ($20, really? That's more than GOM charges for one month of GSL and the players there are the highest class and that covers like all of their shows which is like 10x the amount of content you guys are offering with this), I might have paid, but I don't see me dropping $20 to watch a few players that I like, and then have a lot of filler games.

Sorry, I'd rather watch a ton of ads on the free stream and watch my favorite players than to pay $20 for "non-stop action" if I don't give a shit about two random open bracket players.

Sorry MLG, but I don't feel like this was the right moment to do this move, and especially at such a high price.

I doubt it will actually be $20 in the end for the majority of people.

I suspect it's simply a market tricking. Release the information that your going to make it PPV at a high price mark, let it sink in to the community, come back before the event appearing to be reasonable and listening to the community, cutting prices, offering promotional deals, discounted rates for gold members, etc.

To put it bluntly, many more people will think there getting a great deal if they can pick up a $20 dollar pass reduced to say $10, than if it was simply announced at $10 to begin with.

if you want to support esports,do not buy it.

edit:a tournament supporting esport is making money through adds on free streams, lots of viewers attracting sponsors, bringing money into the scene, not the opposite.
i sincerely hope assembly will rape mlgs numbers

Woop Wooop! I am so excited, this is GREAT news.

I will just elaborate on how I watched MLG all the time. The MLG Timing is horribad for Europe. As a working member of society I am not able to stay up on a sunday night till 4am and/or later.
So for the last MLGs I watched, I had to leave the stream at the quarter- or semifinals.

This said, I am not mad at that, I am a spoiled sc2 kid. I wath high quality streams, and I prefere the player vision over the caster vision. So watching tournaments almost only is "research" for the drama that will be talked about during the next month.

The only tournament, I really like and I really enjoy watching, - because even in downtime I have nice music in the background instead of 30minute commercial breaks that repeat themselves after 5 minutes, because the audience is part of the tournament and not only an asset, because the atmosphere is the atmosphere of an old lan tournament, and not the atmosphere of a superbawl championchip, - is assembly.

So when MLG was on the same Weekend like assembly I was worried.
I was...

Assembly it is guys. Don't rage at MLG, pay or switch stream...

Hmmm I'm not sure yet. At the end of the day this is pretty much the same amount of content code s by itself would (obviously with a lower quality in games as it's only like 12 koreans) be on one weekend for the price of code s and code a.
I wish I'd be like 10/5 bucks for gold members though, I don't really care about assembly given what players will attend what tournament, and I love MLG since like 06 and they have always delivered great content. It's still two weeks so I have a lot of time to think about it I guess.

Also in fact MLG is creating profit, before sundance became CEO they were in the reds but from what I know ever since he became CEO they are making money, and honestly PPV is pretty much the only way sc2 will not collapse down to a few tourneys in a few years. Again I just wish they'd give a discount to gold members, because pretty much every european would only buy gold for tournament hq and vods...

Name me another sport that charges PPV for an event with NO LIVE CROWD. Please try, you won't find one easily, the energy of the crowd definitely contributes to the experience.

I was planning to watch like 1/3 of the games since I'm busy so $20 is sadly a big no-no for me especially when the VODs are free the next week. I think I'll stick to watching the 4 main events since they provide a free stream and is included in the Gold package.

Conveniently enough, Assembly is taking place at the same time.

The argument is not that simple. The factor that matters is total revenue: price times number of purchases. If at least twice as many people buy a $10 pass than the $20 pass, then the $10 pass is simply a better idea. And the lower the price is, the more people you can expect to buy it. The question is at which price is revenue maximized. I'd be surprised if that's at $20.

I agree with another post a bit above me, that we'll probably see the price lowered soon as a marketing trick.
